That's the end result of Whites owning Black platforms. At this point, the only way Black artists can get a major push from the labels is if they are BUBBLEGUM for the most part. Meanwhile, they let the Whites say what they feel and express themselves creatively (Eminem, Macklemore, etc).
"Best political writing of the year" is ridiculous but I'm thinking Eminem's platform in 2017 is really as big as it ever was.

But if Keith Olbermann is praising Eminem because that's the extent of the praiseworthy rap he is exposed to, is the proper response really to say fuck Keith Olbermann as an individual?
"He wouldn't have heard anything if Em wasn't white"-- The issue is the people controlling what is heard, not the people listening to it.
It is right and even necessary (as far as anything is "necessary" in a hip-hop discussion) to lift up the people who are overlooked because of systemic bias.
But the focus has to be on the system that caused them to be overlooked, not the people who don't see or hear them.

Interesting that you mention Nas and Commom. They could've rapped the exact same thing but Olbermann wouldn't have given it props, he needs a white man to give him faith in rap.
He wasn't born in Detroit and talks about moving back and forth between the two. So its not quite birtherism but I don't really think it matters where he lived at 3 and at 7.

I don't think that's fair. I think it's possible that if this were a Nas or Common video trending to the same extent tonight, Olbermann would have seen it and very likely would have responded the same way.
The more I think about it, if Nas or Common came with it on national TV like that, it probably would have been trending pretty high, which is all this Eminem rap is doing right now.
Beyond that, I disagree with saying "Fuck Keith Olbermann" basically for the transgression of not being into underground rap. It is not his fault Nas or Common wouldn't get the same attention. Fuck the system and let's talk about that but it's a mistake to transpose the flaws of the system onto every individual.

I don't think his "doubts" about rap are very different from Chris Rock's. Rap music, as presented to the general public, is largely corporate trash. I think it is a bit unreasonable to expect a 60ish white person to be conscious of the great rappers of the 80s and 90s.
It's obviously an area of ignorance for him but I don't think it should be a litmus test, game changer or anything approaching a big deal.
