Aries Spears on Key & Peele Not Being Chosen by the Black Community

Dudes in here are missing the point. Key and Peele came after Dave Chapelle who had a much edgier style of humor that did at times mock what white people BELIEVED of Black people. That's why it worked so well and appealed to Black people cause we saw the inside joke.

Key and Peele have always come across as very safe comedy that goes out of its way to not make white people uncomfortable. Occasionally they'll have a good skit like "Magic Negro" or "Negrotown" but most times they're playing to the "I don't feel Black enough" crowd and that's a very small group of people.

On a side note Spears made a real good observation. The fact that both dudes are interracial and both married white women says a lot about how they feel about themselves. To me its telling.

I think these brothers are hilarious, and I have tuned into their show on occasion.

Being a fan that goes so far as to check them out religiously is what I am not, though.

It's because their comedy isn't for us, it's for white people.

This is dead-on for me.

Folks need to leave them alone because they have their lane while others have theirs, for example I don't want to see a CAC or some other black comedian doing this..

Now there are some fools who will say that science and physics are for cac's and nerds but I beg the differ... To me that shit was funny as hell and to me a lot of their comedy isn't as dumb down as a lot of other black comics... For example Kat Williams shit sounds dumb down as shit, most of the times and thats cool if your in a certain mood, but to me you need them all, all of the spectrum because thats who we are as people...

I thinik them being raised by white mothers has more to say about who they are than who they actually married..

That Negrotown skit ... :smh::angry: Would a country in Africa be considered by white people as "Negrocountry"? Black people, please wake up. Anything that white folks let you do within the context of racism/white supremacy is meant to strength the system and their position as individual white people. It is not meant to weaken the system.

Please pay attention.
That was actually a deep pro black skit, it was sarcasm that cleverly points out the racism that blacks have to go through.. This may be considered white people comedy because white people do it all the time, they will make a movie that many blacks think its cool but in reality they are underhandedly dissing us... Well in similar fashion they are underhandedly dissing white supremacy while pointing out what we have to go through... They key is they do it in a safe, happy playful manner, almost in a manner that a racist white person would considered funny.. But this is the key to getting over the dissess and insults to them...
Now look at the video again and peep how they are dissing white people, in a way that may be entertaining to them..

Man I hate that "you ever been around a buncha niggas and be like damn where da weed and hoes?"*do confused disgusted face* comedy.
Im from the hood and yes that has its place but that shouldn't be required from all black comedians... Matter fact, I hate hearing a black comedian talking the same old lame shit, someone fucking, someone getting their ass kicked, some weed stories, and some no good nigga/bitches... Thats ok, sometimes, but there is more to life than those few topics...

Yeah some people really missed the point with Negrotown skit. It was genius....playing up on the fact that Black people want what everyone else does....a place to live where you don't get fucked with. @missing that point. It went over his head.

Funny how many call Clinton the black president because he got high and cheated on his wife... Its like we define black as someone fucked up, and if your not, then your not down...
Now I think thats racist!!!
What gets me is that we claim not to be monolithic people but there are those who want to limit black folk to what they believe is black. So you can not do this and you an not do that. How dos one advance by not opening up their minds and experiences?
In my experience he seems that most times the people who want to define what blackness is tend to be of a lower socioeconomic status (and don't want to change their circumstances).

People find safety in comfort. Not trying new things or labeling them "white" wraps that safety blankie a little tighter around one's body. I'll try anything once, because the worst case is I don't like it, but now I know for sure that I don't like it.

Man I had a friend who was into radio controlled planes, and was told he wasn't black due to him having a white boy hobby...:smh:
Imagine how many great black scientist and mathematicians are lost due to the fear of being ostracized by the so called black community... Bad enough we have CAC's posting up glass ceilings we have black folks doing it just as bad...

And we were made to feel comfortable being slaves, and this culture has been passed down, and still exists with us today...

Yet after slavery black folk wanted to do things and were not held back by some artificial term like "blackness" (they were held back by racism). Integration is what fucked us up the most. That when people became comfortable with buying white folk services and goods. We didn't need to depend on ourselves as much or to innovate. We also got caught up in sending our kids to college to prepare them to work for someone else. Now we are held back by black folk before racism even gets a chance to do it damage.

Thanks, Carlton.

But really, what's up with Aries? Looks like he got punched in both eyes by some AIDS infected junkies.....after they injected him with AIDS and made him homeless.
He has that unhealthy look that ironically many black people feel is part of the black experienced... I remember when I was younger folks used to tell me that high blood pressure and diabetes (sugar) was part of being black and just something we all go through..
I never accepted that shit in my mind and decided to eat right, ride bikes instead of driving, swimming at the beach and other things not considered "black" as the result I look good and healthy while a lot of those real niggas look just the way Aries look today..

Thanks, Carlton.

ok i wasn't the only person that was looking like nig looked like he got his ass kicked like he owed somebody money... nig looking like he bout to ask vlad for a loan cause some nigs after him if he don't make payments

Exactly, all you have to do is look at obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes in the black community then realize no KKK made us eat them pork chops..

thats why I said:
The issue i have is that apparently being black "blackness" basically involves diction and class level. The worst the diction and lower the class level the more "authentic" the blackness is.

thats how it seems to be defined.

and for those who didn't know Toni Morrison did an opinion essay where she talked about the controversies going on in clintons presidency and the level of disrespect he faced from the republicans:

After all, Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald’s-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas. And when virtually all the African-American Clinton appointees began, one by one, to disappear, when the President’s body, his privacy, his unpoliced sexuality became the focus of the persecution, when he was metaphorically seized and body-searched, who could gainsay these black men who knew whereof they spoke? The message was clear: “No matter how smart you are, how hard you work, how much coin you earn for us, we will put you in your place or put you out of the place you have somehow, albeit with our permission, achieved. You will be fired from your job, sent away in disgrace, and—who knows?—maybe sentenced and jailed to boot. In short, unless you do as we say (i.e., assimilate at once), your expletives belong to us.”

Essentially she was saying that Clinton, the president of the US..was being treated like any nigga on the street.

Thanks, Carlton.

I've always wondered the same thing

Nigga has always looked unhealthy

Except that's not why he called black.

Some of the subliminal messages that im getting from some of these comments are hilarious. I bet we got a lot of folks in here who either got teased for not being "Black enough" or Black folks who purposely make their voices sound nasally around White folks. Agreeing to play multiple roles everyday to make other people comfortable starts to wear you down over time..

One thing Aries said that I agree on, the joke just has to be funny. Some of these guys are obviously tryna "please" a certain crowd...instead of perfecting their craft.

Some of our people have embraced the negative stereotypes. Hence the term "real niggas". It's synonymous with negative, self destructive behavior. This shit makes me angrier than cac cacin'. Why? Because I expect that from them. I know we're better than this. We're better than what hiphop portrays us to be.

Bro I feel you with that, my thing is, if you got to do shit to please other men, regardless of race, man that's a slippery slope!!
