Chargers pull offer to Joey Bosa, say value to team in '16 'jeopardized' by time missed

SAN DIEGO -- In an action that could result in the team's first-round selection sitting out for the foreseeable future, the San Diego Chargers announced that they had pulled their offer to defensive end Joey Bosa after he declined to accept the team's "best offer" on Wednesday.

Points of contention in the contract impasse remain offset language and the earlier payment of deferred signing bonus money.

The Chargers said in a statement they presented Bosa with an offer Tuesday night that included:

  • an initial signing bonus payment that is larger than any rookie has received in the last two NFL drafts;

  • more money in 2016 than every rookie in this year's class except the Philadelphia Eagles' Carson Wentz;

  • the "largest payment and the highest percentage of signing bonus received in the first calendar" of any Chargers first-round pick since the adoption of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement in 2011.
The Chargers said Bosa, selected No. 3 overall in the 2016 draft, rejected the offer Wednesday.

According to a source familiar with the negotiation, the Chargers offered to pay Bosa 85 percent of his $17 million signing bonus at the time of signing, and the rest in the new league calendar year in March. Bosa's camp remained steadfast in receiving the entire signing bonus by the end of this year.

The Chargers also appear unwilling to move off of the inclusion of offset language in the contract, pointing to the fact that 29 of the 31 first-round draft picks in this year's draft have offset language in their contracts.

"The offer that we extended was for Joey to contribute during all 16 games and beyond. Joey's ability to contribute for an entire rookie season has now been jeopardized by the valuable time he has missed with his coaches and his teammates."

Chargers, on Joey Bosa

"The offer that we extended was for Joey to contribute during all 16 games and beyond. Joey's ability to contribute for an entire rookie season has now been jeopardized by the valuable time he has missed with his coaches and his teammates," the team said in the statement.

"Since Joey will not report at this time, his ability to produce not just early in the season, but throughout the entire season, has been negatively impacted.

"As a result, we will restructure our offer since Joey will be unable to contribute for the full 16 game season without the adequate time on the practice field, in the classroom, and in preseason games."

The Chargers and Bosa's representation stopped communication on July 28 once the team realized that the Ohio State product would not report to camp. However, talks picked up in the past two weeks, with the Chargers wanting to get Bosa into camp so the team could get him ready for the regular season.

Bosa is the only unsigned first-round pick from the 2016 draft.

Bosa cannot be traded this season as, according to NFL rules, he had until Aug. 8 to sign his contract in order for the Chargers to trade his rights to another team. If he were to remain unsigned this season, he is permitted only to sign with the Chargers until the first day of the 2017 draft.

Bosa's father, John, also was a holdout as an NFL rookie. John Bosa was a defensive lineman drafted No. 16 by the Miami Dolphins in 1987 and held out 41 days before signing his rookie contract, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Chargers dropped Bosa from third string to fourth string at defensive end on the team's latest depth chart. Darius Philon is listed as the starter, followed by Tenny Palepoi, Zamir Carlis and Bosa.

On one hand i'm actually happy they didn't give in to this entitled white boy and his loudmouth mother. On the otherhand as a Raiders fan I was hoping the Chargers signed him for big money because he is going to be a bust like his dad.

fuck it......let his entitled ass sit out this season.
greedy muthafucka aint played one snap and actin like he's owed 40 acres and a mule.

How was he entitled when they're the ones low-balling him

Right, the details of what they were trying to get him to sign would have most people who don't NEED to play saying fuck that, I'm not signing until you take 1 or the other off. The Chargers have a rep for doing shit like this to players and it's about time someone said fuck you. I've never understood why people take the owners side all the time. If a company was lowballing you and you have worth to other companies there's not a chance in hell you'd sign some garbage you didn't like either. Same shit.

How is that lowballing? He isn't a QB.

Damn.... this was a dumb dumb move on his part. What does he plan on doing sitting out the year? and then what. He can't reenter the draft. San Diego holds his rights.

I think he can reenter after the season. No team would draft him in the first round. You would see the collusion between owners.

If he doesnt sign a deal he can re-enter next year.

The Chargers are a horrible organization.

Simple, he wants his signing bonus all at once, not in installments... Which is why it's called a signing bonus. OR!!! Them get rid of the offset language... The Chargers wanted both. Which NO rookie has in their contract, Boss said 1 or the other. The Chargers balked, he stood by his principles. I respect him for that, and this is why the Chargers can never get their high picks signed consistently, when the wage scale is supposed to prevent this type of thing from happening. But again... People love to take the owners/establishments side in sports.

Truthfully I wish Antonio Brown would hold out. What the steelers are doing to him is criminal.

And,this is why I have no problem, what Von did, because these GM's can tell a player to take a pay cut or get cut from the team in the middle of a contract, but expect players to honor contracts.

I don't understand, this thing that you have to wait til the last year of your contract to negotiate a new one..If,he's valuable to your team then re-sign him immediately

How is that lowballing? He isn't a QB.

They want him to take less money what a typical third pick gets.

The Chargers have a history of being cheap and yet expect the players to play for them.

Why should he take less money when other third overall picks get about the same amount of money.

This is why the Chargers been shitty for years....

Yeap you are right, but 2017 is definitely the wrong draft for him to come out in that draft is going to be LOADED and no GM is going to sign this dude in the early rounds because of this.

Executives are going to throw out BS like he isn't in it for the team.

It's always some shit with the Chargers. It was damn near Heinz Field when the Steelers went out there to play them on Monday night football last season.
thats because they were ready to leave for LA when they got told they have to go back. Now they want a new stadium and want the taxpayers to pay for it. lol. with a shitty product on top of that and being notoriously cheap. Just horrible management.
I hate reading the Chargers media slant because the money is always going to make the player look bad. The truth is, they were holding out a full bonus AND wouldn't remove the offset language. Who does that?
As noted by Jamie Hoyle of the Bolts From the Blue blog, the Chargers may be relying upon team precedent, but NFL precedent isn’t on their side. Not only have recent No. 3 picks gotten at least one of the two concessions, but the same can be said for 16 of the 20 top five picks from 2012 through 2015. Bosa is simply asking for something that’s been granted to a vast majority of recent high draft picks.

also this would never happen in basketball. NFL has a monopoly so if you are not playing, you lose out. Basketball players could go to Europe and get paid rather well.

Dumbass Chargers should have taken DeForest Buckner
But I'm sooooo glad they did not
He slid right to the 49ers
DeForest Buckner + Arik Armstead + Chip Kelly

I didn't like, how Antonio Gates came out last week saying Bosa should be in camp....This is the same dude that was holding out not to long ago for the same reason :smh:

Fuck it, sit out, and go to a better team on a shorter contract as a late round pick. These NFL owners are ruthless and so he will be punished. If he somehow ends up with the pats at Rd 7, it will be a better career for him, just not as wealthy.

that franchise is terrible, this looks bad on all sides, including his agent for not getting this guy in camp.

He is useless this year as a rookie now, with no camp

Sorry ass Chargers. Could've drafted Tunsil. But they went with the exotic pick @ 3.:smh:

We like to do things our way.

Well, you should've traded down for a practical, easier signing. Now look atcha'. Stuck. That's what y'all get.

I think you guys are missing the point because he's a crakka. What he's asking for is the same deals 3rd round pics have been getting since the new collective bargaining agreement was signed. Can't be mad at him for that. Chargers stay on their bullshit. :smh:

It's not criminal. The Steelers will not open the door to negotiate with anyone other than QB's not on their last year of their deals. That's smart business. Brown will be the highest paid WR next year. He'll be fronted the rest of his money probably at the end of the month for his deal. DeCastro needs to be signed. Can't let one of the best guards in the game walk. Steelers do a good job moving money around and he's been told he will get his next year. Holding out never works. Antonio said this himself.

Man, it's brainwashing. LaDanian talking about, "Get your ass in camp" when he held out of his rookie camp 20 days! People taking management side always. His contract should be guaranteed - that part isn't in the Chargers leaked report. They don't want to pay his full signing bonus now - that isn't in the leaked report.

My boys an accountant. He said if he gets a $17M signing bonus and the team keeps $8M, they can put that $8M in CD's and make $160K off of the usual 4% interest in 6 months ( off of his money) - more if he its compounded interest (like $161,333 or some shit).

Don't sign that bullshit

I think Brown is about to get paid and the Steelers let Bell's weed smoking ass walk.
I don't think Bell will walk. I think he'll be resigned but he can clearly kiss that 15 mil a year goodbye. This is suppose to be a good year for running backs in the draft so that may not work out in his favor returning to the Steelers.

It is, but he took the money they offered ol boy that was with the dolphins then the bikes, and making 8 mil is not criminal because wasn't he was a low draft pick if memory serves me correct, so he upgraded, and will agàin,

Especially with tousaint looking decent from what ive seen in preseason, I hope he gets paid, but 1 weed incident, 1 missed test, isnt it like 2 major knee injuries...

My sentiments exactly. The NFL has a one-way contract system. You have to hold up your end of the bargain but they don't have to hold up theirs. They can cut you at any time and not owe any more money but you can't walk if you outplay your contract

No they get jammed up with money issues, and they are fucking Antonio. He has clearly outplayed his contract and should be rewarded man. I don't give a fuck about your prior rules he arguable a top three player in the game and not just receiver. Sometimes special player require special treatment and he deserves it. This coming from someone who was late on giving him his props.
