Denise Young Smith is Silicon Valley’s most powerful black woman. “My name was not talked about prior to maybe 5 years ago,” she says. But that quickly changed once Apple named her as their very first vice president of diversity and inclusion, just a few months ago.

Young Smith was talking in a panel discussion on fighting racial injustice, which Quartz moderated, at the One Young World Summit in Bogotá, Colombia. She was also keen to point out that while her job at Apple was new, “I’ve been black and a woman for a long time. I have been doing this work [and] I have been playing this role for a very long time.”

As part of her new role, Smith will have a direct line to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. Young Smith, a 20-year veteran at Apple, will lead a team responsible for improving Apple’s diversity figures and ensuring the company’s hiring practices and retention is open and inclusive.

Apple, like many other tech titans such as Google, and Microsoft, is trying to take key steps in addressing the problem of having a lack of diversity, which has been highlighted by investors. But it does look like the company is making progress. Apple’s latest statistics show that a majority of new hires in the US are from ethnic minorities, although white employees still account for 56% of the overall current workforce.

When asked whether she would be focusing on any group of people, such as black women, in her efforts to create a more inclusive and diverse Apple, Young Smith says, “I focus on everyone.” She added: “Diversity is the human experience. I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT.” Her answer was met with a round of applause at the session.

Young Smith went on to add that “there can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blonde men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation.” The issue, Young Smith explains, “is representation and mix.” She is keen to work to bring all voices into the room that “can contribute to the outcome of any situation.”

Young Smith wants to also focus on “allies and alliances,” and called on “those who have platforms or those who have the benefit of greater representation to tell the stories of those who do not.” She said when that’s accomplished, it’s a “win for everyone.”

In response to Young Smith’s comments, another panelist, prominent Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, stressed the importance of acknowledging “white privilege” when discussing diversity and representation.

“White people say to me all the time like ‘DeRay, I worked really hard for this, I worked hard.’ You didn’t work hard for every band aid to look like you, for every baby doll to look like you, for the world to treat you as human, and everything as ‘other’ is not the result of your personal hard work—that’s what white privilege is.”

Innovating!!

In this article, alone, she has already proven herself ineffective to the community concerning diversity being pulled from our communities to be employed there.

That blonde haired, blue eyed, white girl, "tow the company line" attempt to rebrand white privilege as diversity, made me laugh out LOUD!

Diversity is a dog whistle in corporate america. That should be evident by now.

Put no stock in this word or multiculturalism curriculum.

Pay attention: everything labeled for inclusion excludes the people that have always been intended to be excluded. It's conversation and that is all it ever will be.

It is either an Afrocentric focused program, which is not corporate america's responsibility, or not.

People of color, in this vein, are not even our concern. African descendend ONLY!

They are picking everyone but the american born Black male, unless he is second generation from a country in Africa, and Black women are not too far behind in this same respect.

I respect what she is under the impression she has accomplished in her personal career in corporate america, and for that, she should be applauded.

Still an agent of white insecurity, for white insecurity.

Strategize to build our own or STFU and GTFO!

We would take those classes every fucking year working for the feds, then they do the opposite.
Hired this white guy who was unqualified and he fucked it up by sexual harrassing a coworker.

She just a mouthpiece.
She has no power to change anything.

Do our folk really deserve folk to make real change? When our folk were given that brehs either talk down when they were lived amd later on lied in their elder age and their Grand Kids just shitted on the leaders see Dr. King and Malcolm, Thurgood Marshall etc.

This is problematic.
But she'll get paid, Apple gets a token spokesperson, and the heat will be off for a few moments.
She'll write a book, crowing how she moved the largest tech company into the "light"".
She'll move on, then become the darling of the right wing talking circuit.

But I bet all the black apple product owners will break their necks to get that next new product when it comes out. I'll put money on it.

What a goofy post. Is there an official “black” phone/software company out there?
What's goofy is breaking your neck to spend your money with folks that tell you upfront that you ain't got to worry about you or anyone like you making a dime of dollars you spend with them because they ain't hiring. But hey..do you. I understand that phones are social status items and if it ain't Apple then your broke...just like that phone screen.

It's all just for show. :smh: Apple and the other tech companies have no fucks to give about any of this. They built some of the most valuable companies in the world and will continue doing business as usual. What incentive do they have to change?

Deep down, they probably think they have all the diversity they need with the crazy number of Asians working for those companies. If they do hire black people, watch them use the H-1B program to overlook black people here for overseas help. A win/win for them. They ain't slick. :smh:

Clown show. Like I said, Asians are the diversity. They the smallest demo of minorities in this country but the most represented in tech. Now the black woman for diversity is being replaced by a white woman. Surprised it isn't an Asian, but that will be next once people complain. And since Asians are 'POC', replacing the white woman with an Asian would be all about diversity. :hmm: They playing chess.

Apple VP of diversity and inclusion Denise Young Smith is leaving

Apple's first-ever vice president of diversity and inclusion, Denise Young Smith, is leaving Apple at the end of this year, TechCrunch has learned. Smith, who has only been in the position since May of this year, previously served as Apple's head of worldwide human resources for three years.

Taking over as VP of inclusion and diversity will be Christie Smith, who spent 17 years as a principal at Deloitte. In her career, Smith has focused on talent management, organizational design, inclusion, diversity and people solutions. At Apple, she'll report to Apple VP for People Deidre O'Brien, the company announced internally today.

"We deeply believe that diversity drives innovation," an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch. "We’re thrilled to welcome an accomplished leader like Christie Smith to help us continue the progress we’ve made toward a more diverse workplace."

Smith had been talking with Apple CEO Tim Cook about the next phase of her career and life since about a year ago, according to a source. Over the last few months, Apple has been searching for a successor to replace Smith. It's not quite clear, however, when exactly Smith decided she would leave Apple. But it was definitely before she made those comments in Bogotá, Colombia that she later apologized for.

Smith's planned departure from Apple comes shortly after Cornell Tech announced Smith would become an executive in residence starting this January. At Cornell Tech, Smith will work with students to "build an early career-stage awareness of inclusive leadership and diverse talent," according to Cornell's blog.

Earlier this month, Apple released its first and last diversity report under Smith's leadership. As of July 2017, Apple is 32 percent female worldwide. Nationwide, Apple is 54 percent white (down two percentage points from last year), 13 percent Hispanic (up one percentage point), nine percent black (no change), 21 percent Asian (up two percentage points), three percent multiracial (up one percentage point) and one percent other (no change).

At the leadership level, Apple is still predominantly run by men, who make up 71 percent of the leaders at the company worldwide. White people, meanwhile make up 66 percent of the leaders at Apple in the U.S. Meanwhile, only 3 percent of Apple’s leaders in the U.S. are are black, so Smith's departure won't do anything to help the amount of black representation at the top.

No the issue is not people of color, it's blacks. I could give a fat rats ass about people of color. Stop with this language of supporting others that don't support your black ass when they get on or allows racists to avoid doing anything for your black ass and receive government subsidies to do so.

She has to do that. Its Silicon Valley not 125th and Lennox.
LOL.....
Hell, I just left NYC on Wednesday and saw more CaCs on 125th and Lennox then black folks. I went to a spot called Red Rooster, but I get what you were saying.....

Peace,

It’s hard for me to believe that black people are still stupid enough to even use that term. The idea that there is a POC community is absurd. While every other group fights to protect itself, we’re fighting for everyone else’s rights and wondering why we can’t get ahead.

Peace,

Exactly. And then we wonder why we see dot heads and Asians in Silicon Valley not fighting to bring in more black people but we are dumb enough to keep thinking they are on our team.
