Only three days remain until Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, and the early reviews are now beginning to emerge. Unfortunately for those who can’t wait to hit a midnight screening, the critical take on the big superhero title fight so far is — to put it mildly — not very positive. As of this writing, BVS sits at a relatively paltry 41% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with only 16 positive reviews out of a total of 39. While that number will likely go up or down somewhat, as more and more reviews ultimately pour in, it would be an understatement to say that BVS was not widely expected to perform this poorly with critics.

What’s worse is that the negative reviews for Batman V Superman are less of the “this is underwhelming, but has potential” variety and more of along the lines of “give me the past two-and-a-half hours of my life back.”

Some reviewers chose to lambast the film, while others sought to keep their condemnations more succinct, but most were still generally negative. In fact, two popular lines of criticism thus far are that BVS overuses CGI spectacle and is just too dark and dour for its own good.

Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne in Batman V Superman

Below, you can read a rundown of what several critics thought of the film:

Time Out New York — Joshua Rothkopf

advertising
“If there’s any justice, dawning or otherwise, at the multiplex, audiences will reject Zack Snyder’s lumbering, dead-on-arrival superhero mélange, a $250 million tombstone for a genre in dire need of a break.”

Miami Herald — Rene Rodriguez

“In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel duke it out and the audience loses.”

The New York Post — Lou Lumenick

“Constantly threatening to collapse from self-seriousness, this epic has way too much of everything, including CGI and Oscar winners up the wazoo.”

The Wrap — Alonso Duralde

“And what of the title’s promised skirmish? That face-off between two comics legends becomes but one in a series of big things bashing into other big things, which is what Snyder and writers Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer mistake for storytelling.”

Entertainment WeeklyChris Nashawaty

“It’s another numbing smash-and-bash orgy of CGI mayhem with an ending that leaves the door open wide enough to justify the next 10 installments. Is it too late to demand a rematch?”

GQ Magazine — Helen O’Hara

“This is a film so bad it wears you down and makes you wonder if there was ever such a thing as a hero anyway”

Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel in Batman V Superman

Many of these criticisms mirror lines of attack launched at Zack Snyder’s previous effort, Man of Steel, and are not too surprising, all in all. If one disliked Snyder’s first attempt at a film starring Superman, it makes sense that his follow-up might strike out with that same moviegoer for similar reasons.

advertising
Of course, the response to BVS isn’t all bad, as there a decent number of positive reviews coming in as well:

Associated Press — Jake Coyle

“It hurtles not with the kinetic momentum of Mad Max: Fury Road nor the comparatively spry skip of a Marvel movie, but with an operatic grandeur it sometimes earns and often doesn’t.”

USA Today — Brian Truitt

“BvS will please those either waiting for the two main players to lock horns on a movie screen, or those who’ve just been pining for Wonder Woman forever.”

Empire Magazine — Nick De Semlyen

“There are moments that make the whole enterprise worthwhile, and introduces an intriguing new Batman. But it’s also cluttered and narratively wonky; a few jokes wouldn’t have gone amiss, either.”

As you can see, even most of the positive appraisals tend to stress that the film isn’t perfect. Some seek to hold BVS up as a crowd-pleasing spectacle, but don’t really seem to offer many compliments to the actual story being told by Snyder and company, much less the characterizations of either Batman and Superman.

At the end of the day, whatever the final judgments made by critics, Batman V Superman will still likely be a financial success for DC and Warner Bros. Hardcore fans of the two superheroic titans are unlikely to be deterred from seeing their two idols duke it out on-screen, and the marketing blitz over the last several months has succeeded in making even casual comic movie fans look forward to witnessing the Dawn of Justice. The real question will be BVS’ staying power, or lack thereof. Making lots of money in the short term is great, but if overall public opinion ends up siding against the film, it may bode ominously for the future of DC’s cinematic universe.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25th, 2016, followed by Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016;Wonder Woman on June 23rd, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17th, 2017; The Flash on March 16th, 2018; Aquaman on July 27th, 2018; Shazam on April 5th, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14th, 2019; Cyborgon April 3rd, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps. on June 19th, 2020.

I wanna see it but the reason I've been 'boycotting" movies is I don't wanna risk of siting in a theater bored for 2 hours sometimes 3...was planning on catching an early show on mon. but I think I'll stay out of these threads and just wait for it to hit the net

Review: “Batman vs. Superman” Is the Marvel Killing Mega Hit DC Comics Fans Wanted

There are more Easter eggs in “Batman vs. Superman” than on the front lawn of the White House. Zack Snyder’s ultimate DC Comics movie is also the Marvel killing mega fans have longed for. After years and years of free standing “Batman” or “Superman” movies, the two super heroes finally meet, meet each other’s companions, duke it out, and come up winners.

The good news– it’s all good news– is that Ben Affleck is damn good as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Henry Cavill has improved tremendously as Superman/Clark Kent, and Gal Gadot is a welcome addition as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Jesse Eisenberg is a phenomenal Lex Luthor. Jeremy Irons is a fun Alfred. This little ensemble plays well together, with a humorous pay off line toward the end of the film. (I don’t want to ruin it.)

Did I like this movie? I used to buy these comic books for 12 cents at Dubrow’s in Woodmere, Long Island. I had stacks of them. I never thought they’d amount to much beyond pre-teen entertainment. But I do think this movie is kind of my pay-off for years of devotion. It’s cool to see Lex Luthor introduce Clark Kent to Bruce Wayne. You can’t beat it.

Some of the story is a little convoluted, but that’s okay. Luthor pits the two “red capes” against each other and you’re not quite sure why they take the bait. But Gotham City and Metropolis are exploding, there’s a lot of fear and loathing, and someone has to save Lois Lane (the better than ever Amy Adams) from her latest exploits.

And what a coincidence: Bruce and Clark have something in common. Each of them had mothers named Martha. It is a total coincidence in comic book history. But screenwriters David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio seized on this, among other things, as a nod to fans. They will approve.

We do get mini versions of the Batman and Superman backstories, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 80 years. They’re handled economically, thank god, because how many times can you see Bruce Wayne’s parents die? Snyder plants two eggs– look for them– in that context. You’ll see a movie poster for “Zorro”– the inspiration for Batman long ago, and a movie marquee for “Excalibur.” You see, in the updated story, the Waynes only died in 1981. “Excalibur,” released that year, about King Arthur’s court, is supposed to show the transition “from despair to glory,” the movie’s set designer tells me. “Zack really liked it.”

These aren’t spoilers because you can find it all on the IMDB and other places: there are tons of cameos– from a bunch of broadcasters including Charlie Rose and Anderson Cooper- to a lot of other DC heroes. Ezra Miller’s “The Flash” — who hasn’t been on screen yet– is shown, as is Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. “BvS” you see is the beginning of a long launch of DC movies a la Marvel. (I’m thriller since I am sick of “X Men” and can’t listen to Peter Parker’s whiny history once more.)

There are also nods to Robin (where is he?), and Clark’s dead father Jonathan Kent, plus a nice little plot for Ma Kent (Diane Lane, who looks way too young and gorgeous to play that part). Lawrence Fishburne is a terrific Perry White in the age of newspapers dying, and Harry Lennix is back from “Man of Steel.” So is Michael Shannon, stiffly.

Basically, “BvS” is a far better movie than Snyder and Cavill’s “Man of Steel.” I can only assume this has a lot to do with Chris Terrio, who wrote “Argo” and seems to have sharpened the character development. In “MoS” I yawned through Superman’s endless fights with General Zod. It was just repetitive. Here, there’s a movie to latch onto. And I think fans will go back and back to look for more surprises. Very entertaining.

Directed by Zack Snyder so you what you are getting, he's no Christopher Nolan! That is who should of directed it. Snyder movies always look fake or just way too much CGI. He'll film an outdoor scene with CGI. :smh:

That being said I'll probably check it out anyway.

The many reviews I've read said Wonder Woman's intro was THE best thing in the movie, and the only reason to see it. Keep in mind, these were fans that got to see it early, so take it for what it's worth.

I would put snyders catalog against nolans any day.

Man at this point it could be three hours of Batman and Superman playing Uno and it would still do $200Ms this weekend.

Negative criticism doesn't mean anything without a corresponding consumer response. Kids will pack out this movie heavily, which is interesting given the obvious dark and moribund tone of this flick.

I'll say it again, Marvel movies are just more enjoyable. Its a super hero movie, it shouldn't take itself so seriously.

This shit is exactly like all the 'online hate' for Tom Clancy's Division video game.

These past 2 weeks.... certain folks been shitting on it left, right & center.... in every comment section... in every video review. :smh:

Meanwhile the game breaks MULTIPLE sales records in just a week.:cool:

And all the folks here on BGOL who played it for themselves... seemed to really enjoy it.

I'm gonna see this BvS movie for myself... because I have a strong feeling that the folks who are shitting on it truly have their own 'agenda'. :hmm: (Just like the critics of the Division) and the 'final product' is not nearly as bad as they claim it is.

Haven't we basically seen the movie already with all the trailers released? It ain't gonna get much better. And then there is this:

NEjO9AM.jpg

Man WW supposed to at least have tiddies. This shapeless chick was all they could find? I know with CGI and the suit they'll make her look at lot hotter but please, this movie seems second-rate all around. Second-rate stars, second-rate director, second-rate writers...

Was Ultron a terrible film?
It could have been a great film, but for some reason they decided that it was a good think to try to create on screen something that would look cool in the comics, that is producing a million robots all at once attacking the Avengers...
What wound up happening was some shit that look strait out the pages of a power ranger show where they were beating up these robots like a Anteater going through a colony of ants..
I guess they went to the well one two many time, only because they were able to pull it off during the first Avenger movie, but word to the wise, for now on please stop making movies with the hero's fighting a million balloon villains and subject the audience to watching them pop each one with a pin.... They would be better off having them fight ten solid robots who could actually put up a decant fight...

Yeah they went from vague nothing to giving the whole thing away.

With the latest trailer with batman talking to supes about what it is to be a man, that kinda proves it's gonna be some artsy critique. Problem with that will be same as MOS, people expecting the batman /superman they grew up with but have to waddle through this nouveau bullshit wrapped around a bad plot.

I'll be there tomorrow looking forward to being humored more than entertained.

Money shouldn't be the determining factor of a movie being good or not. Many people felt Man of Steel was a boring yet it made over $650 million worldwide.

The fan interest for this is super high seeing as how fans are going to see potentially Clark & Bruce go at it (we don't know yet. it could be all talk and no punch) . Kids and adults are going to flood the theaters. It's going to make money.

The question is will people walk out of the theaters wanting more of will they just be satisfied with what they were shown?

Jay, no offense, fam, but this may be the most ridiculous thing ever uttered on BGOL. And we are talking about a long history of posters saying dumb shit.

Nolan:
  • Memento
  • Insomnia
  • Batman Begins
  • Prestige
  • Dark Knight
  • Inception
  • Dark Knight Rises
  • Interstellar
Synder:
  • Dawn of the Dead
  • 300
  • Watchmen
  • Legends of the Guardian
  • Sucker Punch
  • Man of Steel
  • Batman v Superman

Visually, 300 shits on anything on that list alone.

Visually, sure. But that point is a tacit admission that Synder isn't even close to the same weight class as Nolan.

See, that's Synder's problem. He is just a visual director now. Dawn of the Dead was good, but now he gets major Hollywood money, his stories suck. His two best films were his first. After that… And have you seen Sucker Punch? That shit was dreadful.

Memento. Insomnia. The Prestige. Shit, those three alone shit on most of Synder's career.
