I aint never seen at the time more hype for a high school player than Felipe Lopez; he should be right after LBJ...
Omar Cook
Eric Barkley
I do recall Lenny Cooke hype. But its been over ten years. Maybe my mind diminished his hype 'cause he never made it to the NBA.
OJ's hype was ALMOST as big as Lebron's, tho'.
I do recall the first time I saw OJ Mayo's HS highlights ...
...well, lets just say I'm not surprised he didn't even up being a perennial All-Star. He seemed to lack any special ability that would put him over the top in the NBA.
Fort Greene and Farragut's finest and both fucked up leaving St. John's too early. They both got surpassed by their counterparts who were viewed as interior talents (Jamaal Tinsley for Barkley and Andre Barrett for Cook)
Yeah Mayo hype was negative and positive because he stayed in shit....changed schools every year and was rumored to be old as hell the whole time.
I've seen him play and as a matter of fact we smoked his ass at Bob Gibbons tournament.
Your right he was never as good as they said but he had the shoe companies behind him pushing his hype
Good list though flawed. All were prodigies but I remember hearing about Eddie Griffin and Mike Bibby at least a year or two before I ever heard of Kobe Bryant for example.
amare sawyer had a hype team in high school. taylor bell fron the Chicago sun times was at the top of itRemember Amare Sawyer?
Anthony Glover was a bum though...They fucked up staying local and going to St. John's.. Just like my boy Anthony Glover,,, he was recruited by Arizona coming out of Rice and he could've been playing with Richard Jefferson and them but the dude decided to stay local and go to St Johns under that clown ass coach at the time.. No player under his watch went to the NBA except Artest
He got killed too soonNo Benji ?
My bad. I confused him with Tim Thomas. And either way Eddie Griffin was a known recruit early in his high school career. This is completely wrong. Eddie Griffin graduated high school in 2000 and Kobe graduated in 1996? How would you have heard of Eddie Griffin before Kobe? Kobe was on the national radar around 1994 when Ed was like 12 to 13.

Glover should have went to Zona just like Alimoe (RIP) should have went to Fresno State with Skip.
Honestly if your a four/five star recruit, your best bet is to leave your immediate area. Isaiah Whitehead was an All American coming out of Lincoln and stayed local at Seton Hall to his own detriment. Even though he did get drafted, if he went somewhere besides Seton Hall he woulda be a first rounder.
He busted Kris Dunn's ass and beat the eventual NCAA champs in the Big East Tournament Finals

One thing I'm noticing is a lot of brothers are naming good players based on their REGIONAL hype in their specific areas. For me, Most Hyped means players from areas of the country other than the area or region I live in, who I wouldn't have known a damn thing about if they weren't so hyped up. Obviously local talent is going to be hyped locally or regionally...
Barkley left because the NCAA kept fucking with his eligibility every week...he'd be reinstated, only to be suspended a few days later...this happened a few times during his last year at St. John's...
This kid was hyped beyond belief in high school. Bust in the pros after a good College career:

I'm pretty much a Hoosier basketball historian. Damon wasn't a pro bust. He wasn't expected to do shit in the pros. Drafted or picked up by the Pacers late, and sent up to Fort Wayne. He was like Hurley. Mufuka's knew his ass wasn't doing shit beyond college.![]()
Why didn't people expect him to go pro?
Totally agree...I'm pretty much a Hoosier basketball historian. Damon wasn't a pro bust. He wasn't expected to do shit in the pros. Drafted or picked up by the Pacers late, and sent up to Fort Wayne. He was like Hurley. Mufuka's knew his ass wasn't doing shit beyond college.![]()

He was the 90's version of Jordan Hulls; Bailey was a HOOPER though; put 40k+ in the Hoosier Dome for the Boys HS State Finals in the 90's; insane.
Athleticism and size. Getting drafted is one thing but succeeding at the pro level is different. Dude was a practical gamer. Smart and ice cold. Free throws, clutch plays. An extension of Knight. He was solid. But he also played with Calbert Cheaney. One of the best players I'd seen to that point.
Bailey was an Indiana basketball phenom, dude was right about that, but that's where it stopped. The Hoosiers of that time were a little different. A very controlled system prior to the Eric Gordon years.
Man, I haven't heard the name Calbert Cheaney in yeeears. Why did he pan out more? Dude had a real smooth game.
Man he was the truth. Never lost to the Fab Five. That's when I started really watching college basketball. Trying to get better as a player. And being from that state, that was my team.
But there were a lot of great college guards and forwards out of the Big Ten during those times. Big Dog (GOAT), Jalen, Respert, Jimmy Jackson, Finely, I could go on. The Ten was poppin.'
Chaney could do it all, inside, outside, defense. But then again, he came from a system. Indiana high school and college. He had sort of a "shy game" in the pros but could get busy on occasion. I'm pretty sure his Bullets teams gave the Bulls some fits in the early rounds and in the regular season. At the end of the day, he was just an Indiana kid, that didn't have that razzle dazzle that a lot of big city dudes had. He had a nice little run though.
Another IU great to look up is AJ Guyton. That dude was good too, but they were just some country kids at the end of the day. With a lot of talent.![]()

Saw Big Dog in HS as he's from the hometown. One man show ever night out. Completely made Alan Henderson his bitch in the 1991 Indiana State Finals.
