Longtime NFL Reporter Ed Werder Laid Off By ESPN

It was reported last week that the Worldwide leader in sports would be getting rid of upwards of 40-50 on-air personalities, including some high profiled big names.

On Wednesday, one of those names were dropped.

One of ESPN’s most experienced NFL reporters, Ed Werder, took to Twitter to announce he had been laid off by the company.

“ESPN is expected to lay off around 100 employees this week, as the network tries to reduce costs as it deals with declining revenues thanks to cord cutting. At least one other NFL reporter, longtime Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, has also been let go, and it’s likely that several notable names in the NFL media world will be without jobs soon.”

Pushing out the top pay 'tenured' guys. Business as usual or a restructuring from the hardly seen competition over the years.

I don't think anyone would cut the cord if they could get a fair price, I went from $150 a months to $29.99 with playstation vue. I get just the channels I need plus I can cancel at anytime. Can't beat it

The were going to allow a la carte type service, but the cable lobby killed that.

FS1 will cherrypick the cream of the fallen crop. The rest will scramble and try to link up somewhere else online. The days of getting that big check via broadcast are over. They're going to have to settle for a web property and make 35¢ on the dollar, as they bust their ass trying to build their own brand so they can launch something of their own.

Good luck. It's a cold world out there in the media landscape.

You may be right.
Clear channel and its competitor are both about to file for bankruptcy.

Fox sports are dumb. If Disney is making more money in the tv/movie business and refuses to spend money on sports, why would you (fox) hire their bloated talents when your tv/movie money isn't nearly as nice?

Barely watch ESPN anymore. Sportscenter doesn't really appeal to me. The highlights aren't that great. I watch NFL Network and that's about it.

That's pretty much the reason behind the layoffs. People just don't watch the network anymore. FS1 and these other sports networks aren't doing any better.
While the interest in sports is as high as it has ever been, there's just too many streaming/online options for people to get their fix now.
There's no need to watch SportsCenter to get highlights. The SportsCenter model has already been changed into more of a talk show format now.

Someone on Twitter said ESPN is just gonna be Stephen A. Smith and Lavar Ball screaming at each other for 15 hours every day.

Just too many options. FS1, NFL Network, MLB Network. Thanks to PlayStation Vue I will NEVER have cable again.

We gonna need a tutorial on that playstation setup.
I downgraded my DirecTV to a basic package - no main ESPN (have ESPNU & ESPNHD) I just wanna see PTI & HQ same day, not day after), no TV One/Centric but BET.

But as far as BIG NAMES in sports reporting - that model is DEAD!
Look for more female reporters or just let some writers with "insider "status (also in a dwindling field) speak what they write in publications/online for some change.

Berman & them who are day 1 employees got really generous contracts reflecting that fact. The managers from back then are mostly gone. One still there is that dude who caped for Sage, (he gonna make a special place with more $$$ for her, thinking she's a racial bullying victim).

Yep, new sports networks will use some of these BIG names to attract viewers in the short run.
