Galaxy Note 5 design flaw: A backwards S-Pen can permanently damage the device

According to the video, it was very difficult to put in backwards on previous Notes.

The Galaxy Note 5 has a novel new S-Pen slot design. The Pen inserts flushly into the body and a spring-loaded mechanism ejects it. As Android Police discovered (and we just had to try too), the new design isn't that robust—gently inserting the S-Pen backwards into the slot can irreparably damage the Note 5.
The right way to dock the S-Pen into the device is to slide the pointy end in first, but if you slide the blunt end in first, the S-Pen will get jammed in the device. The spring mechanism that holds the pen in will clamp down on the wrong end of the S-Pen and won't let go. It is possible to wiggle the pen free from the spring's hold, but when we tried it the S-Pen detection features stopped working.

Normally on the Note 5, removing the S-Pen when the screen is off will launch a quick note taking app, and removing it when the screen is on will launch the radial S-Pen menu. After putting the S-Pen in backwards and wiggling it out, all of these features stopped working.

We were able to put our S-Pen in backwards again, which made the features work (with the S-Pen jammed into the slot). Eventually we were also able to remove the S-Pen in a state where the features worked again. However, Android Police reports that their S-Pen detection never worked again, even when they tried the reinsertion trick. Apparently once the retention mechanism clamps down on the wrong end of the S-Pen, removing it can permanently break the S-Pen functionality.

"Pen detection on our review unit is completely broken." Android Police writes. "During the making of this video in an attempt to show how easy it is to insert the stylus the wrong way, the S-Pen became hopelessly jammed in the slot, and I am now totally unable to remove it without the assistance of tools I'd rather not try, in the interest of avoiding further damage to the device."

It's important to note that the S-Pen can go in backwards with zero force. The pen is the same shape for its entire length, making backward insertion just as easy as forward insertion. It's something that a person could conceivably do if they weren't paying attention, and it's definitely something a small child would do.

If the potential for S-Pen damage is widespread, we don't see anyway Samsung can sell the Galaxy Note 5 like this. The company may need to either recall the Note 5 or issue a redesigned S-Pen. We've asked Samsung for its take on the issue and will update this post if we hear back.

I have the Note 4 and had the note 2 and 3. If you put the S pen in backwards, you're an asshole and deserve to have your shit fucked up!

is the Note 4 messed up on lollipop?

:dunno:

but i can tell you that my note 3 runs smooooove as fuck on lollipop.

however, when it auto-downloaded, my battery wasn't fully charged, and the phone went dead in the middle of the update... in the middle of the night. i woke-up to a 'brick.'

i lost ALL my shit.

oh well... the phone needed a good purge anyway.

damn dude.. why so hard. like the guy in the video said, it could be because a child or someone else accidently did it. Hell you could inadvertently done it. why the need to quickly call someone an asshole for making a mistake? Tone it down and ease up on the name calling

interesting.

Put Note 4 on the shelf, got the S6 Edge Plus & I love it. 64GB version & I love the new software upsate. Touchwiz is a lot leaner & cleaner... Phone looks very nice, got the gold platinum.. Skipped out on the Note cause I didn't like the back of it & I don't use the S-Pen that much.

Note 5 is a beast. Its clean nice battery life last all day. Off charger at 6am its now 10:30 am its still at 85% with moderate use. The s pen has not been an issue. If u put in backwords u should go back to a flip phone because ur most likely retarded.

Do you know how many times a day I use the Note 4's IR blaster? Plenty of times. I have 200 gigs of space on this phone with the additional SD card. Most of those gigs are comics, movies and 4K video I shoot with my phantom drone.

Moderate use? I run all my systems loud. Bright screen to the max, Bluetooth on and WiFi. Battery goes I flip my battery to the already charged one in my laptop bag.

You non-power users think everyone is you.

You're probably less than 1% of users walking around needing that much storage on your device.

That's not a design flaw, the pen isn't "designed" to be jammed up in there BACKWARDS so if you do that shit YOU just fucked up your phone:smh:

Samsung's statement:

We highly recommend our Galaxy Note 5 users follow the instructions in the user guide to ensure they do not experience such an unexpected scenario caused by reinserting the S-Pen in the other way around.

Same warning isn't in the Note 4 user guide:

I just came from Verizon & just checked out the Note 5 in person
Here is the thing about the Note 5.....
Regarding removable battery, you guys need to think long term

Fam, these fast/quick chargers will shorten the lifespan of batteries
After 1.5 yrs or so, that battery will be degraded like a mofo
If you are getting 12 hours charge now, later down the road, you might only get 8 hours off a full charge

I know you will say "I switch phones every year or 2 anyway"
Wrong.....Not anymore.....
Dudes are forgetting Verizon/Sprint, etc are getting rid of subsidized phones
So now you have to pay full price
The average person will not be spending full price (800+) for a high end Samsung or Apple phone every year or two !!!

The trend you will start to see is, people holding on to their phone for 3+ years, just like a computer
.....But you can't do that with the Note 5......because the battery will be degraded to shit in 2 years
.....And people will NOT want to deal with the hassle of mailing it off for a couple days & paying $100 in parts+labor+shipping just to get a fucking battery changed out !!!

I'm sticking with my Note 4 !!!
:hmm::hmm::hmm:

I just copped this yesterday. The options bitten on the Note 2 was replaced by a minimizing folder feature. I couldn't get my alarm app to work.

have to figure out how to put a Back and Forward button on the Google Chrome screen. but I just jumped up from the note 2 to the note 5 so there is an extensive learning curve.

I only got the phone because they offered me my upgrade 2 months early if I get the phone. So I did, & I got a free tablet... If I send in the rebate which I just did today
