Playing a Hacker on Mr. Robot Is Totally Getting Into Rami Malek’s Head

Playing a paranoid hacker-genius gets into your head. “The more I’ve worked on this show, the more I refrain from getting on the computer or on my phone, because I realize just how fragile our information [is], and how susceptible it is to being compromised,” said Rami Malek, the star of USA’s summer breakout show Mr. Robot. Vulture ran into our summer crush on the red carpet at People magazine’s “Ones to Watch” party Wednesday night, which he attended with his co-stars Carly Chaikin and Portia Doubleday. Malek said with a laugh, “I cover up my webcam, and I’ve even started to cover up the microphone now because I think they are listening.”

Apparently, his co-stars feel the same way. “I always leave my laptop open, and now it’s an OCD thing that I have to close it all the time,” said Chaikin, who plays fellow FSociety member Darlene. “I had tape over my camera that I kept having to take off because I would video-chat. Now I just make sure it’s shut. It’s more paranoia because I know what’s possible. It’s weird to walk around every single place I go and it comes to my head, ‘Oh, we could hack that, or we could do this.’ It’s crazy.”

Chaikin went on: “When I [asked my best friend], ‘What’s your password for this?’ and she told me, I was like, ‘That’s unacceptable. That’s literally unacceptable.’ She’s like, ‘Who is going to hack my American Airlines thing?’ And I was like, ‘You never know.’” Those are the words Fsociety lives and dies by.

Thanks for the tweets about Mr Robot! Any chance you have more scoop on season 2? — Kevin
Good news, Kevin, my love for Mr. Robot knows no bounds, so I hounded EP Sam Esmail to find out where the second season will pick up in the aftermath of fsociety’s big hack. “It’ll open 30 days after the first season ended,” Esmail told me, noting that season 2 “really is about Elliot trying to reconcile what this means in seeing Mr. Robot. That honestly is what’s driving the second season.”

The Americans Showrunners on How Keri Russell Was Cast

This year’s Writers Guild Awards’ television nominees include Inside Amy Schumer's Kim Caramele, Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields of The Americans, and Sam Esmail, whose show, Mr. Robot, became the breakout hit of 2015. The writers gathered at the New York Institute of Technology auditorium Wednesday night for an hour-plus conversation that covered how Keri Russell was cast in The Americans, and why Esmail’s decisionto direct all ten episodes of Mr. Robot’s second season is keeping him up at night.

Keri Russell was cast on a hunch. Discussion of casting strategies featured prominently throughout the panel, included this tidbit of how Keri Russell was hired to star as Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans. According to Weisberg:

“I was in a room with John Landgraf, the president of [FX] and five other people, and a list of the 100 best-known television and some film actresses in Hollywood, who were in a certain age range. Everyone was studying the list, and John went, ‘Keri Russell.’ That’s how [she was cast].”

The reason? “John had this intuition that she had played such a 100 percent different type,” says Weisberg, “[and] that it would be incredibly fascinating and rich to have her move in an entirely different direction.”

Sometimes actors talk in gibberish when asked to audition a scene in Russian. Fields revealed that when they cast for The Americans, the actors do the audition scenes in both Russian and English. Caramele asked Weisberg and Fields whether any actors spoke gibberish to fake their way onto the show. “The funny thing is, they try,” said Fields. “But we have a translator that, when someone gets close, their auditions get sent out to the translator for vetting, and sometimes the translator will say, ‘Ha-ha no. Not remotely.’”

Writing and directing is really hard. Toward the end of 2015, it was announced that Esmail, along with helping write season two of Mr. Robot, would direct all ten episodes. While he is still committed to that trajectory, the prospect has been giving him nightmares. “I get up at six, and I go to bed at two a.m., and I am a nervous wreck the whole day,” he said. “I am a control freak on set, but I am less so in the writers room. I actually like to hide there, because it is the most fun place. We are yelling at each other, and telling each other to fuck ourselves, but nothing is personal. It’s all constructive.”

He continued, “On set, it is execution time. It is about making it what you have on the page — all those ideas you fought so hard for in the room — really come to life. And that is where I get hands-on.” He was asked by the panel’s moderator what will happen this year when he begins to direct scripts he also wrote. “I had great directors in the first season, but they probably hate me,” he said. “Which is one of the reasons that drove me to direct all the episodes. I wanted to make it easy on [the directors], [and] harder on me.”

Everything is derivative.

Several comments elicited applause throughout the evening, the loudest following Esmail’s defense of the numerous influences that helped shape Elliot Alderson and Evil Corp. “I think there is a way to be inspired without being derivative,” he said, adding it doesn’t matter that he “ripped offAmerican Psycho, Dexter, Clockwork Orange, and Fight Club.

“The landscape is pretty derivative,” he said. “Everything is a remake of a sequel of an adaptation that is a prequel. As much as I enjoyed watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s literally beat-for-beat A New Hope. There is no bones about it. And now everybody is like, 'This is amazing and the most original [and] best film.' I’m like, ‘Okay, I guess it works now.’”

Grace Gummer Will Play an FBI Agent Tracking Down Fsociety in the Next Season of Mr. Robot

We're starting to get a better picture of season two of Mr. Robot, which creator Sam Esmail said would delve deeper into the emotional repercussions of Elliot's realization that he has a very active imagination. Varietyreports that Grace Gummer will join the second season of Mr. Robot, last year's breakout show, as a series regular. She'll be playing Dominique "Dom" DiPierro, a young FBI agent investigating the hack that brought down Evil Corp at the end of last season, which means hunting down the various Fsociety members including Rami Malek's Elliot Alderson. Good luck tracking down Mr. Robot, Christian Slater, though! (You know, because he's imaginary.)

The first season of USA Network's drama-thriller series "Mr. Robot" was met with critical acclaim from fans and critics as it won a Golden Globe Award and the Sixth Critics Choice Television Award for best drama.

Rami Malek, who plays the character of Elliot Alderson – protagonist of the series – talked about the possibilities of Season 2 and how the story will continue in the upcoming season.

Malek also discussed his opinion on Grace Gummer, who will be joining the cast in the second season.

However, when asked whether he can share some details regarding Gummer's character, FBI Agent Dominique DiPierro, he refused and said that instead of her role, he can share details about the actress as both Malek and Gummer have worked together before.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, he said: "I can't tell you much about her, but I do know her previously. So, we've just been texting one another and looking forward to working with each other."

"Grace Gummer is such a really wonderful spirit. She's just fun to be around and very professional."

As reported by IB Times previously, Malek and Christian Slater had revealed new details about Season 2 of "Mr. Robot." Malek revealed that the second season will explore the past of Alderson and will show how Alderson became what he is today.

The story in the second season will tell the story of Alderson and how he started to imagine Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) while mistaking him for a real person.

When asked about how he is preparing for playing the role of a hacker once again, Malek said that even when he was on a break after Season 1, the show never left his head and he was actually preparing this whole time for improving upon his role as Alderson.

"When something has such a massive effect on our culture, you can't step too far away from it," Malek said.

Though the release date of "Mr. Robot" Season 2 is not yet confirmed, it is rumoured to premiere in June/July of 2016.

Craig Robinson Joins Mr. Robot; Beep Boop

just like the Brooklyn rapper, the former Office funnyman has signed up for a recurring role in Mr. Robot. He'll play Ray, "a neighborhood local who reaches out to Elliot in his time of need," probably by telling him to be his best self. With this news, Robinson instantly leaps to the top of our unofficial Mr. Robot-cast-member-most-likely-to-do-the Robot rankings.

The Mr. Robot Cast on Emotional Toll of Shooting That Graveyard Scene

21-mr-robot.w529.h352.jpg

Mr. Robot was the surprise hit of the 2015 television slate, a show perfectly suited to our society’s current zeitgeist in which technology is forever expanding, through the Internet of Things, into our every day lives. The show doesn’t return until mid-July, so cast members Rami Malek, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, and Christian Slater, were pretty tight lipped about the future of fSoceity during their Vulture Festival panel with editor Abraham Riesman. But they did dig up some pretty good intel on what it takes to hack into the minds of their characters.

The graveyard scene was the hardest scene to film. When Elliot Alderson realizes that Mr. Robot (aka his father) is a delusion, and that he actually led the Evil Corp hack (and created fSociety), the moment happens in a graveyard. It is the first time all four actors are on the screen together, and each claimed that shoot, which was filmed in a real cemetery on Doubleday’s birthday, was the hardest of the entire season. “It took nine hours,” Doubleday said of the scene. Malek and Slater filmed in the morning, but both Doubleday and Chaikin were on set to watch, and each struggled to contain their emotions as they watched Elliot try to come to grips with the realization that he is Mr. Robot. “We were sobbing watching them,” says Chaikin. “After they were done, all I wanted to do was throw up. It was so amazing. By the time we had to film, I said, ‘I can’t cry [anymore].’”

When Doubleday rewatched that scene, she began to wonder what people would make of seeing something that intense on TV. “I remember walking away,” she said, “and thinking, ‘OMG, is that what this show is going to be like? How will people respond?’”

During the panel, Malek emphasized the rapport he developed with Slater, but he felt that he couldn’t “horse around” during this scene. “When he grabbed my face at the grave, I had to look him straight in the eye,” says Malek. “We shot it over and over again, and just kept looking at Christian dead in the eye, and I thought, ‘If I have to do this scene again, I am going to be hurt for a while.’”

How Sam Esmail got the greenlight to direct all of the second season. It has been mentioned on countless occasions how Sam Esmail, the show’s creator, intended for Mr. Robot to be a feature film, and that season one is the equivalent of the film’s act one. Esmail directed several of those episodes, but he decided that not only would he contribute to the second season’s scripts, he wanted to direct all ten of its episodes. According to Slater, USA Network have one ask before giving Esmail the greenlight: “They felt confident,” he said, “but it is still a big leap so they asked Sam to write eight scripts ahead of time, [before] he could go ahead with the directing. Instead, Sam wrote 12.”

The realness of Angela and Darlene. Doubleday, who plays Angela, mentioned that she and Chaikin (who plays Darlene) often discuss how glad they are to play fully fleshed-out characters. “There are so many scripts I get where, in the breakdown, your character is described as funny and cute,” says Doubleday. Both her and Chaikin said it was refreshing to play a character that wasn’t boxed in as a romantic interest. “When Sam told me that Angela was this girl who is going to go after this huge corporation, and that I had to portray what it is like to climb the ladder as a corporate woman now,” says Doubleday “I was so excited when I found that out.”

Costumes are pivotal. You might think it’d be easy to dress a character who’s antisocial, but Malek said it took time to find just the right clothes for Elliot, who dresses like he’s “armoring up.” Malek described the goal for the aesthetic as, “If Elliot was to put his head down, and there was a drone above him, he could disappear into the city for a moment.” After trying on several types of black pants, including one that had elastic in it, he, Esmail, and the wardrobe department decided on jeans that were thicker than most (“this guy doesn’t like to be touched”), and a hoodie that would double as an outfit made for urban combat. “When I put that hoodie and backpack on,” says Malek, “I start walking and talking like Elliot, and I also stop touching people.”

Mr. Robot Is Getting More Episodes and a Chat Show

The producers of Mr. Robot finally stopped procrastinating, closed all their programs, and clicked "yes" on the latest system update. And what a surprise: It comes with two more episodes and an after-episode talk show!

THR reports that USA has bumped up the second season of its buzzy drama (which premieres July 13) to 12 installments from ten, each of which will be followed by a new talk show called Hacking Robot. After-shows: doing for gerunds what TLC did for infinitives.
