Dos Anjos-McGregor, Holm-Tate Title Bouts Set for UFC 197 in Las Vegas
UFC 197 is shaping up to be an event to remember.
Multiple outlets are reporting that the March pay-per-view event will feature a pair of blockbuster title bouts, as Rafael dos Anjos will defend the lightweight strap against Conor McGregor, while Holly Holm will face Miesha Tate for bantamweight gold. UFC 197 is expected to take place in Las Vegas on March 5 after originally being announced for Rio de Janeiro. Bleacher Report on Thursday first brought word of the card, although the UFC has yet to confirm the bookings.
After capturing the lightweight strap with a lopsided five-round verdict over Anthony Pettis at UFC 185, dos Anjos made his first defense in emphatic fashion, as he stopped Donald Cerrone in just 66 seconds in the UFC on Fox 17 headliner on Dec. 19. The Kings MMA product has won 10 of his last 11 bouts in the Octagon.
McGregor capped off a memorable 2015 at UFC 194 with a 13-second knockout of reigning featherweight king Jose Aldo. The “Notorious” Irishman, who is arguably the Las Vegas-based promotion’s fastest rising star, expressed a desire to become a two-division champion following his win over Aldo while adding that he has no plans to vacate the 145-pound belt.
Holm pulled off a shocking upset at UFC 193 when she scored a technical knockout triumph over Ronda Rousey 59 seconds into round two of their headlining clash in Melbourne on Nov. 14. The Jackson-Wink MMA member was initially expected to defend the belt in a rematch with Rousey, but UFC President Dana White on Wednesday revealed that Holm would fight a different opponent before facing Rousey again.
Tate, who came up short in her first bid for the bantamweight strap against Rousey at UFC 168, has won four straight fights since that defeat. Most recently, “Cupcake” took a unanimous decision triumph over Jessica Eye at UFC on Fox 16 in July.

Fabricio Werdum Joins Cain Velasquez, Pulls out of UFC's Super Bowl Fight Card
When it rains, it pours for the UFC.
Less than 24 hours after UFC President Dana White announcedheavyweight top contender Cain Velasquez was pulling out of the UFC 196 main event due to a back injury, MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz revealed heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is joining him.
"I was already injured," Werdum told the Brazilian media (h/t MMA Fighting's Cruz). "I have a foot injury, and haven’t been able to throw kicks in training for two weeks. I would still fight Cain because I was injured the last time, but I also hurt my back last Friday. I went to the doctor, tried to continue training, but couldn’t spar as I should spar."
Just two weeks removed from the event, the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend card now lacks a proper main event, and it's unclear if that can be remedied.
Most of the UFC's other champions are indisposed at the moment, with Conor McGregor and Holly Holm both booked for UFC 197, Dominick Cruz still recovering from his win over TJ Dillashaw two weeks ago and other champions such as Luke Rockhold and Daniel Cormier likely unable to make weight in time for the event. While the UFC is still looking for a way to keep Werdum on the card, per Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, it feels unlikely things will change.
The card's co-main event, Johny Hendricks vs. Stephen Thompson, lacks the star power to assume top billing, and none of the other fights on the card features current contenders.
Making matters more complicated, in the hours between Velasquez's withdrawal and Werdum's, the UFC had announced hard-hitting Cleveland native Stipe Miocic was the new heavyweight title challenger. It is not yet known if the UFC intends to pull him from the card, leave him in the main event spot or simply call mulligan on his contender status.
The UFC is undoubtedly scrambling to come up with a makeshift solution, but it's unclear if it'll be able to sort everything out in time.

After losing a headlining heavyweight title fight earlier this week, the event now instead will air on FOX Sports 1. Yahoo! Sports first reported the plans, citing UFC President Dana White.
UFC 196 takes place Feb. 6 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. Following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, the remainder of the card is now slated for FOX Sports 1.
Initially, the main card was expected to air on PPV with its $50-$60 price tag. Instead, it’s now free for anyone who has a cable or streaming package that includes FOX Sports 1.
On Monday, former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (13-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) pulled out of his rematch with current titleholder Fabricio Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC). Stipe Miocic (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) then stepped in as a replacement, but citing foot and back injuries, Werdum then also pulled out of the event.
A few folks, including ex-light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (21-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC), had offered to step in as part of a long-shot scenario.
Instead, the planned co-headliner between former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) and fellow contender Stephen Thompson (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) will take the top spot on the card. Hendricks actually pitched such a scenario earlier today.

Lightweight and Team Alpha Male veteran Danny Castillo and welterweight Mike Pierce are among 11 fighters who have been released from the UFC.
That's according to a Friday report from Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting. Though Castillo (17-10) and Pierce (17-7) are both known and respected by the MMA community, both have fallen on bad fortune in recent years, losing their last six bouts combined and missing significant time with injury.
Based on record, "Last Call" Castillo has the worst of it, dropping four straight in the UFC since August 2014. Three of the losses, however, came by split decision, which may help explain why the UFC kept Castillo, a durable lightweight with a wrestling background and a tendency toward grinding, after he lost his third in a row—the unofficial threshold at which the UFC often cuts competitors.
Pierce has several solid wins on his own resume, over welterweights like Seth Baczynski, Aaron Simpson and Paul Bradley (twice). In recent memory, though, Pierce is probably better known for a loss.
Under the World Series of Fighting banner, a certain welterweight named Rousimar Palhares submitted Pierce with a heel hook, but not before Pierce sustained knee and ankle injuries. Pierce didn't fight again for more than two years.
In any case, the 35-year-old Pierce got a chance in the UFC upon returning from the injury, but he dropped a decision in December to Ryan LaFlare.
The other nine fighters reportedly released are Marcio Alexandre, Akbarh Arreola, Konstantin Erokhin, Hayder Hassan, Steven Kennedy, Leo Kuntz, Valmir Lazaro, Steve Montgomery and MarcinWrzosek.

With a masterful title win over a seemingly unstoppable champ, Holly Holm cleaned up at the 8th Annual World MMA Awards.
Friday’s black-tie ceremony, which took place at The Venetian in Las Vegas, recognized achievements from the 2015 calendar year. Fighters Only, which organizes the annual industry awards, presented finalists in five categories, and after a month of fan voting, winners were revealed at the ceremony.
Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) emerged victorious in multiple categories. The UFC women’s bantamweight champion, who dominated longtime titleholder Ronda Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in this past November’s UFC 193 headliner, picked up awards for Female Fighter of the Year, Breakthrough Fighter of the Year, Knockout of the Year and Upset of the Year. Her camp, Jackson-Wink MMA, also picked up Gym of the Year honors.
She wasn’t the only multiple-category winner, though. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC), who dethroned longtime champ Jose Aldo (25-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) this past December at UFC 194, won the Charles “Mask” Lewis Fighter of the Year award, as well as International Fighter of the Year.

Rafael dos Anjos injured, out of UFC 196 main event fight against Conor McGregor
Rafael dos Anjos has been forced to withdraw from next week's highly-anticipated UFC 196 main event fight against Conor McGregor.
According to multiple sources, dos Anjos suffered a broken left foot last Friday, forcing him to pull out of the lightweight title fight against McGregor. The Brazilian was hoping the injury would get better over the weekend but when it didn't his team had to make the call to cancel the fight on Monday.
The UFC is currently working on finding a replacement to fight McGregor on less than two weeks' notice, however, nothing has been finalized at this time.
It's déjà vu all over again for McGregor. Last summer, then-featherweight championJose Aldo withdrew from his fight against the Irishman just eleven days before UFC 189. Of course, back then, the UFC adjusted quickly and booked Chad Mendes to fight McGregor and the event went off without a hitch. Furthermore, this marks the fourth time in McGregor's eight UFC fights that his original opponent was forced to pull out of their fight.
McGregor, the current featherweight champion, was on the verge of history, as he was hoping to become the first fighter in the promotion's history to hold two belts at the same.
According to dos Anjos' coach Rafael Cordeiro, RDA won't need surgery on his injured foot at this time, however, he can't put any pressure on it for at least three weeks.
"I am devastated," he said, "because we were preparing well for this fight and we were ready."
Thus far, members of Team Donald Cerrone and Team Anthony Pettis, including Pettis himself, have openly campaigned for the fight. Nate Diaz and Frankie Edgar have also been considered, however, Edgar is currently injured.

Perennial lightweight contender Nate Diaz had plenty of words for UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor after his win over Michael Johnson in December. Now on Saturday, March 5, the Stockton native will get to fight "The Notorious" one in the five-round main event of UFC 196 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The main event change came about on Tuesday, when McGregor's original opponent, UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, was forced out of the bout due to injury. Diaz agreed to step in for the bout against Dublin's McGregor, with the fight taking place at 170 pounds.
In the UFC 196 co-main event, women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm defends her title for the first time against Miesha Tate. Tickets are on sale now.
McGregor has been calling his shots in the UFC since his debut in the promotion in 2013, and the man dubbed by many as “Mystic Mac” has been on target with his Ali-esque predictions. Sailing to the top of the featherweight division in the space of seven fights, the 27-year-old capped off his rise with 2015 knockouts of Dennis Siver and Chad Mendes, and a stunning 13-second finish of Jose Aldo. The 145-pound champion was seeking more gold at 155 pounds, but with Dos Anjos' injury, that fight will have to wait. Instead, McGregor gets to settle a score with Diaz.

The main event change came about on Tuesday, when McGregor's original opponent, UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, was forced out of the bout due to injury. Diaz agreed to step in for the bout against Dublin's McGregor, with the fight taking place at 170 pounds.

McGregor has been calling his shots in the UFC since his debut in the promotion in 2013, and the man dubbed by many as “Mystic Mac” has been on target with his Ali-esque predictions. Sailing to the top of the featherweight division in the space of seven fights, the 27-year-old capped off his rise with 2015 knockouts of Dennis Siver and Chad Mendes, and a stunning 13-second finish of Jose Aldo. The 145-pound champion was seeking more gold at 155 pounds, but with Dos Anjos' injury, that fight will have to wait. Instead, McGregor gets to settle a score with Diaz.
A former Ultimate Fighter winner who has been a member of the UFC roster since 2007, 30-year-old Nate Diaz has been thrilling fans at 155 and 170 pounds for years, with victories over Donald Cerrone, Takanori Gomi and Jim Miller, among others. Winner of two of his last three, Diaz knocked out Gray Maynard and decisioned "The Menace" Johnson to soar up to the number six spot in the lightweight rankings, and with a win over McGregor, he could put himself in the mix for a rematch against Dos Anjos.

Mark Hunt continued his knockout-heavy assault on the heavyweight division of UFC when he tangled with Frank Mir in the UFC Fight Night 85 main event last night (Sat., March 19, 2016) inside Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia.
"Super Samoan" was coming off of a first-round knockout of Antonio Silva back at UFC 193 in November and he was keen on adding to his finishing total "down under."
The pair dangerous finishers traded shots at a distance, with leg kicks sandwiched in between jabs and hooks. Mir attempted a level change a few times early in round one, but he telegraphed his efforts to get this fight to the mat.
All Hunt needed was one opening and he found one just as Mir ducked. The New Zealander caught him right behind the ear for the walk-off knockout, something he's grown accustomed to.
That's two straight knockouts for Hunt and subsequently two straight losses for Mir.
Frank look out of shape like a mother fucker. How You let mark hunt come in the ring looking in better shape than you. Hunt never looked in better shape than anyone he ever faught.

He looked like he had a two day training camp. they should really make heavyweights - 245Lbs limit and have the pudgies go off to Bellator - yeah Rpoy nelson would still be fight but you would see guess have to do more than sweat away lbs to get to barely 265 in the Heavyweight division and have to work out harder to make 245 lbs - also guys like Jon Jones and Chris Weidman would move up to Heavyweight and add more athleticism to the division - the 20lbs between 245 and 265 is a huge difference - the 265lbs are hydrating back to 275 and 280 weigh to big for 220ers
