Comedian W. Kamau Bell was on CNN’s Legal View on Friday to talk about the Dallas ambush on law enforcement and the renewed discussions on criminal justice that have followed this week’s fatal shootings from police officers. As the discussion came to a close, the comedian nearly struck Ashleigh Banfield silent as he told her about the incredibly blunt way he said he would oneday explain the events of the week to his infant daughter.
After the discussion that also featured Donnell Rawlings, Banfield brought up pictures of Rawling’s son and Bell’s daughter, and she asked them what kind of conversations they have with children about weeks like this one.
Even though Rawling’s extensive account didn’t leave Bell with a lot of time, he needed only a few seconds to leave Banfield thoroughly bemused.
“She shouldn’t be surprised if she comes home and finds out one day that daddy has been killed by a police officer.”
They talked at length about the frustrations of the Black Lives Matter community that were the subjects of last night’s protest in Dallas. The discussion touched on everything from the need for accountability in policing, to the implications the shooting might have on the national perception of BLM’s message. “I was hoping you weren’t going to say that,” Banfield responded to Bell in dismay.
