Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will play a DC superhero or villain in an upcoming film.

As both Disney and Warner Bros.’ studios continue to expand their respective DC and Marvel cinematic universes, the race is on for each side to stake claim in big recognizable actors to carry future franchises.

“Fast and Furious” franchise star Vin Diesel has already signed onto team Marvel, first with a role in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and more recently hinting at a larger role still to come.

His co-star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has been in talks with DC Comics for some time to work on a film, and it sounds like we’ll finally learn which superhero he will play.

The Associated Press reports Johnson is up for the roles of superhero Shazam and anti-hero Black Adam.

According to AP, it sounds like Johnson has the final say in who he gets to play.

“[He] has yet to decide between superhero Shazam and his arch-nemesis Black Adam.”

The Rock has previously told fans Black Adam is one of his favorite superheroes.

Green Lantern (John Stewart) and Black Adam are my fav superheroes, but GL's already been made and stamped. #RockTalk @CFitzyy

If you’re not familiar with the characters, here’s a quick rundown on the duo.

Shazam

The hero started out as a young orphan named Billy Batson. He was given the ability to transform into an adult superhero by an old wizard (named Shazam) any time he utters the phrase Shazam.

Originally known as Captain Marvel, Shazam is an acronym which stands for the six heroes he gets his powers from: Soloman, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. This allows him to fly, have super strength and speed, among other powers.

If the character seems a bit like the Man of Steel, you’re not alone. The character was deemed so similar to Superman that it resulted in a lawsuit between National Comics (Superman’s distributor) and Fawcett Publications (who ran the then Captain Marvel comics).

The character was later reimagined in the ‘70s as Shazam.

Best known as Shazam’s arch-nemesis, Black Adam is essentially the dark version of the superhero with the same powers. Adam was granted his powers before Shazam and after he finds out about his existence his main goal is to destroy him.

More recently, the character has been written as an anti-hero since his reintroduction to the comics in the '90s.

Black Adam could possibly be for Warner Bros. what Tom Hiddleston’s popular antihero Loki is for Disney and Marvel.

Which role could you see Johnson as?

This movie will be all time great if he pulls off playing a villian against a well cast Billy Watson and Shazam.

And it would be criminal to have him play Shazam and share a scene with Black Adam knowing he is the spitting image of the Black Adam character we have all seen since childhood. :smh:

The Rock Will Play DC Supervillain Black Adam, Archrival of Captain Marvel

After months of speculation, cumbersomely named muscleman Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has made it official: He'll be playing longtime DC Comics supervillain Black Adam onscreen. Sources say he'll be facing off against one of the longest-running superheroes in the comics industry, Shazam (originally — and sometimes still — known as Captain Marvel, though there's always the confusing fact that Marvel Comics has its own character called Captain Marvel ... comics, everybody!) in an upcoming Shazam feature. The Rock made his entry into the superpowered stable known by tweeting thusly:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>&quot;Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot.&quot; My honor to become.. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BlackAdam?src=hash">#BlackAdam</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TheAntiHero?src=hash">#TheAntiHero</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/DCComics?src=hash">#DCComics</a> <a href="http://t.co/Qk55eNf3R7">pic.twitter.com/Qk55eNf3R7</a></p>&mdash; Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) <a href="https://twitter.com/TheRock/status/507189313579122689">September 3, 2014</a></blockquote>

Variety says the Shazam flick will be penned by Jack the Giant Slayer and Turbo scribe Darren Lemke. For those not in the know (which is, basically, everyone): Black Adam was introduced in 1945 as Captain Marvel's dark opposite. Captain Marvel is a little boy named Billy Batson, who has the magical ability to transform into a mighty do-gooder by uttering the magic word, "Shazam!" Like all longstanding comics characters, Adam's origin story and power set have changed a bunch of times, but the basic gist is that he was born in Ancient Egypt and gained magical powers much like the ones Billy Batson would later obtain. He can fly and shoot power bolts and is very moody. He dislikes fun things and likes ruling things. Insert joke about The Scorpion King here.

Rock will make a great villain.

Agreed.

These casting director/s hit a GRAND SLAM by choosing The Rock as Black Adam.

It's a no-brainer, imo... BUT....

They could have EASILY fucked it up, by selecting some 'emo'-type actor.
(Like Hollywood casting agents tend to do.)

Leaving comic book fans scratching their heads. :dunno:

Apparently, someone REAL important at the movie studio probably actually asked a few 'low-level', hipster employees who they think would be BEST as Black Adam (like Jimmy in the mailroom)...

... instead of listening to the advice of their female nail technicians while getting a pedicure, this time around. (who probably never read a comic book in their entire lives )

^^^

:yes::yes::yes:

especially even they make him a villain with a code and sense of morality not TOTALLY evil ...

it would work great cause the Rock could actually STEAL Marvel's shine...no matter who they choose.

Patrick Warburton would make the perfect Captain Marvel, they probably want someone younger though

Agreed...that voice is perfect.
Most of the guys that would be good r too old.
Nathan Fillion and the Brendon Frasier.
Probably gonna end up being Channing Tatum.

Fox grabbed Tatum. He is playing Gambit.

They need that corny old school 1950s hero type, a kid trapped in a mans body child like wonder and awe but still look like the traditional bright and shiny hero no dark modern crap.

I cannot think of who out of this young actors could do it.
Maybe Brandon Rousch the last Superman?
