Outkast turned down playing the Super Bowl halftime show

There is no bigger stage for an American musician than playing the Super Bowl halftime show, which has hosted everyone from Michael Jackson to, more recently, the Who and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

But the hip-hop duo Outkast turned down the opportunity to play the Super Bowl, according to Big Boi.

The rapper appeared on ESPN's "The Dan LeBatard Show" Thursday and, as Pitchfork reports, when asked about the most memorable sports event he's played, he mentioned that his group was once asked to perform the Super Bowl halftime show but rejected the offer.

The reason? His partner Andre 3000 refused to cut down Outkast's songs for time, in particular "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move."

"[Andre] didn’t want to cut the songs, he wanted to do the full songs. It was like, 'Nah, can’t do it,'" Big Boi said, adding that he tried to convince Andre to change his mind.

"Hopefully they invite us back," he said.

Given the song choices, it's likely Outkast was asked to play the 2004 Super Bowl. Outkast released its album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003, and both "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move" from it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, so it's no surprise the biggest sporting event of the year wanted a piece of the group.

If Outkast had played in 2004, we wouldn't have had the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake "wardrobe malfunction," which is certainly an alternative history to think about.

Andre is talented but he's a real bitch to Big Boi.

He wouldn't tour the album with him and now this. They could've easily doubled their album sales.

Yeah it seems like Dre is just fucking up the churches money...

I want to hear Dres side, he reasoning for his actions

Damm that would have been dope too, they are a crew that could pull a super bowl off, man that would have been huge for the south and all of hip hop

3 Stacks is a damn genius

but right here?

that is the most ass backwards ridiculous self absorbed selfish sh*t I have ever heard.

ALL Super Bowl acts have to reduce their song length

ITS HALFTIME OF A DAMN SPORTING EVENT

When they had the reunion concert they didn't play all the songs in entirety.

And during most performance during that album run especially on talk shows the songs were edited.

He is/was full of it.

Damn Big Boi is a TRUE BLUE FRIEND well he's his blood brother at this point man.

Every time a story comes out about some big shit that would have had them somewhere on the level of the rolling stones if they had just done all the shit they were supposed to do... you find out dre wasn't fucking with it so Big boi couldn't do it lol

I don't even see how he can talk about this type of shit really lol

limit it to musical genius and selfish individual.

Trust me, if people only knew all of the offers that Outkast was getting to perform it would blow their mind. Shit did not happen simply because 3000 was trying to find himself. That's why I laugh when we have these who was the best rap group arguments. It's Outkast, hands down. Run DMC for legend's sake, but nobody did the things that Outkast did, and passed up. They were already huge and dude just decided he did not want to perform anymore. He truly does not give a fuck about money. A lot of people say that shit, but they don't really mean it. He does. I know for a fact that they had an offer for close to a half a mil to perform on the Tom Joyner cruise after they did those concerts in Atlanta, and they had to turn it down because Dre said he was cool. Big Boi is better than me man.

3 stacks told y'all already lol

And say I'm sorry I'm awkward, my fault for fuckin' up the tours
I hated all the attention so I ran from it
Fuck it if we did, but I hope we ain't lose no fans from it
I'm a grown-ass kid, you know ain't never cared about no damn money

wow

Correct me if I'm wrong, but thought there is no pay for the show anyways, so it's more of a bragging rights thing and honor I would guess.

It's cool if Andre isn't about making money but he's one half of a duo. That's some real selfish shit right there. At their zenith, they could've joined the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna etc. That ship has long sailed. Big Boi is a better man than me because I could never forgive Andre for that. It seemed to be on some narcissistic shit too. :smh:

No pay + exposure to 100+ million in America + exposure to millions worldwide = $$$$$$$.
Yeah but that leads back to a trickle of their album sales that in this day and age when sales are dismal, big deal.

Other question is legally, can they do a performance together? Wasn't there something legally about the labels that they had to outlive a contract or something?

No pay but you get worldwide exposure. Doing the Super Bowl instantly translates to money in your pocket. Go look at Missy's sales after her appearance.

Fair enough, I was speaking in the context of 2004. Exposure back then and now means more than album sales. SuperBowl performances open up more doors. For example, more dates touring world wide, sponsorships, a whole new fan base etc.

One artist I know refused to perform at Glastonbury a few years back because he said he wasn't getting paid enough. He was too short sighted to see the long term benefits performing there. I wanted to smack some sense into him. I couldn't believe he turned it down.

I totally agree about any artist performing there, it is incredible exposure yes, but Outkast is a different animal. Andre, has always been rumored, does not do this for the money. But my other thing was the legality of them not being able to perform as a group together.

If they could, then why have they done nothing together for all these years, they could sugar coat stuff for the public, but why have they never done any performances, reunions, tours, anything? If I'm wrong then no probs. But think that is the real underlying issue.

Outkast is a different animal but Outkast is not bigger than the Superbowl. That was a huge mistake I don't see that offer happening again. :smh:
