Aries Spears on Key & Peele Not Being Chosen by the Black Community

The issue i have is that apparently being black "blackness" basically involves diction and class level. The worst the diction and lower the class level the more "authentic" the blackness is.

thats how it seems to be defined.

I live in Detroit, been here for a years and years. Keegan Michael is from the D but doesn't wear it on it shoulder so niggas don't know. "Real niggas" in the D as Aries says know this cat "Keegan" and are proud of him...but because they don't tap dance "Key and Peele"...for us or Whites, Key and Peele not Black enough. Ok.

For me, Aries hit it on the head (6:00) how I see these two comedians. That's coming from someone who worked with them on a TV show (MadTV)

whats comedy for black people?

There's two ways one could've taken my statement, you took it the exact wrong way.

It's not about comedy for "Black people", much of their comedy is a display of the Black experience\Black side of things designed to make other races laugh.

Aries gave a good example of the voices that they sometimes use in their sketches. The Obama sketch is a good example, slightly funny but they're using exaggerated "Black guy" voices and speaking patterns.

If you don't understand that, go enjoy their movie.

but dave chappelle and the wayans and chris rock did the same thing...would you say that for them too?

I hate the term "Real Niggas"

I understand where you're coming from but I do my think that's not the perspective that I'm speaking of. Aries touched on it a bit but it has more to do with the type of comedy that they're using.

and this goes back to the definition of whats blackness.

It's about "Blackness" but not the way that you're thinking. When they perform in what they perceive as their "Black voices", they're loud and boisterous with the "Yo Yo Yo's". When in reality if someone came to us talking like that we'd ask them "Why are you talking like that".

Aries hit it right on the head. They're doing blackface comedy from the perspective of white people but they happen to be Black, if that makes sense.

i got what he was saying but you could make the same case with an italian comedian who imitates the goombahs in brooklyn or an irish comedian doing a boston southie kid or a hillbilly/redneck in the south.

yeah theyre grossly exaggerated but thats the point.

I'm Black so I can only speak from my perspective, I can't speak on how they feel.

Most Black comedians speak on their experience because they're Black, they're not adding the "Because I'm Black that this is the way Black people do it" context.

I have nothing against Key & Peele and wish them much success, I just understand what Aries was saying .

Not sure how Aries Spears gets to speak on blackness... Not sure what he's done for the 'race'... This seems pretty black to me... Wonder if the same black folks who think Kevin Hart is funny with jokes about being a small, unthreatening black man think this would be funny as well.... As far as I'm concerned they've got great skits for the most part.

And for fucking real. How is Russell Simmons speaking on black people in 2016?!?!? Man years ago I used to eat at this indian spot for lunch around midtown. This fucking guy was so off the fucking wall. He'd have lunch meetings there with nothing but white folks talking about his religious bullshit about weird ass demons and namaste bullshit. Then he pushed the fucking rush card--a usury institution. Black people should bark down Russell Simmons. He's got shit to do with black folks in 2016

Man these cats talking are out of touch with what 'blackness' is in america in 2016. This fucking guy Aries Spears talking about dating white women as a sign of blackness?!?!?! Really? Aries Spears is so fucking ignorant it hurts. Acting like he's black because he speaks with colloquial slang from wherever the fuck he's from? Wow...

Just because you are black doesn't mean you are capable of talking about socio-economic issues regarding race. Why don't we leave that to people who spend their lives studying the issues and researching and experimenting the topics. I don't want to hear comedians and athletes opine on complex topics. Jeez... I'm getting dumber listening to his rambling.

I see Spears hatin ass has softened his bullshit stance on Chapelle.. and started to walk it back and clean it up.. When Chapelle was at the top of his shit Aries used to question his "blackness"... Not knowing the nigga grew up "blacker" than him.
i like his interview on vlad. not cooning just straight spittin real shit.

That Negrotown skit ... :smh::angry: Would a country in Africa be considered by white people as "Negrocountry"? Black people, please wake up. Anything that white folks let you do within the context of racism/white supremacy is meant to strength the system and their position as individual white people. It is not meant to weaken the system.

Please pay attention.

I saw Keanu was bored, offended and failed to see the humor.

Secondly I grew up with a lot of biracial kids. They go two ways in my experience:

a)trying too hard to be black and get caught up in the system
b)trying too hard to be biracial and lose black identity.

Mostly they're lost and depending on what identity they choose; they'll go overboard for approval from its members.... Key and Peele work real hard for the approval of CACs and you can feel it.

To me, that's more offensive than being called a "n*****", because that thought process is calling all other black people n*****.

Black people: "why do you talk so white?", "you listen to white people music"(odd because black people created rock), "skydiving, that's white shit"

Non black people: "you went to the symphony, you're not really black", "your dad taught you to swim? Unbelievable", "you are in an improv group, that's so white"

Those are a few quotes I've heard. White people shit is raping children and having your employer help cover it up, not going to anime conventions and using words that have more than four syllables. That shit pisses me off so much man.

Peele is dope. Other dude does nothing but scream. He's a light skin Kevin hart. Dude scream all his lines. Can't watch him. But peele is mad talented.

To me, their humor is sometimes funny, sometimes corny- I get the most out of the sketches where they are playing "average joe" type guys: ie: the sketch where they would look around before saying "bitch" about their women- or the one where shapeshifting aliens invaded, Earth and they knew an imposter because a white woman was welcoming of two black dudes.

In both of those skits, race is a factor, in that the skit doesn't work without preconceived notions, or at least knowledge on prevailing attitudes about race- but for the actors themselves, they are just some guys. Not acting over-hoodlike (like many of their sketches) or over Ward Cleaver either.

I don't think I would pay to see their movie Keanu, but I'll probably give it a spin in when it opens at BGOL cinema.

Maybe a some of that identity problem comes from not being accepted by either group- being forced to "choose a side" in the first place and being unable to simply be themselves. White folks will tolerate,(as long as they act "white" enough for other whites to be comfortable around them) but never fully accept someone biracial. We see that breakdown all the time when someone gets their "negro wake up call".

As far as black folks accepting biracial people... well, just do a search on this board for "half-breed", "mutt", "mongrel" or similar terms, and you can see for yourself.

And is this a Vlad TV interview? Aries seemed awfully comfortable throwing that N word around in front of the white guy interviewing him.
