MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

Saw The Gambler a few days back. Enjoyed it, despite the mixed reviews. Needed more John Goodman though as he only had a few minutes.

FOCUS

I had fun watching this film and the world of cons and scams.Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith)is so good he has a network of scam artist that pull
in about 1.2 million in a month,Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie) enters his life she's more of a bat your eyelashes snatch and grab scammer
she wants to learn from Nicky and she longs for the big score.

I liked how involving this film was, pulled into this world of running cons from small to elaborate.I had to ask myself several times, who's scamming who? who's in on it? Or am i being scammed myself, chalk it up to some convincing performances and moments from Smith and Robbie.
Throw in some great turns by B.D Wong and Adrian Martinez and i was sold

Focus was a bit drawn out and could have used some editing around the edges but it's still a good time and im looking forward to seeing it
again on DVD or cable

Scale of 1-10 an 8

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2

I laughed a few times but the flick has far to many painfully unfunny moments and repetitive gags that go absolutely nowhere
wait for cable and when there is absolutely nothing else on to watch

Scale of 1-10 a 3

^ yea HTTM worked best as a "one-joke" concept..

as for Focus i wonder if there going to be a "director's cut" version..probably is an extended love scene between Will and Margot that was edited

anyone know if there early screenings of Chappie..? rumor is if that movie flops, then Neil Blomkamp wont get the opportunity to do his ALIENS follow-up

Had a chance to check out BIRDMAN on Tuesday. Enjoyed it. Props on their many award(s) nominations and wins in recent weeks and months. Well-deserved. Well-written & acted. Been a fan of Keaton's work dating back to the '80s (Beetlejuice, Batman, etc) so it's always cool to see him in any role. Great supporting cast in Norton, Watts, Stone, Galifianakis & more. Camera work is stellar too. That feel that it's all "one cut" ... that you're right there in the scene many a time. Good shit.

Next Goal Wins - Really enjoyed this doc'. You'll find yourself pulling for the team as the underdog that could, and seeing them make strides to get better. Great outdoor shots/colors too as the bulk of the film is filmed outdoors. Definitely recommend it for sports/soccer fans ...

Next Goal Wins is a 2014 British documentary film directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The film chronicles the national football team of American Samoa as they try to recover from the indignity of being known as one of the weakest football teams in the world, and to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Had a chance to check out Anchorman 2 a few days ago. Like with most people ... found it funny in parts (like the 1st one). Fave scene again was the outdoor battle royale fight amongst the various news stations like in the first movie. SHITLOAD OF CAMEOS, as expected. You'll count a good 10 - 15 big stars in that one ... and of course the slow-mo crash scene in the winnebago driving down the freeway on cruise control earlier in the movie ...

Havent been to the movies in a about a month been traveling and spending time with family but i did catch this film on Showtime

THE BEST OFFER

Even though the twist became obvious to me after the first hour,Geoffrey Rush gives a great performance and aside from the film looking stunning the story is a good one about love happening unexpectantly, love changing a person and the hope of love.

This was a really good movie.
Great story, original characters and a bad ass villian.
This moved into my top 5 Disney/Pixar movies of all time.
It's that good

seen this on Showtime recently..the lead actress was good despite it being her first role, and having no acting experience whatsoever(apparently the casting director had seen her at the train station arguing with her baby daddy, and thats how she got the part)

had no idea Neill Blomkamp is a Short Circuit fan  this kindof was a mash-up of this and one of those "one-off" stories from a 2000AD comic or Judge Dredd Megazine

ThaBurgerPimp youre right about Fish Tank and thanks for the background info Thats hilarious!!!! and your welcome HF . So glad i didnt run out to see Chappie

Dude Chappie is definitely in the runnings for one of the worse movies of the year, fucking awful.

No doubt re: Chappie. Won passes for that movie and passed them off to a coworker. Figured if I'd ever see it it would be via BGOL video rental, lol.

FURIOUS 7

PHaRoB0Baft1db_1_m.jpg

This series of films have always been fun ,action packed and highly entertaining, and F7 has all of the above.Even
though i found Furious 7 lacking in some spots,i liked the additions of Jason Statham,Kurt Russell and the lovely Nathalie Emmanuel.
The team faces off against a revenge seeking Deckard Shaw(Jason Statham) brother of the now comatose
Owen Shaw, plus they have to track down a device called God's Eye.
If the films continue i wonder if Russell will become the M in the series.
What a great send off for the late great Paul Walker

IT FOLLOWS

it-follows.jpg

I guess it's the fact that im not a big horror fan that i wasnt dancing in the streets after watching It Follows.
I do give the film points for originality, some very suspenseful sequences and some cool camera work.
As the film enters it's second hour scenes began to feel repetitive, and maybe it was all to ambiguous
for me.Plus it had the feel of flicks i had seen before like Insidious.

Scale of 1-10 a 7

Right on, JBlaze. Thanks for the new ones ^ - gonna get caught up on some movies in the weeks ahead with The Walking Dead recently wrapped up, and the NCAA tourney + Better Call Saul finishing today.

the villian fight sequence was cool, but it just didnt really hold my attention. maybe if i were 14 i'd love it, but it doesnt hold a candle to Monsters Inc.

EX-MACHINA

Oscar Isaac is great as Nathan a brilliant but extremely eccentric and reclusive tech genius ,who through a contest invites
a young computer programmer named Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson),to his home to test an A.I he has created named
'Ava' (Alicia Vikander).

Discoveries are made that lead to claustophobic madness. The film has so much going for it ,from its haunting
tone to stunning cinematography by Rob Hardy.
There are a couple of plot holes and predictable turns but it still doesnt take away much from how mesmerizing the film is

I can't wait
Hope it's as good as you say

Right on, JBlaze.

Was hoping it would be good. A decent number of advance screening movie passes promoting it in recent weeks in Canada.

Saw Edge of Tomorrow, and the first 30 mins of John Wick. Edge of Tomorrow's a fun one, as most BGOL fam' would attest. Popcorn flick. Sci-fi action mixed with Groundhog Day. Gonna finish up the remainder of John Wick later this week or next weekend.

Don't lie man. Was it Blade Runner good or were you just into it like that?

3M - looks like it's being well-received so far  . Oscar Isaac's a good actor too. Have seen him in 2 roles the past year and change ... Inside Llewyn Davis, and A Most Violent Year. Good performances in both.

Watched The Bling Ring. Had it on in the background the other day. Basically a made-for-tv movie about the young people robbing the celebs like Lohan, Hilton & others a few years back. Not much character development or back story. Just young people going around stealing shit

The Avengers return in a action packed flick that left me cheering .The great thing about these films is that the action is coupled with enough dramatic and emotional
story arcs to keep even casual comic fans satisfied
James Spader is great as Ultron his mannerisms shining through the metallic villain he portrays.Of course the rest of the cast is game, and the film is laced with a good amount of humor too.
My only complaints are some of the turns in the film and and the fact that so much editing was done, scenes that were in the multiple trailers are missing from the final work.I dont mind a 3 hour movie as long as its good so maybe there will be a 3 hour DVD edition....hopefully
