Hackers Claim Credit For Downed Destiny, Call Of Duty Servers

Hacker group Lizard Squad claims it's behind attacks that laid low servers for both Destiny and Call of Duty: Ghosts today, leaving players unable to connect and play.

Having taken credit for a massive DDOS attack that took down the PlayStation Network last month as well as a bomb threat that caused Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley's plane to be diverted last month, Lizard Squad now sets its sights on two of Activision's most popular online games.

Players of both games have taken to Twitter (as well as our tips email) to complain about the server outages for the two games, perfectly timed to tick off the weekend gaming crowd. Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Destiny seem to have been affected. It's unclear which platforms encountered Call of Duty: Ghost problems, only that server problems were rampant.

:smh::smh:

I see they're still messing with John Smedley of Sony by posting photos of his dead fathers gravestone on twitter... These people are the lowest of the low.

Go to the Russian countryside in Destiny. Head left past the plane graveyard, through the building where you first encountered the moon-wizard, and out the back. Hear that gunfire? A handful of high-level players are probably standing there, shooting at a cave.

They're shooting at the cave because if you do that for even a little while, the cave winds up looking like this:

Yes, this is the latest technique for farming in Destiny, and it's by far the most effective I've found. Spend an hour or at the Murder Cave and you'll get so many engrams that you'll almost surely get SOMEthing you want. You don't even have to shoot a single enemy—loot spawns if you're in the vicinity, so your neighbors' kills still give you loot.

If you're lower level, you'll generate XP very quickly, even if your loot drops aren't that exciting. Valleywag's Sam Biddle hung around the cave with me and Jason last night and went from level 16 to level 18 mostly by sitting around, cracking jokes, and occasionally shooting things.

The technique, as shared in this video by Force Strategy Gaming (thanks BlitzKaiser!), has become so widespread that I've yet to go to this area of the Cosmodrome and not find at least one or two 24s or 27s sitting out there shooting.

The rules are simple, and agreed upon: Everyone stands behind the rock slab, everyone is sure to kill all of the hive thralls and acolytes before they get too far (if they escape, the constant spawning stops), and everyone takes periodic breaks to run into the cave and gather loot/ammo. It's kind of beautiful, really.

If you're down in Russia this weekend, it's worth swinging by just to see everyone working together so effectively. Might as well stick around to get some loot, too.

I was doing this shit last night. Every time i go there 4 guys are always shooting at that cave

Who has the best XBOX 360 trade-in deal?

My 360 is only about 3 1/2 years old, I might trade mine in for the One next month.

Lol, I went from level 9 to 20 doing that in 2 days.. And I'm only on the 2nd mission on Venus

I thought I'd never say this but it's admittely fun "looting" for rare-legendary weapons..

This sums up the loot cave perfectly

Every hour or two, something amazing happens at the Loot Cave. One minute, we're all standing there, shooting the aliens in the cave, business as usual. Then, out of nowhere, a handful of enemies starts attacking from a different direction. This has an effect like staring at a traffic light for two hours, only to see it turn turquoise. What the hell is going on?

In a matter of seconds, an absolute mess of monsters invades the battlefield. They're relentless and overwhelming, and they come from all sides. Our carefully coordinated firing line disperses in all directions, each of us fighting to stay alive amid the chaos. Most of the players who have been shooting into the loot cave have powerful, high-level characters, and the resulting fracas is like seeing three crossover superhero comics scanned onto a single page.

Special powers are detonating left and right, and the shadowy corners of the battlefield explode into the world's most dangerous discotheque. For the next few minutes, Destiny is at its absolute best: Six or more players, working in unison, fighting off a seemingly unstoppable force. No one speaks a word, but everyone knows what to do. They will be sorry they messed with us.

The enemies grow ever-more numerous and powerful, until it almost seems like the game is broken, or bugging out. But eventually, the battle does end. The final enemy vanishes, the final superpower is spent, and silence settles across the field. Without a word, every player lines back up in formation, aims, and begins to shoot into the cave once more.
