A former car salesman reveals 4 tricks dealers use to get you to spend — and how to outsmart them

Bring Cash and all of that goes out the window....just bought a car last year walked in said what I wanted what I was willing to pay and asked for paperwork. They tried the mumbo jumbo but when I said I'm ready to look else where they came off 6,000 on the vehicle...my car notes are less than 125.00
Nobody sells you a car because of what you're willing to pay. They will sell you a car based on whether it's profitable or if it makes business sense to sell at a particular price. I will repeat it again, you are more likely to get a lower sales price on a car if you have good credit and finance or lease the car. Your cash sale is not attractive to a car seller who also offers financing. Cash sales are desirable for private sellers.

BTW, I love people like you who come in telling me what they want to pay. My highest gross was on a sale to someone who said that.

Well apparently everyone isn't a jackass like you when it comes to selling ;)

I brought the cash and they bit...I'm cruising in a nice ride enjoying life not scrambling to make a car payment like some folks. I'm satisfied..that's all that matters my boy. You do You...I'll do me and pass on the advice that worked for ME

Surely, you don't think every salesman has your best interest in mind. LOl. Don't fool yourself. They only came off $6000 because it was overpriced to begin with. Your cash ain't nothing new and special to them.

I wasn't trying to change your mind , chief.

I wasn't where I could type in depth when I posted earlier...

1. Pull your credit report so you know what's going on before you get there and they pull it. Carry Cash and you take all of their power away.

2. When I bought my car last year, I checked the lot out only for inventory...I did a carfax report on the vehicle from the house and checked kelly bb instead of pulling up to the lot first. I also wasn't going to buy the most expensive car (like I see a ton of people do). Most people who know me will tell you I'm all about getting the most with minimum. All I needed was a nice vehicle to get me to point a to b and carry my equipment . With my work as a photographer can rack up a few grand per day (depending on my client) so what I did was save up 10K over a period of time (since my old honda was teetering) and when I made the jump I went in with 8k cash and the vehicle I wanted was priced at 16K and it had 15,000 miles on it and one owner. Dealer came off 2,000 at first but after playing hardball and threatening to go up the road after seeing the cash for himself he caved in and knocked off another 5,000 and that made it 7,000 total (had to go back and look at ppw) which was well below the Kelley BB price I researched it at..so I knew I won...I am about 1,500 from paying it off in less than a year and practically driving a new car with a warranty...remember factor in tag, title, fees when you do the final cost of the car!

3. The main thing is GET WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD AND A GOOD WARRANTY REMEMBER CARS DEPRECIATE!!!!!

Me with the Ride after signing the ppw

Fam you copped a Kia, not knocking you in your purchase but those ships are pretty much why you should purchase in cash.. They are not worth the money paid in interest over a 3-5 year span lol

Wait a minute, you put money down and still had a $125/mo payment on that shit. The car should have been $125/mo with nothing down. LOl

Yes, my company is buying the extra 15k miles.

I didn't miss it. You suggested it wasn't a good idea to pay interest on financing a depreciating asset. You must think that leasing is free.

Leasing isn't free, but it is tax deductible depending on how you have structured yourself as an entity.

When purchased as personal property, car payments and interest payments, are not tax deductible.

All that aside, my basic fundamental premise still stands - paying interest on a depreciating capital asset should be avoided if possible or unless there is a some tax advantage to doing so.

It might be the car.

My mom got more from Carmax than what the Acura dealer offered

How many miles and what was the condition of the car?

Mofos offered me 3k below market for a trade in.. The car was brand new purchased 6 months prior

It was a 10 year old Acura TSX with like 120 on it.

It might be she got such a good deal on the car, that they weren't trying to give her a decent deal on the trade in. It was in the middle of last winter during a period of shitty weather where it was snowing almost every week, so they probably were just happy getting rid of a car.

She got the 2015 cheaper than what another dealer was trying to sell her for a 2014

Buy a used German car if you want. That shit will leave you looking like an idiot on the turnpike.
gotta get that warranty

Trade on value is $6658, how much did they give her?

I can't recall exactly, but I believe it was pretty significant a difference. Like a grand or two. I don't think the dealer was even trying to do blue book value.

Yup me too, Carmax offered me $7500 for my car, and the dealership came back with $6000 for my car, I pulled out the Carmax offer told them they better match them.

Man I'm a cash guy. I bought a brand new challenger after my trade in I paid a little more than 16k. I just got the 13 SXT with the Uconnect. I just don't see why I would have finance that amount when I had the cash didn't have to deal with any of this stuff you guys talking about in here. I wouldn't pay cash for a car that would cost me 30k, shit I flat out wouldn't get the car thats out of my price range. I'm not a car head at all and I will keep my car till the wheels fall off had it since May 2013 and only have 27k miles on it.

Shit is basic as hell right now plan on putting on a black finish line stripe

OT: BDR, what do you think about the M3? I need an everyday car but I've been liking the 2013 X5M lately. I need something exciting this time around, so it has to be an M car.

Nothing wrong with cash in hand. If a sales manager asks me about payment, I keep it open to the possibility of dealer financing (when negotiating price). And I would definitely go through with the dealer financing process just to see if I can get 0% financing. "Free" borrowed money is good money. If not, then CU financing.

M3 is a sardine can in the interior.. I'd say the x5m for the space inside and everyday use

X5 is a good look.....I'm loving it...IMHO I like the lines of the 13 better than the 14..
Yes, the E70 X5 has a more masculine look to it. It also has the classic BMW ride to it. The newer one, I heard, is soft like my F10.

Have you had any major issues with it?

Nothing else.

This dude gets it. If you go into a dealership waving cash, you've taken away one bargaining chip from yourself.

You bring up a good point about the 5.0i. I have to lease it, so it must be a new one. I'll look into it.

On.
