MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

Checked out A Walk in the Woods the other day. Enjoyed it. Predictable & slapstick-e at times, but always good to see Nolte & Redford on camera.

Funny seeing the 2 of them side-by-side too as you see how much better one has aged compared with the other. At this point ... Redford's 79, and Nolte's 75.

Highlight(s) of the film were the overhead / drone shots ... pretty spectacular. Not the best reviewed/received film. C+ though. Would have worked better with younger actors, less comedy hijinx, and more of a focus on the reconnection of a long-lost friendship. Those moments worked well when they were taking digs @ each other's choices in life, and where they'd ended up.

Movies we plan on checking out soon ...

- Star Wars
- The Hateful Eight
- Ant-Man
- Creed
- The Big Short
- Amy
- Room
- Crimson Peak
- Etc.

DEADPOOL

When they talk about actors born to play certain Comic Book characters :Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman,Patrick Stewart as Professor X
and Christopher Reeve as Superman,Ryan Reynolds as DeadPool will definitely be part of that list.
Reynolds has the ad lib, gift of gab DeadPool/Wade Wilson posseses.
This big screen version of the Merc with Mouth works so well because the writers of this film really did their homework, and everything about the
character is brought to life in the film

It's raunchy and ultra violent.Silly and very funny. The chemistry between Reynolds and the beyond sexy Morena Baccarin as DeadPool's lady Vanessa
is off the charts.
Also great in the film are Stefan Kapičić as Colossus,Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Ed Skrein as Francis / Ajax and
Gina Carano as Angel Dust.
There is great salty banter between Deadpool and T.J. Miller as Weasel and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al
The action sequences are great and fun especially the finale

My complaints are minor, some of the scenes felt a bit repetitive

Other than that this is a great comic book film and im looking forward to the sequel

How To Be Single

Sure it may be loaded with cliches but i really liked the efforts this film made to show all sides of being single. Not just the yearning for love 20 something,or the
serial party girl but people trying to establish real relationships even though they may not be ready for one.Single parents, and the one's so into their careers they realize
some great parts of life are passing them by
The cast does a great job,and there are some really funny and outstanding scenes that tell a lot of truths about dating

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

The Finest Hours

Like the 2000 film The Perfect Storm
The rescue and storm scenes are incredible in The Finest Hours
The story mainly develops Coast Guard Engineer Ray Sybert and high praise to Chris Pine for completely immersing himself in the character
though the other actors do a fine job their characters are very underdeveloped
There is an off balance to the film because they really try to establish a love story with the lovely
Holliday Grainger as Miriam, Webber’s fiancé worrying about Webber and then back to the action at sea so it's that stop start feel throughout
the film.

A good effort but definitely has the wait for the DVD stamp on it

Scale of 1-10 a 7

Dirty Grandpa

Ok im ashamed i laughed at about 50% of what happens in this flick.Ok the good stuff some of the sight gags,Robert Deniro saying some extremely crazy stuff,Aubrey Plaza at
her raunchiest.
The other stuff made me embarrased i was actually in the theatre watching it.The scenes involving the drug dealing souvenir shop owner and the police officers in the film go on far to long
and are just plain stupid.
Wait for this one to hit cable

Scale of 1-10 a 3

Fifty Shades of Black

Awful spoof of Fifty Shades of Grey.I laughed a total of 5 times.Nothing really works and gags that dont work seemed to go on forever i actually fell asleep
for a few minutes.Skip this one i cant even tell you to wait for the DVD.This should have only been a 5 minute skit.Oh and Kali Hawk looked great in different
sets of lingerie

Scale of 1-10 a 1½

JBlaze - Agreed. The cast are in for some nice paydays, and for sequel(s). It would be interesting to get a look @ the box office, VOD, blu-ray & dvd, and merchanding numbers for it later this year. Cool to see Reynolds do it in his hometown too.

Oh i cant wait for the DVD going to be interesting to see the deleted scenes

RACE

I actually thinK the 1984 TV movie The Jessie Owens story was stronger than the new film Race a biopic partially based on the
life of Jesse Owens.
Stephan James,Jason Sudeikis,Jeremy Irons,Barnaby Metschurat and David Kross all turn in good performances and i liked how the film
displayed how sportsmanship was able to bypass the hurdles of racism during the 1936 Olympics, plus the bond of friendship
between Owens and Carl 'Luz' Long that endured well after the games.
There is a rousing feel to the events that are actually quite suspenseful, even though i knew the outcome

There is a clunky feel to some of the scenes, and an uneven feel develops when the story shifts from Owens to the
politics and hand wringing over if Americans would even go to Berlin to compete in the games

Still Race is pretty good with flaws around the edges

Scale of 1-10 an 8

45 Years

45 Years is a film i had to be patient with due to it's slow and dwelling pace. The performances are great and revelations
found in the marriage of almost 45 years definitely pays off.
It definitely shows that even after sharing the same bed with someone for over 4 decades, you still may not know them fully

Scale of 1-10 an 8

Zoolander 2

Zoolander 2 is so insanely weird,it's almost entertaining, but unfortunately it's weighed down with grating and obnoxious scenes and characters.
There are a few laughs to be had but whatever i liked about the first film is just a fading shadow in this one.
I was amazed at how many celebrities kept showing up in the film, did they owe Ben Stiller a favor or something?
I have watched plenty of dumb but funny films but Zoolander 2 isnt one of them

Scale of 1-10 a 2

Props on the Zoolander 2, 45 Years & Race updates, JBlaze.

Believe they waited too long to cash in on the Zoolander sequel. They should have probably capitalized quickly when ideas were still fresh earlier in the 2000s. Heard some good things in recent memory about 45 Years. Peoples' reviews online, etc. Good amount of buzz for Race. Well-promo'd with the various contests for ROE & screening passes in Canada.

As for Deadpool ... yeah ... the extras are bound to be plenty of fun. Just judging by the promotional clips, redband trailer(s), soundbytes & more. Cool to see them cash in big-time with the film this past month.

the DVD sales are going to be ridiculous

Yeah - they'll be smart to doctor it up with plenty of special features & bullshit gags & behind-the-scenes.

Great to see movies like Deadpool and Kick-Ass collect bank. Too many action/superhero movies try and sugarcoat it with the PG-13 ratings and family vibes. Fuck that ... you can still build buzz & earn beaucoup cheddar by taking it Rated-R and drawing in the mature crowd.

Lol @ the dumb-ass parents taking their grade-school kids to Deadpool and apparently storming out mad not realizing what they were in for. People are dumb as fuck in the "smartphone / $4 latte / mouthbreathing generation".

THE WITCH

The_Witch_poster.png

A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.

Have to say, this IMO was surprisingly good, even though it seemed like a Lifetime movie at times.. plus there werent any cheap jump scares,so that was a nice change of pace

Score: 7 out out of 10

(got to love how the television announcer said the title: "The WITCHHHH ..Rated R." :roflmao2: )

TRIPLE 9

If you like your crime drama's with grit like i do Triple 9 is the movie for for you.Corrupt cops, and ex-military operatives
pull off heists for a Russian mobster, right in the middle of gang wars in Atlanta

Director John Hillcoat has assembled quite a cast that includes:Casey Affleck,Anthony Mackie,Clifton Collins Jr,Chiwetel Ejiofor,
Norman Reedus,Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet and Woody Harrelson

Terrificly crafted and intense scenes laced with suspense pushed me to the edge of my seat several times.
A few turns in the films final 30 minutes took me out of the film for and induced a few unintended laughs.

I think of Triple 9 as a cousin of other crime drama's like HEAT.
Im looking forward to more films from John Hillcoat and writer Matt Cook

GOD'S OF EGYPT

GOD'S OF EGYPT is a tale of God's and mortals that.....ahhhh who cares ?
GOE is one of the cheesiest big budget films i have ever seen.Ok whats good about it?
Some of the CGI & SFX are flawless and i actually liked a couple of action sequences

Then some of the CGI & acting is so bad i couldn't wait for some scenes to end.
Actor's show up that i havent seen on the big screen in years and i cant believe it's in something as cringe
inducing as this.
People of color are mainly in the background in crowd scenes,or servants with the exception of
Chadwick Boseman as a fey and odd God Thoth and a giant snake riding female uhhhm warrior still
not sure what she was.

There is absolutely no passion or strength behind the delivery of lines from the clunky script

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scale of 1-10 a 2

London Has Fallen

Not as much fun as Olympus has Fallen but at least the cast looks like they're having a good time
Extremely predictable and loaded with plot holes as huge as the low budget explosions in the film
There are a few fun one liners and some of the action sequences are sleek, but the preposterous scenes especially
one that occurs at night over rule much of the film

Wait for the DVD

Vikings
Vinyl
Billions
American Crime Story: People vs. OJ Simpson
House of Cards
Black Sails

Good ones, Vicious. Gonna get around to some of them in the future. Good to read the feedback from BGOL fam' & reviewers/critics for them. Have seen the first 2 seasons and change for House of Cards.

yeah -you are definitely missing out on House of Cards... weakest shows on my list are Black Sails and Billions

Vicious - Yeah - we sort of got lost in the shuffle with all the movies & tv series in recent years. We were trying to keep up with the movies, as well as series like House of Cards, Strike Back, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Survivor, and Fargo.

so did anyone actually see Pointbreak 2015?

POINT BREAK
This is one of those remakes that i wish had copied the original word for for word. The extreme sports scenes are great and its visually stunning
with a good soundtrack laced in,but the script is terrible.Uneven, silly, complicated for no reason.Couple that with the duller than a butter knife performance
from Luke Bracey and its beyond bad.
Edgar Ramirez fairs a bit better, but even after awhile his eco,new agey delivery became grating
and that ending WTF??
Go watch the original....watch this version when you...well any way you can see it for free.

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

About 15 minutes into 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE i knew i was watching a film that has the great structure of a Twilight Zone episode
and an Alfred Hitchcock film
The silence ,mysterious characters, the sounds of the off camera going ons,and the slow reveal.
John Goodman is beyond excellent as Howard a man straight out of a Doomsday Prepper episode who brings an injured in a car wreck
woman named Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead in another resourceful as ever role) to his bunker ,which is also occupied
by Emmett (an excellent John Gallagher, Jr.)
Howard tells her there has been some type of fallout and then aliens will arrive to take the rest,so they cant leave and must
remain in the bunker.

That's all i will say about the plot, this is a very suspenseful film with a slow build with amazing moments all the way
to the films final act.
Which brings me to my only problem with the film. There were things i liked about it but some of it
also felt forced,as if the producer's and writers got together and said, well the audience might not like this path so let's
give them a new path for about 10 minutes. What's crazy is even with that minor complaint i was left wanting more, and
wondering if i will get more in the future.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY

THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY is silly, vulgar, offensive, and cringe inducing and i admit i laughed throughout the film
This story of two brothers seperated after the deaths of their parents are reunited 28 years later
One is Sebastian (Mark Strong) an MI6 agent, the other Nobby( Sacha Baron Cohen) a football loving lout with 11 children and a wife (Rebel Wilson)
as vulgar as he is.They reunite when Nobby screws up Sebastian's mission and team up to stop a biological terrorist

Strong is the perfect straight man to Cohen's insanity.Filled with sight gags and one that is EXTREMELY over the top ,so much so i could feel my
stomach turn a bit
TBG may not be the perfect comedy or one of Cohen's best but there are far to many laugh out loud moments i must praise it for all of it's
comedic efforts

Scale of 1-10 an 8

THE PERFECT MATCH

I would say about 85% of The Perfect Match follows the same structure of Rom-Com's like Boomerang in which the player meets someone that might
change his player ways. How it differs from Boomerang, there are more friends for the main character, more eye candy, and an absolutely reality based twist
that is definitely a mirror image of the present dating scene
Unfortunately when this twist drops it's not brought out well emotionally by the actors ,it's so stiffly portrayed it was painful to watch
Throw in some obnoxious side characters that serve no purpose and that should have gone to DVD fog wraps itself around the film

Wait for the DVD or for it to pop up on BET by the end of the year

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL ranks right up there with one of my favorite kid with incredible abilities on the run films
FireStarter.Coupled with a haunting and great score by David Wingo Midnight Special is an intense and entrancing story
about a young boy named Alton Meyer (Jaeden Lieberher),with incredible ablities who is not only sought by the government
but also by a cult thinking he is linked to a prophesy. His parents Roy (Michael Shannon) and Sarah (Kirsten Dunst), plus
a friend and protector Lucas (Joel Edgerton) hit the road in flight from the aforementioned and the adventure begins.

The cast which includes Adam Driver as a NSA analyst Sevier are all terrific.

Other than some gaps in the story here and there the narrative is nearly perfect. The structure and tone of the film has an
indie feel, with action sequences that are definitely jarring and sharply directed by Jeff Nichols.

At the films core is a story about the love for a child, that shouldnt have any bounds, limitless and as
far reaching as the universe
