I was too young at the time to really remember this moment but I remember a lot of people were calling him a sell-out for doing this.

The comments are polarised in the YouTube comments.

Your thoughts?

I think the bigger question about Rhames is what the fuck was he doing accepting this role?!?

Y'all need to learn what cooning is. Anything but Sheriff Clarke does is cooning, what Ving Rhames did was respect for an actor whom he respected. It wasn't cooning, it wasn't even close. People who you respected and looked up to, regardless of whether they physically impacted your career they gave you inspiration and their inspiration is why are you are here. Respect, not cooning

I can't call him a coon for that....when it comes to sports or entertainment or art...people are in a different state of mind. He respected his artistry. They both got a award at the end of the day and Rhames is still the official winner.

Right. It's too many real coons out here for me to put him in that category over that.

I always thought he did

He gave his award to a dude he never met

This is the same dude who did that shit in Pulp Fiction, so I didn't have huge respect for him anyway

That word has lost all meaning on this board

So I guess what Beyonce' did to Taylor Swift is also cooning then right?
Yall niggaz learn a new word and wanna abuse that shit.
Like my man said above,
He was giving props to someone who did it before him

He did it to ingratiate himself and got more roles. Shit was uncalled for and didn't need to be done. Shit was scripted as fuck. He needed to show is chops

"Cooning"... o_O
Dudes really have NO CLUE as to what that means these days.:smh:

If brother Rhames had given his award to Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Lena Horne or Brock Peters would you still be asking this question...?
Ving Rhames simply gave his award to an actor he admired who had a far more substantial career than he had (at that time).
Why read more into it or assign it a negative banner when it all he had in his heart was respect and admiration for a seasoned veteran in HIS profession...:dunno:

Lemon is dead so where is the award now? Did the Lemon estate give it back to Ving?

edit: I answered my own questions...

"Reportedly, even after the show was over, Rhames would not take the trophy back, even though Lemmon tried (unsuccessfully) to give the award back to Rhames.

However, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced later that they would have a duplicate award prepared for Rhames."

I don't know but here was Ving Rhames reaction about a day or two after he did that...

Many years ago - I forgot the name of that movie that Spike Lee hired Damon Wayans to do (Bamboozled), a lot of reporters asked me if I thought Spike Lee was doing that in reference to me. (Quick background: Rhames won a Golden Globe in 1998 and during his acceptance speech called fellow nominee Jack Lemmon onto the stage and gave him the award. Many people said Spike Lee was satirizing Rhames in Bamboozled because Wayans’ character makes a similar gesture). And I said, “You know what? I don’t know, but God bless Spike Lee.” I’m supportive of whatever a person is doing as long as it’s not against the Lord and it’s relatively positive. People can have their opinions of me or others, but I’m not going to let someone divide and conquer. The Lord knows we have many more problems in black America than movie images.

Nah. Ving was damn good as King. HBO knew they had fire back then and they pushed the shit outta that pic. However, Lemmon was fantastic in that role. I watched him Glengarry Glenn Ross and I said damn, the man is just a natural.

Ving was on point with that and he did something that would make history and actually outlast the awards and even that moment.

oNE

The truth is at that time not everyone knew it that Jack Lemmon was battling cancer which eventually took his life! That was the real motive behind Brother Ving Rhames gesture!
Another fact was that Jack Lemmon had never won a Golden Globe before. Ving really is a Good Brother and a great actor JMO!

Peace,

Don't forget Pulp Fiction

This can’t be emphasized enough. This brother allowed himself to be completely emasculated on film by that racist, weirdo fuck, Tarantino, to jump start his career. THEN he went on to star in a vehicle that further removed him from his manhood (and notice Hollywood rewarded him with an acting award for the gay shit but completely ignored his role in a film like Rosewood).

This cat participated in the continued dehumanization and marginalization of black men in the movies and on television. I’ve never been comfortable with him since then.

What do you think of Will Smith. Not saying you are wrong about anything you just said, I'm just asking.

Same thing. I didn’t approve of Will Smith portraying a gay man in Six Degrees of Separation because Hollywood has an exhaustive track record of attempting to emasculate black men by throwing dresses on them or making them homosexual. It’s comically obvious at this point. They’ve always been threatened by the perception of our hyper masculinity so they perform these celluloid castrations and I don’t respect any of these cats who keep signing up for it.
