Music biz is legal pimping. Your CD - YOU pay for it. YOU pay for the production. YOU pay for promotion. YOU pay for the videos. YOU pay for the tours. YOU pay for the songs if you don't write them. The record company may front the money, but all of the money for the CD comes out of the CD sales. YOU have to fight to make ANYTHING. EVERYBODY gets paid before you do and YOU - the artist - are whom everybody is paying to see/hear. On Toni Braxton's 2nd CD Secrets she made like $0.25 per $15.00 CD.
You know why you don't see many 30+ singers besides the stars - especially first timers? Because no 30+ person would sign on for that bullshit. Ask an 18 yr old to sign for a brand new Benz and all he has to do is make $200 monthly payments and he will ask one question: Where do I sign. He will blindly pay 30% interest on a 6 year deal. Ask a 30+ and the questions will be many and likely end with the 30+ walking out.

2nd CD - Sells okay. Artist distracted from fame and wanting more money from label.
3rd CD - Sells subpar and maybe flops.
Label makes a greatest hits CD...and you never hear from said artist again
