My bad, I'm just now seeing this. The image is from the Library of Congress site and in downloading they give you download options: low quality JPEG, high quality JPEG, and TIFF, & TIFF is the higher image quality better than high quality JPEG. I saved it it in TIFF, then I cropped the images as a TIFF. & to post them I converted them into JPEG, that's it.
