Kaepernick is GQ's citizen of the year and cover story

You are still misguided and making no sense.
Wanna discuss what I actually said or just wanna make remarks with no backup? I understand you dont like when someone makes you actually have to think about what you follow.

Wasn't Ali seen as a hero MUCH later?

The difference here is we live in the social media era living through a virtual struggle and you can PRETEND to stand up to oppression and actually bank off of it. The civil rights struggle became the civil rights industry. This is exhibit A.
And the white lefties will gladly help you pretend so that you can feel good about it and not actually do any of the things you can actually control.

What you actual said makes no sense, though. What you said is just a jumble of right-wing talking points tied together with words like "civil rights industry" and "white lefties." That's all.

So your argument is that it doesn't make sense because you don't like what it SOUNDS LIKE?

You use the words "right wing talking points"
But I'm not gonna dismiss what you say just because it's a phrase that's been used before.

Funny how some terms are ok with you and not others.

Again, more misguided babble.

you're the one who quoted me as if you were about to drop some truth bomb. It's cool. Sometimes we agree. Sometimes we don't.
...but you quoted me first

Yeah and we wrapped that discussion up already. I remember that part.

Then you came and quoted me when I was no longer talking to you as if you had something to say. All I got out of it was "you're wrong because I don't like the words youre using. "

Cmon World lol. Dont reach. You know that. You looked through that whole discussion and saw the same thing I saw.

All I ask is if you decide to engage, say something.

I posted information to increase your information, see the YouTube videos. I can see you did not even watch them. I only posted them, because I could see the wide holes in your information.

I saw Those. I didn't bother debating them because they were just saying what you were already saying with no added evidence. I left it alone. And they are irrelevant to what I just said that you just replied to. If I wanted to debate the content of those videos I wouldve. All they prove is that those guys believe what you believe. I wouldn't debate that. It's obvious.

If anything, you posting a guy who makes a living off of what he does proves what I just said about a civil rights industry. And he comes from.the civil rights era where it began.

I disagree with that guy like I disagree with you. He didn't say anything that exposed any of these "wide holes" you keep mentioning but never actually pointing out. The fact that you wanna hide behind the words of another man, whos literally only showing me where you got the idea that I disagree with. Shrug.

Cacs pissed too! White dude on Facebook posting some shit like they awarding Kaep with something but not our military. My response to that was the military forever didn't honor African Americans and what they did in the military, specifically the Harlem Hell fighters. Talk about being disrespectful! They pick and choose what's respectful. Fuck them!

But the military has honored the Harlem hellfighters and many other Blacks in the military. What are you talking about?

Bruce Jenner got woman of the year last year from the same sort of media machine, so why not? Y'all love getting validation from them. Apparently Kaepernick does too. What kind of shoot went down with that? High end, big name photographer takes Kaepernick out to Harlem and buys the finest gear for him to pretend to be 1960s black panther LEADER, Huey Newton while playing with kids hes never met before in a gentrified place he doesn't live :roflmao:

I can just see them high end hair stylists spraying his finely manicured afro with hair spray so it doesn't move, while them kids are in the back. "Dont feed em yet! They gotta look hungry!"

Damn. Why'd you have to bring up the Jenner shit? That woman of the year shit was ridiculous.

Nah they really don't. The blackness theyre obsessed with is normally street gangster rap bullshit. The only Black civil rights figure they know is MLK. A FEW may know Malcolm X, and even fewer know who the hell the black panthers were, much less the guy who lead them. I'd bet long money that if you surveyed white people , 1 in 10 would know.

I have to disagree with you. White people are keenly aware of the black panthers and the imagery associated with them. Fox News has been using them as the black boogey man to frighten voters and scare up votes since Obama wasn't scary enough. Do you not recall the reaction to Beyonce and her super bowl performance by conservative sites and the police? They wanted to boycott doing security at her concerts.

Now if you want to argue they don't know the TRUE HISTORY of the black panthers, that is a valid argument, but after PBS did their black panther documentary and it trended on social media, that may not always be the case either.

The rest of this is a general response to some of the complaints I've seen in here, not directed at any one poster since I read the thread before I responded and didn't pay attention to who said what.

I have not read the article yet, so I can't comment on the substance of what they wrote. I'm assuming it was decent as Kaep posed for the pics, said he referred sources for the magazine to speak with, and tweeted the story himself.

I don't think that GQ is billed as a primary black magazine or of the mindset they would gain black subscribers long term for throwing us a bone by pandering to black people. Even if they are, choosing not to fall for it is one thing, but bad mouthing it is quite another thing. All the Kaep threads I've seen are complaining about the white establishment not taking the protests seriously, twisting it, etc. We get a white publication that is going to do a story and they are getting hate over it from both sides. If they are pandering or just being socially responsible, why should they continue to champion black causes if we aren't even going to support those on the side of Kaep? I'm not speaking of spending money, don't buy the magazine if you feel it is not being published in good faith, but why tamp down the effort to get exposure to Kaep's story?

GQ is one of those magazines that is in every hospital, doctors office, dentists office, auto mechanic shop and waiting rooms all over the country where people have nothing else to do but sit and read if they aren't on their phones. People who don't care about sports, or haven't had time to follow the story, or are only getting sound bites and Trumps tweets will have an opportunity to read and learn something.

Trumps tweets and the hot takes are trying to paint Kaep as anti-American, anti-flag, anti-military etc. In most stories about anything where there is a disagreement between black culture/people and the status quo, black people are painted as "other". Even though we are born with and entitled to the same rights and liberties as white folks, we are always discussed as a people trying to infringe on society or take rights and liberties we haven't earned, or didn't deserve or some other nonsense. GQ however has named Kaep CITIZEN of the year. Inclusive. An American. An American CITIZEN. Wondering why he would be named CITIZEN of the year when they have been hearing what a horrible person he and his movement are, might make them read the article. Even if people don't read the article, for people who get their news by skimming headlines, that headline by a respectable magazine is enough to sometimes make people more open to hearing his side or set/change perceptions. It validates Kaep as an American. One of America's OWN citizens. The language of inclusiveness is important. Don't underestimate it. It's part of the reason so many white racists are pissed.

You make some decent points. Ill raise it up to 3 out of 10 lol.

I remember when Mos Def was on Bill Maher and he mentioned Assata Shakur. NOBODY in the room had ever even heard of her, including Uber liberal, so called down with Black people , loves to fuck Black strippers , Bill Maher.

I've mentioned Panthers to white people and if they know them at all, they tend to think like Tomi Lahren, even if they're the "cool White people". Shit, I had white cl workers who don't even know the AUC is on the west side of town in Atlanta.

Lol these mags can't be taken seriously about what they choose to honor. They do tend to run with the wind, which has to.make ya wonder about this narrative some are claiming. GQ aint in the business.of doing something "unpopular" . They do what they think will sell. Why do they think THIS will sell whole some think it's so revolutionary?

It might not even be about Kaep. They might be anti-Trump and not give a damn about Kaep. I think it still has net benefit though.

I dont even know what that means or how that's relevant to anything good for Black people.GQ can leave us out of their bullshit

It's beneficial for the reasons I stated in my longer post. Even if their motive is to get a counter narrative to what Trump has been spewing or something self serving, and not because they believe in Kaep or his fight against police brutality, the inclusiveness and other benefits still accrue. People will still see the headline. If they read it, it gets his story out. They will still see him (which translates to black folks by proxy) represented as a citizen and not something or someone with no rights or standing. It will still spark discussion.

Yeah I read all that. I disagree. That sounds nice and flowery, but nah.

I'm a huge Kaep supporter. Haven't watched a snap of the nfl this year. But that Bruce 'woman of the year' shit just had me like.

Because I remember thinking when that Bruce went down, 'agenda.' So as
@Camille said, maybe this is more anti-Trump than about Kaep's message.

Well y'all can run with that one then lol

But here's another question I had earlier.

WHO was citizen of the year last year? Year before?
