Suicide Squad Is on Track to Break Summer Box-Office Records, But There’s a Catch

It's a high-pressure month for Warner Bros. The studio’s make-the-villains-the-heroes attempt to get its DC film universe on track with Suicide Squad is falling way short of critical hopes, as it polls under 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes,

even as the movie is being projected to have the biggest August opening ever by making $125 million at home in its first weekend, and more than $100 million overseas. Throwing more fuel on the joy fire, Squad has the highest presales of any August release in the history of Fandango.

Huzzah, DC, right? Well, before anyone gets too excited, be sure to consider that Squad needs to succeed for more than just one weekend to avoid being embarrassed.

Consider that Batman v Superman screamed out of the gate with $166 million and ended up grossing almost $900 million worldwide, but it was heavily derided by critics and fans alike. The result? Warner Bros.restructured and spun up a new entity called DC Films to make sure their ultra-high-budget spectacles were also, you know, worth watching.

Batman v Superman, much like its predecessor, Man of Steel, hardly had any legs at the box office.

After massive opening weekends, both films saw steep drops in their week-over-week earnings. Steel only kicked around theaters for 14 weeks at home, and Dawn of Justice lasted even less time and bowed out after 12.

Compare that to legitimate successes — both critically and financially — like Guardians and Deadpool, which ran for 22 and 18 weeks, respectively. Hell, even Marvel’s stepchild property, Ant-Man, had the same box-office run as Guardians, and it got a Certified Fresh critical rating, too.

Take all of that into account and suddenly the massive opening-weekend projections for the poorly reviewed Suicide Squad become a necessity instead of a Champagne-worthy achievement.

It has to earn back that $175 million budget (which doesn’t count the cost of marketing) fast in the event that its box-office tail ends up being as short as the rest of its DC cohort.

It seems like there’s a hyperspecific record broken every week at the movies these days, but with the measure of blockbuster success being billion or bust — just ask Dawn of Justice — starting your cinema run with $240 million only to possibly see your ticket sales drop by more than half in the second week isn’t going to get you to the ten-digit mark.

Maybe the combined power of fanboys and fangirls and Margot Robbie is enough to lift Suicide Squad out of the DC slump. But the scope of the movie's success won’t be determined after week one. It will be determined by whether or not Warner Bros.' latest effort is still around in theaters after two months.

Damn.... I'm a little disappointed about the poor reviews... I really wanted to see this this weekend.... Might as well wait a few more and catch it at the budget theater... Haha

I don't give two shits about the box office numbers with this one. I just want it to be good. DC can't take another lost right now.

Suicide Squad Box Office: Massive Record Breaking Opening Sees Alarming 41% Drop On Saturday

Suicide Squad might be a mess of a film, bashed by critics and fans alike, but that hasn’t stopped moviegoers from buying tickets opening weekend.David Ayer‘s comic book adaptation had a huge opening weekend, earning a massive $135 million domestically, shattering the previous August US box office record (Guardians of the Galaxy has held the crown for two years with its $94.3 million opening in 2014). The film has also grossed over $267 million worldwide, but it will need three times that to break even. If the movie’s Saturday numbers are any indication, the bad word-of-mouth buzz for this film will only result in dramatic diminishing returns in the coming weeks. Let’s take a look at the Suicide Squad box office, after the jump.

Suicide Squad Box Office Analysis
It is projected that Suicide Squad has to make at least $750 million globally (probably closer to $800 million) for the studio to break even, never mind make a profit. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which had a similar reception critically, only made a two times multiplier of its opening weekend. If Suicide Squad performed similarly, it would end up somewhere around the $650 million mark.

The film has yet to open in 9 international markets (Egypt, Denmark, Pakistan, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, and Japan). More importantly, the film will likely not see a release in China — this could have meant another $100-150 million for the film’s global box office (even if Hollywood studios only get back about 20%-25% of the money earned in the country).

Suicide Squad made a huge $65.1 million at the Friday box office, but most industry analysts took note that the film had a huge drop from Friday to Saturday. Box Office revenue dramatically declined 41 percent from Friday to Saturday. This decrease is worse than Batman V Superman‘s drop which fell only 37.9 percent from its large Friday opening. To give even better perspective, the previous August record holder Guardians of the Galaxy saw only an 18 percent drop from Friday to Saturday. It is believed that the film’s poor word-of-mouth is to blame for the drop in attendance.

So the question is: how will Suicide Squad do in the coming weeks.Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which had a similar reception, lost almost 70% of its audience in its second weekend.

One thing can’t be denied: the marketing for Suicide Squad was amazing. Warner Bros’ marketing department should win awards for the marketing campaign for this film, and it certainly got people interested, but unfortunately a lot of moviegoers seem to be finding that the fun film they’re selling isn’t the dark and violent film which is in theaters. No wonder the film is trending down thanks to the resulting negative buzz in both reviews and online social media.

It’s also worth noting that Suicide Squad broke August IMAX records, earning $18.2 million on 636 IMAX screens globally, also surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy , which opened with $15.9 million worldwide in IMAX screens. The film will have a two week run in IMAX theaters before its replaced by Ben-Hur on August 19th 2016.

Here are the numbers for the top ten box office releases for the weekend:

1. “Suicide Squad” — $135 million
2. “Jason Bourne” — $22.7 million ($103.4 mil.)
3. “Bad Moms” — $14.2 million ($51 mil.)
4. “The Secret Life Of Pets” — $11.5 million ($319.5 mil.)
5. “Star Trek Beyond” — $10.2 million ($127.9 mil.)
6. “Nine Lives” — $6.5 million
7. “Lights Out” — $6 million ($54.7 mil.)
8. “Nerve” — $4.9 million ($26.8 mil.)
9. “Ghostbusters” — $4.8 million ($116.7 mil.)
10. “Ice Age: Collision Course” — $4.3 million ($53.5 mil.)

I saw the movie Friday night. It was Ok. It wasn't complete garbage as some critics
have stated but it wasn't totally great either.

I like the casting of this film but the writing and
direction seemed to be lazy as fuck though.

Friday Box Office: 'Suicide Squad' Plunges 79%, Holding No Better Than 'Batman V Superman'
http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...o-better-than-batman-v-superman/#184238056645

With relatively strong weekday numbers and halfway decent audience polling, there was a hope that Suicide Squad would avoid the massive second-weekend drop that befell Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in April of this year. That DC Comics sequel fell a whopping 81% on its second Friday, which was a record for a major comic book superhero movie. Well, meet the new boss, same as the old one. David Ayer’s supervillain team-up caper earned $13.35 million on its second Friday, a drop of 79% compared to its (admittedly Thursday previews-inflated) $65m opening day.

That brings its eight-day total to $192.4 million domestic, meaning it will inevitably cross $200m sometime today in nine days of release. As far as massive Friday-to-Friday drops, it’s sadly in the same league as Watchmen (-78.4%), The Dark Knight Rises (-76.6%), Green Lantern (-72%), and Man of Steel (-71.5%).

It seems like it's going to do 300 mill, which I thought no way...but it still won't catch guardians which is crazy to me

Guardians of the Galaxy is light years better than Suicide Squad.....

I am more hyped to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than a Suicide Squad sequel

IF Guardians didn't have that soundtrack that shit wouldn't have been anything. I Really don't get the disconnect fans have with DC over Marvel. Maybe I have to be a comic reader to get it.

What are you smoking, GotG had a better storyline, character development, editing and pacing........The soundtrack was used much better than SS, in SS it felt like it was just thrown in to try to capture what Marvel did GotG. You need to thank Marvel for making GotG because if they didn't do it, DC would not have fathom a SS movie..

I'm not saying its not a better movie i'm just saying that shit wasn't that great. I loved the movie but the way people talk about DC Films and Marvel....its like i'm in the Twilight zone. Like I seen Iron Man...i've seen Thor....i've seen Ant Man....are they good movies? Yeah. Great ones? No. That much better than DC films? Not really.....well not much better than Batman V Superman or Suicide Squad. But understand, i'm a casual movie viewer not a comic book reader.

to be honest

I dont think any of the comic book movies are really that good

Watchmen IMHO is miles ahead of the standard dc/marvel films

But that goes to show how great GOG was/is.

It didn’t rake in STAN money it raked in HOLY SHIT THAT WAS A SOLID FILM IN AND OF ITSELF money.

99% of the people who watched it had no clue who any of the characters were. Alot of people know Ironman and Superman is an icon.

I watched that shit under the pleads of my mom - who doesn't know fuck all about comics- and had to call her back to apologize after watching.

GOG was a great movie in it's own right.

*two cents *

I agree. And it's funny that it came from Zach Snyder but I agree I loved Watchmen. These other films that people like? I just don't see it or maybe it's just not for me to get.

I enjoyed it but I guess what I'm saying is that I consider all these movies to be on the same level...... Like if Guardians is a 7 out of 10 I consider Suicide Squad to be a 6.

New question:

Since Geoff Johns is now heading the DC Universe now (and i believe it starts with Wonder Woman) do you think that things will change for the movies?

Watchmen was a snooze fest...

People act like Watchmen was a deep graphic novel, but it was simple easy one that eveyone can figure out

Trust me I wanted to Suicide Squad to be good...but I wasn't invested into their characters except maybe Will Smith and Harley Quinn.......

I dont think it will make 800mill globally; film is dying as we speak; I think it will finish around 675-725 globally...

I agree completely; I was comparing the numbers that GOG did compared to SS; SS sets august record and still wont do as much as GOG; DC should feel real stupid about it; but it probably want; their movies are trash and not that good, no matters the numbers; I see their other movies falling also...

I agree. And it's funny that it came from Zach Snyder but I agree I loved Watchmen. These other films that people like? I just don't see it or maybe it's just not for me to get.
winter soldier was the best marvel film cause it was like a spy movie with people with special powers..it dosen't fit the format of any other marvel flick..it also had the best bad guy in a marvel flick.. like i said b4 dc had the best badguys with joker and zod/crew..marvel had more better films overall..the ironman series was trash..2 and 3 shitfest 1 was juss ok.. winter soldier is what made me even care about any marvel flick
