DETROIT (WJBK) - Earlier this month, 41-year-old Robert Pattison went to introduce himself to his fellow firefighters at Engine 55 at Joy and Southfield in Detroit. Second Battalion Chief Shawn McCarty calls it a tradition for firefighters.

"It's not mandatory, it's voluntary," he says. "You come in bearing gifts. The usual gift is doughnuts, but you are allowed to bring whatever you want to bring in."

And Pattison, a probationary firefighter, decided to bring a watermelon wrapped in a pink ribbon. We're told some African-American firefighters were instantly offended, since 90 percent of the people who work at Engine 55 are black.

"When you get your first detail at a firehouse you pretty much know what you are getting yourself into," says Patrick Trout. "So you would have to say it was probably a bad call."

FOX 2: "Is it racially insensitive to bring a watermelon into a fire house?"

"To some people," McCarty says.

FOX 2 spoke to Pattison by phone, who claims it was not a joke - and he did not mean to offend his fellow firefighters. But he clearly did. Fire Commissioner Eric Jones says the Fenton native was officially discharged.

In a statement Jones says: "There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Engine 55, a trial firefighter (probationary employee) engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department.

"After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the best course of action was to terminate the employment of this probationary employee."

In a world where racial tensions run high, some tell me the trial firefighter should have known better. Trout doesn't know if he meant anything by it - but feels it was a bad choice.

"For sure by far it was,"

The question is did DFD take it too far?

FOX 2: "Should he have lost his job over a watermelon?"

"I don't think so," McCarty says. "Between what he did and what was there are a few things that could have been done."

The Detroit Metro area is one of the most racially polarized regions in the country, this dude was 41 years old, a non-resident of the city, and knew just what he was doing, since he already finished his training he will more than likely get picked up by a suburban dept.

He will probably sue the city too.
He can't sue the city

Ok I’m on the fence with this one... That watermelon does look pretty good. Maybe they didn’t want to share it with the new guy.

I'm on the fence only because white folks eat more watermelon than we do. They freaking live for melon balls. I saw two white co-workers fussing with each other over one of them taking all the watermelon jolly ranchers last week.

I'm not sure I would have asked for his job, it would depend on how his behavior and attitudes toward black folks were otherwise. If he has no known issues, I would have settled for sensitivity training.

As an adult I've gained a complex about water melon and fried chicken, but not everyone is aware of the racial baggage associated with it. Not even all black folks are aware these days.

Plus the new firefighter was around 40 something years old so he knows better I see if he was 19 he maybe didn't know the significance of it but 40 years old in Detroit I don't want to hear it.

I understand but unless there was a history of poor behavior on his part, I think this is an over reaction. Had one of the black fire fighters brought it, we wouldn't be having this discussion, yet if the white guy was a racist, he'd still be getting a kick out of watching them consume it.

If we don't want to be associated and linked with these stereotypes, we need to not get upset unless there is obvious intent to offend, imo...

Maybe I'm getting older or I might just have Trump burn out or burn out in general, but I don't have the energy to keep getting riled up about this stuff ten different times a day.

He knew what he was doing. If you want to bring fruit you bring a fruit platter.

I'm a firefighter and I can agree that he knew exactly what he was doing. He only did it tho because his white firefighter veteran friends set him up to do it. He's a dumb ass for thinking his white privilege would save him unfortunately he'll just go be a cop now and end up shoving that watermelon up some poor brothas ass. Might have been better to give him some days in the street and let them nigguhs work the FUCK out of him! By the end of his first year he'd be screaming BLACK LIVES MATTER!

Under the circumstances most CACs wouldn’t have done this on a dare that involved cash. WTF was this idiot thinking? At 41; he was lucky to get on the Department; some have age ceilings that he is way past. What a dumb ass.

That's a big fuckin' watermelon, tho.

Was it seeded or seedless? If it was seedless, maybe it wasn't racist, but if it was a watermelon with the big black seeds then its racist as fuck.

This cac knew exactly what he was doing thats what whitey do best. So if he didnt know!!?? I still believe in the tooth fairy and santa claus too.. He lucky they didnt try to sabatoge his shit in the field during fire. So it was best they fired his ass!!!
