Sony buys Michael Jackson's stake in music unit for $750 million

I don' tknow what that's worth but I know when it comes to the music industry if I can make 750 million i'd sell the shit. They wasn't doing nothing with it. It would be different if someone with business sense was running it. But shit they wasn't licensing none of the music so i'm not sure what is was really worth to them. Sony seems to have gotten a nice deal.

That catalog brought in over 100M a year in revenue

why do you guys give a shit?

Was there some plan by MJ to pay for your kids college or something?

Or buy NBC and make it all Black like Bil COsby was allegedly gonna do?

Put it all in the UNCF?

MJ's money is MJ's money, and his family.

All this speculation about what it was allegedly worth, and here it is today, sold for what it must be... worth.

And none of us wouldve gotten a penny of it anyway.

Mike had loans against his share of the catalog years before he died. His estate still makes out like a bandit and in end he only paid 47 million in the first place. His own music plus the 25% stake he still has in the company should keep his " Children" and their kids in Suntan Lotion and denial for years to come.
bullshit - those loans were satisfied withing 18 months of his death

lol why think they paid that much in the first place? this is how you build wealth.

"The Jackson estate also owns half of Sony/ATV, which has been valued at about $1.6 billion, which means Jackson’s portion is worth about $800 million. "

They got 750 million......seems to be decent value.

Yea.....
Im sure the Jackson family already got broke off from mj's PLANNED death.

$750 is a nice check....
But still......
If they wanted to build something major...like long lasting family wealth......like the Jews, Asians etc....then they shouldve held on to most of MJ's shit. They couldve hustled off his name for the next 30+ years. Yet theyre selling away everything looking or a quick come up.

wrong numbers... they making it sound good - it was valued at over 2 billion 3 years ago with Jackson's portion valued over $1 billion before they added 2.2 billion in value to the catalog through acquiring EMI.

That value has been disputed though. For something spinning off that kind of cash, that's a low valuation.. cash flow + the intrinsic value of the property.

I'm just pointing out that just holding on to it brought in income of 100M a year so not like they "needed to sell it". You could get the cash value in 5 years + still own the cash flow + the value of the property. Sony got over.

yup. this is how the wealthy stay wealthy

Somebody better check on Dick Gregory.

Sony is still trying to figure out how to keep up with iTunes and Youtube. Ever since that's been a thing they haven't really made the money to give the Jacksons a billion for any catalog - in our hearts J thru S on that list is worth a few billion, reality says nobody is going back to buy that music over and over again. The residual income has been bootlegged out of the music industry.

Whats the problem??

"John Branca and John McClain, the coexecutors of the Jackson estate, added that the deal “further allows us to continue our efforts of maximizing the value of Michael’s estate for the benefit of his children.”

The payment to the Jackson estate represents the value of its share of Sony/ATV after the debt on the company. According to the announcement, Sony will pay the Jackson estate a lump sum of $733 million, with the rest accounted for in payments previously committed to by Sony.

The parties said they expected a definitive agreement by the end of March, and that the deal was subject to regulatory approval.

The Jackson estate still has significant holdings in music. It was a minority investor in the EMI publishing deal, and still holds its interest in that catalog. It also has complete ownership of Jackson’s songs and recordings, as well as other publishing holdings that Jackson acquired in his lifetime, including songs by Sly Stone and early rock ’n’ roll classics made famous by Ray Charles and Elvis Presley.

And in another benefit for the Jackson side, once the deal is closed, the estate will be debt-free and hold hundreds of millions in cash."

Old Dg about to tell you all he and his momma were out with huh what who DG voice were with Michael last night.

Ok so is it a good deal or a bad deal?
When Michael died. he left his family with a great deal of debt. That debt will now be paid off and the family (his kids and their kids kids.....) will continue to build wealth with their other assets Michael left behind.

"The $750 million sale of Jackson's half of Sony/ATV Music will go in part to finish paying off the massive $500 million debt
the singer had accrued at the time of his death in 2009. After taxes, fees and expenses, the remaining money will be put into a trust for Jackson's three children."

According to that report, the singer's estate has rung up more than $1 billion, pre-tax, to date. With the Sony deal, the estate's executors -- attorney John Branca and music exec John McClain -- have pulled off what a source close to the estate called a "$1 billion turnaround," from $500 million of debt to $500 million in cash.

its a snow job... no way Billboard is accurate on this, these are the same numbers Forbes was reporting back in 2011 and 2012... when the estate had brought in $1.5 billion from sales merch and publishing
the valuation of the catalog is bullshit when you consider the valuation before the $2.2 billion EMI acquisition

look at the old reports from since 2010 I've been posting in this thread...

Nah, none of that. But they will always be known as MJ's kids. People in general. You know heads give certain white people the "pass".

So is Rollingstone wrong also? How about the person running his estate?

maybe so, cause as I said before - the current reports are contrary to the previous reports, including a public sale that needed to pass federal regulatory evaluation before being finalized...

not the first time a narrative was pushed to cover corporate larceny
