I understand. I don't know how to describe exactly what I'm feeling. It's a mixture of strong emotions.
As a child in the St. Louis area in the 70s, I was keenly aware of just how fucked up racist the whites in that area were. I spent 6 years there living in 6 different places - attending 5 different schools. The things that I witnessed and that I experienced were scarring and forever shaped my viewpoint on white folks and their ways.
It's no surprise to me that what happened to Michael Brown happened there - in Ferguson. It's even less surprising the way the case has been mishandled and how these Missouri crackas in charge there have been (mis)treating the situation.
I'm proud of my people in that small town. What is happening in Ferguson with those demonstrating and reacting is so vitally important.
It is emblematic of all of us who have been treated as less than who we are by police, all of us who have learned to look at them as entities to be feared and hated due to how they first regarded us. It is emblematic of all the unarmed Brothers and Sisters who have been victims of homicide by cops - while in response the PD's and courts rewarded their murderers with paid vacations and the continuation of their freedom.
This is how they see us.

It's past time for a NEW Civil Rights Movement. Time to finish the job that was started 50+ years ago.
