Zoe Saldana’s ‘Nina’ Gets First Poster, More Online Backlash

Zoe Saldana‘s casting as Nina Simone in “Nina” is once again causing outrage, after the official poster for the film was released Tuesday.

Fans took to Twitter to point out that Saldana looks nothing like Simone, the legendary African-American singer-songwriter and civil rights activist whose struggles to balance music, family and what she believed in left her living alone in France, feeling exiled from her own country.

“Zoe Saldana looks nothing like Nina Simone #FAIL not even close,” tweeted one user. “Why not just Will Smith to do it?”

“That Zoe Saldana pic as Nina Simone looks like the blackface of a bad Halloween or frat party,” another user wrote.

Some even compared the bad casting to that of Joseph Fiennes being hired to play Michael Jackson in a British television special, which also caused outrage back in January. Other Twitter users also suggested actresses who would’ve been a better fit for the role, which includeLupita Nyong’o and Viola Davis.

In 2012, rumors circulated that Saldana would play Simone, and the response was overwhelmingly negative, with fans saying that Saldana was too light-skinned to portray the singer. In 2014, an image was released in which Saldana’s nose had been altered with a prosthetic. Many took to Twitter to suggest that Saldana’s casting was a form of blackface.

“Nina” hits theaters on April 22, also stars David Oyelowo and is written and directed by Cynthia Mort.

You could post a photo of Nina Simone along with other randomly selected Black female singers from the 60s and a majority of the "protesters" couldn't pick her out

Miserable ass people sit around all day waiting for some shit to be pissed off about. People get bad about movie casting and go see the muthafucka anyway JUST so they can shit on how bad they felt it was even though they had their mind made up of how bad it was anyway.

I don't understand the outcry. I can see if it was a CAC. But its Nina Simone's story. Hopefully it does it justice but Zoe Saldana sure isn't enough reason for me not to want to see it.

Same people crying on twitter doesn't even know who she is or what she even looked like.

It has everything to do with her not being a good enough actress to play this role more than anything else.
Has everything to do with the casting director and hollywood and not her directly though she ain't shit.
 
I don't want the film to fail.
I feel that Nina Simone's story deserves to be told (successfully).
I also understand the controversy over casting Zoe Saldana in the role, but I still want it to succeed.
Sure; Zoe Saldana is Dominican. But she's also a Black woman as well. One doesn't negate the other. I'm willing to give it a chance. :dunno:

What's wrong with her acting? I mean i'm not her biggest fan I can only think of a handful of shit she's been in but she seems to be about on par with what the rest of actresses out there are doing. She at least had a decent enough name to get people to go see in her movie. But just like how they did Zendaya on that Aaliyah movie, they've torn the movie down so bad that its going to flop and its not going to do Simone's legacy any justice. At the end of the day that's what its all about.

Whether she acknowledges herself as black or not I don't know. I never heard that but I can believe it. I think shes' the one that dates nothing but cac's if i'm not mistaken.

But no matter what she is a women of color whether she wants to admit it or not and all the films i've seen are black movies and have been black roles so she can't escape it.

Nah fam, she ain't on par, she looks right. That's just what it is lol its the reality of the situation.

And whether she wants to admit it or not means a whole hell of a lot too can't dismiss that lol. That counts. but id rather they got someone who didn't look like nina simone who had the acting chops to pull it off than someone who doesn't look like her, doesn't have the acting chops and is given prosthetic and black face to compensate for it
