The cartoons don't matter as much as you may think what Pops and Ma dukes teaching them everyday matters. How Parents interact with each other on a daily basis matters. Do u all yell, cuss, fuss? Do u belittle each other? Im not saying u do just examples.
That interaction teaches a Son or Daughter what to look for in a partner how to interact later on.

I don't see why he would have the character at the table at all if the point was to support segregation.
Charles Shultz spoke up about being attacked by racists in the 60's when he added Franklin. He added him to the strip (and later) to the cartoon to combat segregation. He thought it was important that black children saw themselves in popular media.
