That's not my opinion. It's the conclusion of a monumental yearlong analysis of tens of thousands of statewide records conducted by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
The series' conclusion: Blacks consistently get harsher punishments than whites — longer sentences and fewer chances to avoid incarceration altogether.
Keep in mind: We're not talking about blacks getting tougher treatment because they commit more crimes or harsher crimes. We're talking about blacks getting harsher treatment when they commit the same crimes … with the same prior offenses … even in the same counties.
In one comparison cited by the Herald-Tribune, two 17-year-olds robbed different gas stations in Lee County. Both brandished guns. Both had precisely three prior records as juveniles. Both made off with a few hundred bucks. The black guy got four years in prison. The white guy avoided prison altogether.

In a Nassau County courtroom, whites convicted of felony drug possession net an average sentence of 224 days. Blacks charged with the same crime — and who have the same number of sentencing "points" for things like prior violations — got an average of 562 days, nearly a year longer.
Statewide, the analysis concluded that blacks were sentenced to 68 percent more time for serious first-degree crimes, 45 percent more for burglary and 30 percent more for battery.
Veterans of local courtrooms found the numbers disturbing — yet unsurprising.
Medicaid of millions gets a settlement deal. A home-healthcare worker caught bilking Medicaid for a few thousand bucks gets a prison sentence.
"Our clients always say: 'I would rather be guilty and rich than poor and innocent,'" Wesley said.
And black families are markedly worse off in that regard. CNN recently reported that white families in America have an average net worth of about $142,000 compared with about $11,000 for blacks.
The reality is that not everyone can afford the same justice.
So what's to be done?
We need diversity on the bench — a judiciary reflective of the citizens it serves.
But, as Perry noted, the state also needs to get proactive about studying and revealing these sentencing trends for itself, so it can see what needs fixing ... and not wait for another newspaper to do so.

For the things she was convinced for as a 1st time offender 5-10 plus probation is normal. 20 years isnt which is why this is a headline.......

There's a break down in our community we arent searching for the root of the problem we just say "i have no sympathy" while the prisons keep filling up with our own. But whites and other races make the same mistakes sometimes worse... and they get probation and Records expunged.

U are missing the point.. none is saying she should be let off or excused for her actions; the point is the sentence is too excessive and doesn't add up; all of us she be upset about the crime as well as being upset about the punishment; it's not just one part that needs to change, it's both!!!!
A fair, just sentence is based on the totality of the circumstances of that particular case. To base the sentence on factors outside of that is to advocate for mandatory sentences, which don't help anyone.

As a black father of a black daughter I feel horrible that she let some lil punks convince her to get involved in that shit and she is out there trying to protect they ass. The victim's mother even said ol girl shouldn't be taking the charge, it should be the shooter. But these young girls running behind these faggits thinking they in love and end up with 20 years.

If she is first time offender I think 20 years is harsh for setting up the robbery. She wasn't the trigger man, her thought process was probably " all I got to do is lure him in, what can happen to me? They not gonna kill him, just rob him and I get paid". As a youth we all have made some bad decisions that could have turned deadly. I know I have. But doing hardcore time for a bad decision like that is excessive. I agree with the trigger man getting 20 or Life, that's different.
