You viewing it with a narrow scope. If you were to view it as if you were coaching it changes the dynamics considerably. The criticism of Westbrook is warranted. It really is simply basketball X's and O's. View the rest I am about to say as a coachWhen it's convenient....
In the NBA a team averages about 96 possessions per game. So keep that number in mind when we explore Westbrook stats.
Westbrook recently had 31 pts but took 30 shot attempts, and 9 assist. If you were a coach what is a glaring problem? It would be Westbrook's usage rate. With the team only having 93 possession that game, when you add up his shot attempts and assist he had the ball for almost 43% of his teams possessions. When you include the assist that did not score that number is probably very close to 50%.
Now when you add Durants 25 shots and his 7 assist, the usage rate for two players is damn near 80% So what is the rest of the team doing when they are only included in less than 20% of the possessions?
That number needs to come down. A good coach would make Westbrook play more off the ball to allow other players to contribute more. There is nothing wrong with Westbrook's game other than his usage rate. Playing more off the ball would solve that issue.
Curry for example does not dominate the ball and he plays off the ball routinely which allows others to get a rhythm instead of always scoring off assist which in most cases are catch and shoot.
