Single mom scammed by man posing as good Samaritan

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The holiday season is upon us, and you might think people would be in a more giving mood this time of year.
But one single mom of seven -- down on her luck -- says she was ripped off by a Grinch who offered to help her move her belongings after she was kicked out of her home.
“I was like, "'I think my knight in shining armor pulled up,'" Lakisha Hodges said.
Hodges had been living with her kids’ father when he was evicted.
Everything she owned was put out on the curb, so she slept in her car with her baby to keep watch over it until she could figure out how to get it moved.
That’s when a man she thought was a good Samaritan stopped and offered to help.
“[He said], ‘I was just trying to see if you needed help. Do you want me to move you? I have a trailer, it’s right around the corner,’” Hodges said.
She says he seemed like a good guy.
“I trusted him. He looked like he could be trusted,” she said. “He saw my baby, he had a baby, he had his girlfriend.”
So he loaded up his trailer with her stuff, and said he would meet her at her mother’s place in another neighborhood.
But he never showed up.
“I started circling around the area, I think I went down every street in this vicinity,” Hodges said. “There was no guy, with no trailer, with none of my things.”
Thousands of dollars worth of furniture, appliances and her kids’ toys, gone in an instant.
“You packed up my whole house and rode away with it,” she said. “I don’t even have a stove for Thanksgiving to cook for my kids. I don’t have a refrigerator to put their food in. You took their bikes. You took everything.”
Now she has a message for others, so you don’t get scammed, too.
“Be careful,” she said. “This time of year, they’re preying on people. Not everybody is good at heart.”
Hodges says she filed a police report with Memphis PD, but they tell her there’s not much they can do because she didn’t get the man’s name or contact information.
She says he was driving a tan SUV, possibly a Yukon, with busted-out and taped-up windows.
She also tells WREG several people have already stepped up to help her out.
