They were search and interrogated for hours so this means the authorities lack sufficient evidence on any one person.

China has a completely different legal system. It is a socialist based system. If was arrested in Honk Kong then maybe because Hong Kong follows British common law.
China has the strictest shoplifting penalites in the world. And they have a history of not showing slack to American citizens for crimes committed over there.

I decided to do a little research on Chinese criminal law.
Theft of property...
Those who steal relatively large amounts of public or private property and money or have committed several thefts are to be sentenced to three years or fewer in prison or put under criminal detention or surveillance, in addition to fines; or are to be fined.
Those stealing large amounts of property and money or involving in other serious cases are to be sentenced to three to 10 years in prison, in addition to fines.
Those stealing extraordinarily large amounts of property and money or involving in especially serious cases are to be sentenced to 10 years or more in prison or given life sentences, in addition to fines or confiscation of property. Those falling in one or more of the following cases are to be given life sentence or sentenced to death, in addition to confiscation of property:

Like what the fuck is considered a "Relatively large amount of property".... and because this is a socialistic regime.. notice how they list amounts of "public or private" property.
Liangelo's problem is that... since he is a foreigner they can't give him probation. There is no way to Supervise it. Also since China is a Socialist country... they probably wouldn't just take restitution and allow him to dismiss the case.

I also wanted to look at some examples of other americans arrested in China for comparisons. Granted... All of these people are going to be WHITE.
This dude was held 5 weeks for injuring a cabdriver that had roughed up his mom on a fare dispute. The US had to intervene.

They gonna wait until January... to see what his grades are like... and hope that he would actually STILL WANT to pledge their 'house' in the middle of the season, or just before March Madness... Knowing that he could leave campus at any moment, if he declares himself 'eligible' for the draft & hires an Agent.
