Watch Preview: Kids of Rev. Run, Damon Dash, Master P, El DeBarge & Pepa Are 'Growing Up Hip Hop'

WE tv has ordered the six-episode "docu-series" “Growing Up Hip Hop” from Entertainment One (eOne), scheduled for a late 2015 premiere. The series follows the next generation of "hip hop royalty" as they attempt to step outside the shadow of their famous families.

The offspring of old-schoolers like Rev. Run, Russell Simmons, Damon Dash, Master P, El DeBarge and Pepa (of Salt & Pepa fame) will try to build their own life and fortune in careers ranging from music to acting and fashion, while being challenged, at every turn, with maintaining their own identity as they evolve the hip-hop culture they come from.

Via press release, they are:

- Romeo Miller (formerly known as Lil’ Romeo) and the son of Master P. He’s on track to take over the music empire his father built, but is that really his path or will he veer off course? He consistently leans on close friend Angela for guidance and support;

- Angela Simmons, the daughter of rap pioneer Rev. Run and niece of Russell Simmons, is a hip hop socialite, model and fashion designer of her own line, Foofi. Angela is a social media powerhouse who’s hoping to translate her fashion success into dollars away from the comfort of her father’s fortunes;

- Damon “Boogie” Dash is the namesake of his father, Roc-A-Fella co-founder and media mogul, Damon Dash. Like father like son, “Boogie” is also an entrepreneur having co-founded Chipz Cookies as well as a record label and NYC art gallery;

- Kristinia DeBarge is the daughter of James DeBarge from the legendary yet troubled group DeBarge, and a singer/songwriter in her own right. With her father currently in prison, Kristinia leans on her uncle, hip hop legend El DeBarge, as she struggles to choose between family and fame, all while considered the outsider of this tight-knit group;

- Egypt Criss, the daughter of Sandra “Pepa” Denton from Salt-N-Pepa and rap icon Treach from Naughty By Nature, is actively pursuing a solo music career. Her overprotective mother, however, has yet to bless her career choice based on her own experiences in the hip hop industry which she helped establish;

- TJ Mizell, the son of the late Run D.M.C. DJ, Jam Master Jay, has stepped into his father’s shoes as a DJ, spinning at the hottest events and venues around the world, yet always on his mind is his father’s mysterious and still unsolved murder.

“Hip hop is a hugely popular music genre, but beyond the songs it has become a lifestyle and has influenced a generation of young people,” said Marc Juris, WE tv’s president. “‘Growing Up Hip Hop’ profiles what it’s like to be raised by hip hop legends, living in their shadow while trying to balance success and independence. This series will be right at home in our growing line-up focused on the authenticity and the challenges of real people and real relationships, and we can’t wait to share these distinctive original stories with WE tv viewers.”

“Growing Up Hip Hop” is executive produced by John Morayniss and Tara Long for eOne along with Romeo Miller, Angela Simmons, Percy Robert Miller (Master P) and Datari Turner. Turner’s Datari Turner Productions is co-producing the series. Lauren Gellert, executive vice president, development and original programming, Suzanne Murch, vice president, original programming, and Mark Powell are the executive producers for WE tv.

A first preview has been released by WE tv and is embedded below:

Children of millionaires can never have the same success as their parents i feel. They thing that builds people is drive. Determination. You not gonna be hungry to make it if you've never had hunger. You've never had to do anything on your own. These kids have never had anything pressing them down. They didn't have to sell crack anywhere. They don't have drive to get up out the situation they're in.

How you gonna want for shit when you've never had real want?

When i was my young kids age i was stealing soup out the Shell's supermarket. Trying to steal bread out of Publix. Struggle builds character. My kids don't know what that is to feed themselves. Feed their siblings. They have no idea what it's like to not even know where their mother or father is going to come home that day and if they do will they have food. That's a different kind of WANT that builds a person i think.

It's your Opinion but that may only be true in hiphop.

Yeah probably. Can you think of anyone?

What does Angella Simmons do besides post instagram pics? So none of these kids wants to be Doctors, lawyers, hedgefund tycoons? Do any of them even have a college degree? Not a fan of trump but as rich as he is he made sure all his kids went to ivy league school and all of them are doing good running their own part of the family business.

I don't know. All i know is she get the shoes and clothing line. But even that...they got the money from uncle and daddy.

I'm thinking you totally didn't understand what i'm saying.
Bill Gates grew up a rich kid, and he still made waaaay more money than his pops
the families I listed all had 2nd and 3rd generations in the 20th century that drastically increased or built on the wealth they born into
Shit- Mark Zuckerburg grew up real comfortable, compared to my middle class upbringing he was rich

Donald Trump disputes your opinion.

They all came from privilege and used that privilege to gain what they have. I just cannot see that as the same.

Misleading title dumb fuck

Dash is STILL his OWN boss stupid

Well actually he never said Dash wasnt a boss, he put it in quotes, and just stated he got a new job...

and technically if its NOT his reality show, and IF he is getting paid and NOT just doing it for exposure...

somebody else is signing his checks and therefore he would be working for someone..

It seems like you have your own definition of the word "success".

She's talking about the drive and passion to succeed like their parents had.
She said it's a different kind of success because it is.
The kid who had it and got to fuck up a trillion times and lean on parents and family money and not even really worry if it failed cause there is a safety net lived in a different world than the kid who is the only one doing something and the entire future of their family depends on them
that's 2 different kinds of lives and character building that takes place.

I'm happy to see black kids in these positions though. I'm happy that the black kids in these positions aren't acting like the white ones that have a job at the company waiting and are out there trying to "get it" the best way they can.

It's like when these white dudes who have this tech success say they came out to the bay area with nothing and gambled it all and then succeeded, leaving out the part where their parents footed all of the bills until it did pay off.
That's different than a Kanye west in a uhaul truck without a dollar to his name and no promise of nothing turning that into what he has today.

I don't know who the basketball guy is. But NONE of these other people are the successes their parents are. lol like these people are GAME changers. Except for Lenny and Lisa.
:lol:
you are kinda right - the basketball dude is Steph Curry and he is more successful than his pops and if he stay healthy will be in the Hall of Fame too- better example would be JellyBean vs Kobe
Archie vs Peyton & Eli Manning

Kate Hudson has earned more money than Goldie Hawn did

Maybe I misinterpreted your post. It seemed like you were saying that privileged kids automatically lack the same drive/toughness that fueled their self-made, millionaire parents because they've never faced real adversity. Environment plays a role, but it's hardly the sole deciding factor.

Rashida Jones will never win 27 Grammys or be nominated for 79 like Quincy, but neither will most people. Talent is heritable, but as far as I know, there's no game-changing/greatness gene. All the people I posted, were able to have successful careers in ultra-competitive fields where rejection is a way of life and probably faced tougher scrutiny because of their famous parents. Everybody's different...
