Apple Music now boasts more than 10 million paying subscribers

The cumulative number of Apple Music subscribers continues to grow and now exceeds 10 million users, this according to a recent report from the Financial Times. Since launching in over 100 countries in late June, Apple Music has had somewhat of a tumultuous existence. The initial launch, if you remember, was plagued with a number of frustrating bugs and an inconsistent and muddled user interface.

But over the last few months, Apple has quietly addressed a number of these problems and the service’s popularity appears to be trending upwards. The last figure regarding Apple Music subscribers came from Tim Cook who said this past October that Apple’s streaming music service boasted over 6.5 million paying members. So in about three months time, the total number of Apple Music subscribers has increased by over 50%. And priced at $9.99 for an individual subscription, the company’s streaming service is already generating $100 million in revenue a month.

To put the 10 million subscriber figure into perspective, consider that it took Spotify a little less than 6 years to hit 10 million subscribers. Of course, it was a lot easier for Apple to hit that same milestone given that streaming music is a lot more mainstream these days, not to mention the company’s unique advantage of being able to bundle Apple Music with every new iOS device sold.

Today, Spotify boasts over 20 million subscribers, so Apple still has a ways to go to catch up. Nonetheless, reaching a tad less than 50% of Spotify’s subscriber base less than a year in is an impressive achievement.

For what it’s worth, Spotify was quick to counter the report with good news of their own. Speaking to Business Insider, Spotify told Jay Yarow that the company during the second half of 2015 enjoyed their highest period of subscriber growth ever.

“The last time Spotify announced numbers was in June of 2015,” Yarrow writes. “At that time it had 20 million subscribers, up from 10 million a year prior. If Spotify’s growth was faster than ever in the second half of 2015, then it added more than 5 million new users over the last six months of the year. If we had to guess, we’d say Spotify had 25-30 million subscribers at the end of 2015.”

Seems like a reasonable estimate.

Damn. Apple been cashing in since iTunes. It's just amazing people still pay for fucking music, but I can't hate the people making money off it.

yup

someone need to write a book on how the ENTIRE music bent over and let Apple do them...

while instead of teaming up with a young college who tried to show them the way EARLY in Napster.

I'm not going to lie. I was skeptical of Apple Music at first, but this is absolutely the best bargain around for a music lover. You have unlimited access and unlimited streaming to full albums and it even allows you offline access. I have NO CLUE how artists are getting paid from this, because there is almost no incentive to buy an album through itunes.

Disagree... for the same $9.99, Youtube red gives you access to everything on youtube ad free and Google Music which has access to the same 30Million or so songs as everyone else. Same price, you get more music and video. And it's cross platform

Yeah, but it you are an itunes user then you have access to all this shit and your personal itunes library all at the same time. I guess really depends on what you use to play music. Since everything I have is Apple based then it perfect for me.

I've used both services. This Apple Music shits on Youtube. Unless you want to watch videos all the time.

But for music listeners? Apple Music is the best shit out . I'm still trying to get it. Why the labels are doing it and why Apple is only charging 9.99 for their whole catalog.

Man I just found out that you can add pre-releases albums to your Apple Music playlist including the pre-release songs. Now there is even less need to buy an album. I just added Anderson paak's Malibu album to the playlist. Of course I'll get the bootleg version for the car and the board.... But I don't know how you can beat this shit.

How are the artists getting anything from this?

I'm telling you man. Its a GREAT service. Its convenient as hell. And for labels to let this go down? To me this shit is worse than Napster on the outside looking in. Like this shit is damn near free at 9.99 a month when you factor in EVERYTHING you get. So i'm confused how the labels let this shit go down. I can't imagine this staying 9.99 for too much longer. But you get great bang for your buck.

Like new cd's cost 9.99 on Tuesday and if you wait a week after it drops its 13.99 and up for ONE CD. I can get EVERY CD essentially to every be released just for 9.99 a month and about 120 a year.

Genius. Subscription model (keeps most customers damn near in perpetuity), no physical product, and low payout to content originators...winner-take-all market

Damn. Haven't paid for music since the black album but I might have to look into this.

Tell me why I don't know none of yall motherfuckers but when it's BGOL approved, I trust your opinion more than the heads I do know

Man trust us.... This shit is a steal for a music lover. You basically get unlimited access to almost every album in existence and you can add these albums to your iTunes library with the rest of your music without any hassle or delay. Then you can download these albums for offline use. The only thing you can't do is burn this album to a cd. It's really good for those albums that you don't want to waste the hard drive space on downloading but you still want to give the artist a shot because you like a couple of songs.

I've had it since launch... Product is crazy. I have a 64gb 6s. I got like 24,000 songs on my Mac that sync up with Apple Music on top of their catalog.

Because 9.99 is what the others charge for the same thing.

For now, Google Play Music’s biggest advantage is that it’s sticking with an ad-supported free option. The gratis version only forces users to suffer through a pre-roll ad before listening and never any commercial interruptions while enjoying a number of radio-like options. Similar to Pandora, users can create a station based on their favorite artists, YouTube videos or even take advantage of a seemingly endless, ever-evolving, human-curated playlists.

Based on technology developed bySongza, a company Google acquired on July 1, 2014, users can select streams based on their mood, situation, time of day, genre, and much more. Examples include “Happy Hour Indie Rock,” “A Breezy Beach Trip,” “Evening Jazz,” or, for individuals looking for workout tunes, “Fast-Paced Rap.” Users can also choose a number of genres and artists, and create an “I’m Feeling Lucky” station based on past preferences.

Three main drawbacks are that users can only skip a handful of songs in a given time period, aren’t told which track is coming up next, and the personalized stations take a little bit of trial and error to match your tastes.

Of course, Google offers a number of enticements to upgrade to the $9.99 per month model. With that, you also get access to on-demand streaming from the entire 30-million-song library, which is comparable to that of Apple, Spotify, Tidal, etc., and also roughly 30 times the size of Pandora’s.

Other premium perks include offline listening and cloud storage for up to 50,000 songs (including ones downloaded via other services). It also includes access to the YouTube Music Key, a secondary service that lets you stream music videos without ads, play them in the background on your mobile device, and download them for offline viewing.

I've had spotify for about a year and a half and it's worth every penny. I like to support artists I like so I still buy albums but for the other millions of songs it's spotify. I don't even download anymore unless it's not on spotify. I may get an iPhone this year and do the trial for Apple music
