Hell nah! The same director for this episode was the same as last year's "Hardhome," which used a similar on-the-battlefield, in-your-face, hectic style of direction. Fuck the Revenant! Hardhome was first.

Good question. Tough call. I definitely know that with more numbers they would have had a better strategy (sneak attack?). Probably over powered Ramsay and taken less casualties (Wun Wun lives). However, Jon would definitely still tried to save Rickon.
Then again Ramsay finds out they have more troops and devises a new scheme. Jon still plays into his hands due to Rickon.
NExt season, the Red Witch resurrects Rickon.

Sansa is rising Senior in the Littlefinger school of Political chicanery. Littlefinger's strategy is always to inject a bit of chaos into situation which he remain isolated from. By not telling John she is allowed to weaken Jon (killing off a lot of the wildlings) without sacrificing her primary goal of reclaiming Winterfell. Now she has Winterfell and strength of Arms to tell Jon Snow to go kick rocks if she so chooses.
But let's say she told him. Jon Snow would have waited til Littlefinger and the troops from the Eryie arrived. Ramsay doesn't do the parlay, probably shoots Rickon over the wall in Catapult, and just prepares for a siege. Given time to prepare without any loss of troops they probably do a better job defending the castle than they did after the battle. Ramsay then has time to call in his reserves or the damn Freys to assist. They aren't that far away at Riverun.
Jon Snow would probably still be waiting outside winterfell, until Littlefinger got bored and left.
