Maino on How Desiigner Gets Away with Sounding Like Future

Funny thing is even when other regions used to want to sound like New York, New Yorkers never accepted it. Now that they are sounding like everyone else, we're all cool with it. They can learn from that and humble the fuck out.

So they created hiphop. Cool.

Hey had to use funky southern music to make the beats, and they're all migrated from the south anyway. Relax New York, you're a part of the rest of the states and the wider world now. Come on in. We will always love that boom bap sound.

Me and my wife were watching American Idol a couple of years ago. They were in Connecticut or some shit doing auditions. There was this black kid from Brooklyn that stepped to the mike. JLo was like 'Where Brooklyn at! Where Brooklyn at!'

Dude looked totally confused. I think he said something like, 'We over here! We over here!'

JLo looked hurt. I was fuckin stunned. These NYC kids don't know their own history.

And this is how you end up with Designer a/k/a The Day After Tomorrow.

True, but to play the devil's advocate most of these kids grew up hearing nothing but trap music on the radio and television. If a kid is 20 years old, he was 10 in 2006. We all know the south dominated the airwaves at that point. When I was 10 Ice Cube, Kane, etc was killing it, hence the reason I gravitated (and still gravitate) towards that music....despite how much I like things that came out in later eras.

I think that's where NYC radio killed the culture. They willfully ignored most NYC acts until 50 came out of the west.

I like to bick back smoke bronic and listen to good music. I remember how bocky NYCers used to be about hiphop and its ironic seeing them bite other areas now.

I never understood why NYC wouldn't support NY artists more.

One thing about Atlanta radio, they play the local people and give them a chance.
Man!!! You ain't lyin. You could make record on Wednesday, give it to Gregg Street on Thursday, it would be on the radio on Friday and in the club on Saturday.

Go to Greenbriar an holla at Ommp Camp, shit would be on the radio. Chris Lova Lova would even put niggas on. It was crazy.

I don't really care, but he's clearly biting off future, period. If future was out of the game or semi-done, it wouldn't be that serious. Taking some of his money.

Every rapper biting off the next

It's not the 90s anymore we need to let it go I can't get into majority of this shit but hey... I don't buy music so why would they cater to me

My son 16 he loves Drake n ymcmb artists nobody else

NYC became a slave to the dollar in the worst way....Payola always existed, but in the late 90s it was sent into overdrive...Radio hasnt been the same since.

The irony is, I remember a time when Dj's like Flex would play local and upcoming people....Then it changed overnight :smh:

The support thing is real, I always admired the south for that reason, they all stuck together..In Ny its too many chiefs and not enough indians

Also, the FCC Telecommunications act in 1996 played a part in it. Multiple radio stations were able to be acquired by big wig corporations who really didnt care about the culture, they just wanted to maximize their profits...That contributed to the watering down of radio in many ways. In fact, its one of the reasons radio stations started playing the same songs multiple times on the hour, and stop giving upcoming artists a shot.

i think its the fuckin new york accent that hit new york hip hop the most. i know it sounds stupid but new york niggas sound dated even when they speak because of the accent. just an opinion tho

Fock that. I like lyrical rappers. Don't like Wayne don't like future. I'll stick to the boom bap.

Dude I go to any state outside of nyc, the NYC accent is accepted and loved. Been to Texas, been to southern Cali where I spoke Spanish, cats still knew I was from NYC. The NYC accent isn't the problem. NYC has lacked originality because a lot of young cats are lazy. How come Joell Ortiz isn't featured on Tracks. Ya'll know why.

America is gonna integrate everything so this will be the norm, they want to eliminate culture period and have everyone who comes here blend into theirs. A kid from Brooklyn with Jamaican parents don't talk like thst bro, that's a slap in the face to NY music but NY isn't the NY it used to be everything is integrated now. Maino is old school hip hop head, he realizes it.

It's about money now, not culture and family for the most part. He knows was up but he won't speak on it like that.

I always say NY is trapped in a time machine and never evolved.

NY has always been locked away from everyone else and totally out of touch. Its like their arrogance is biting them in the ass now...And this is coming from someone who spent time growing up out there.

Also, I was lucky enough to have the chance to travel in and out of state when I was growing up, unlike many of my friends who are still out of touch with music and the world in general smh.

I agree, I get love everywhere I go, because I go with the flow and chill...But I do think alot of people associate the NY accent with being arrogant and thats where the disdain comes from.

Fab all NY got left

The rest of them niggas fell off hoard

dudee hip hop is weapon controlled by crackers used to control

our youth...

which is why there is no unique style... everybody dressing and sounding like everyone else....

hip hop been hijacked by the industry....

how else could a drake be on top of it all right now......?

he just goes around hopping on what ever is hot... and riding their coat tail,

he wouldve been called out for that shit..

but in todays game its acceptable..

action bronson bit Ghostface Killers whole fuckin SOUND...

and he rode that shit to sell out shows and his own cooking show on t.v..

knowing gotdam well he dont speak like that normally.....

annnnnnnnnnnnnnddddd when new yorkers migrated out to atlanta...

and I mean a fuckin MASS MIGRATION out there in the 90s, everybody was blaming new yorkers for their crime rate going up...

but now that ALL of a sudden Atlanta is on the map... Nobody is saying NOTHING about the mass migration that set the precedence for that.....

I know dudes that moved out to atlanta in the 90s and they say they see their whole ny hood out there, especially brothers from brooklyn and queens.

and they say, they could NEVER come back to new york... they cant believe how they tolerated the cold, and the crowds...

their whole loyalty is with the ATL....
now...

If you are using slang and an accent in your songs and you don't talk that way in day to day life, you are corny, and trying to jump on a bandwagon. No matter where you are from.
