The issue is pretty clear cut to me.
if someone is good at or successful at what they do, that's great, but you can't realistically weigh those accomplishments against behavior and actions that you would condemn a random stranger for.
If R. Kelly was a completely random unknown stranger who was featured in a sex tape with a minor, the community at large would call for his head. If he then attempted to open a business or start a career, people would bring up that past behavior as a valid reason NOT to support him.
But he wasn't an unknown, he was a highly popular performer with a catalog of music good enough that people would make excuses in order to justify continued listening. Is it fair to punish R. Kelly via his career for a sex crime he was acquitted of? Maybe not, but we do it to Joe Schmoe everyday, so why not? Which song or music video was it exactly that tipped the scales of balance and made R. Kelly more good than evil?
Same thing goes for Bill Cosby. We can argue all day about whether or not Cos raped or fondled or drugged anyone. We can argue all day about whether or not all 50 or so of these women were out to get his money or paid off by someone else to destroy his character. In the end it doesn't really matter. Whether it was 1 woman, 50 women, or if it turns out that ALL of them are lying, because what we already know, what little Cosby himself already admitted to in that deposition, is more than enough for us to say "Fuck him", IF he were just some random dude we had never heard of before. If he were just John Smith, some random white dude who was wealthy but a famous tv personality, nobody would give two shits how much money he donated to HBCU's or how many careers he helped advance. But since it WAS Bill Cosby, he must be innocent, because druggy rapists don't give back to the community, right? There's no way he could be both a positive influence in the community AND a criminal sexual deviant, could he? So which accomplishment earned Cos the benefit of the doubt that a stranger in the same situation would not receive? Was it the onscreen character Dr. Huxtable? Was it the collection of honorary degrees from colleges that he donated to? At what point does the person you think he is become more important than the person he appears to be?
We will never be 100% certain of the past actions of R Kelly or Bill Cosby, that's a fact.
But we don't need to, because nothing about who we think they are has any bearing on what we're supposed to believe they are capable of.
But as black people, we're short on role models so we hold them to a different standard. Every time one of us fucks up, we see the singer, not the man. We see the actor/comedian, not the man. We see the mayor/congressman/senator, not the man.
If R Kelly had been a white man, and that video came out, he never would have made it to court.
And if 50+ black women had suddenly come forward and said Robin Williams had drugged/fondled/raped them, we would be clowning the fuck out of anyone for watching one of his movies.
