The remake of "Roots" is not a complete surprise.
Hollywood is in the business of taking past success and regurgitating them for a new (younger) audience.
This version of Roots is a direct result of the surprising success of movies like:
Thus; Hollywood figures that they will strike while the iron is still
hot.
They start producing shows that are in the same vein. Like:

And let's face it; Hollywood has
NEVER been comfortable producing images of Blacks outside of those narratives.
We're either slaves, thugs, pimps, ho's, criminals, "reality show thots", bed wenches and just plain dysfunctional...
Which is part of the reason why
The Black Panther needs to be a success.
