The New York Mets are going to look pretty different when the 2026 Major League Baseball season gets here.

Former New York closer Edwin Díaz reportedly agreed to a three-year, $69 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The bad news didn’t stop there, though. On Wednesday, the Baltimore Orioles reportedly agreed to a five-year, $155 million pact with longtime Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

“Breaking: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote on X on Wednesday. “Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.”

Alonso was a homegrown star in New York and is the organization’s all-time home run leader at 264 long balls. But MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported that New York didn’t make a “formal offer” to the star slugger.

“The Mets never made a formal offer to Pete Alonso, per source, as it became clear to them the bidding was heading to places they weren’t interested in going,” DiComo wrote on X on Wednesday.

Alonso played seven seasons as a member of the Mets and developed into one of the best overall sluggers in baseball over that span. In 2025, he launched 38 homers, drove in 126 runs, and won the National League Silver Slugger Award at first base. That’s a lot of production for New York to replace.
