I think there needs to be a certain amount of respect for the office of the president regardless, which is why I was so upset when dems cheered when Bush got the shoe thrown at him while he was visiting Iraq. I can understand the disdain for Bush at that time, but the office is also a symbol of this country, and it showed a lessening of respect for our country which means it puts us in danger. Citizenship here is intersectional, just like many things. I can have love for my country and respect for the office of president, even as I take issue with things done on a local level with police brutality, etc. There are levels to everything, and it's not an all or nothing situation. However, the GOP started us on this path of being uncivil in politics. I expressly remember them giving instructions to people to go to townhalls and disrupt them, and dems following suit. Before then it was unheard of not to give respect to congressmen going to their districts to engage with citizens.
