Sprint is expected to release its second quarter earnings on July 30th, but analysts aren't expecting to hear good things. In fact, three analysts from Jefferies, Mike McCormack, Scott Goldman and Tudor Mustata, forecast that the carrier will report a drop of 879,000 in phone subscribers for the three month period that ended in June. In the face of subscriber additions by Verizon and AT&T announced last week, just what is going on with the nation's third largest carrier?

For some time now, Sprint has blamed the upgrading of its network for the drop in its subscriber rolls. While the mobile operator is finishing the Network Vision update, poor quality service has led large numbers of subscribers to bolt. The trio of Jefferies analysts say that the loss of nearly 900,000 subscribers for the quarter will be among the worst in company history.

The good news is that Sprint could be finished with the modernization of its network by the middle of the year. And once it is done, churn will improve, says the carrier. Sprint has numbers to back that up. In markets where it is 70% complete with the network upgrades, churn has returned to pre-upgrade levels. And in markets where all of the work has ended, churn has dropped below the pre-upgrade level. Thus, Sprint is comfortable with predictions that customer growth will return in the last two quarters of the year.

"While network issues are likely to abate, leading to better churn, we believe it will take years and intense marketing to fix brand perception, pressuring gross add share for a prolonged period. Pricing changes will almost certainly have to be adopted as S(print) remains relatively uncompetitive. Nonetheless, any pricing move will likely elicit an immediate response from competitors, putting S(print) in an unenviable position...over the past couple of years, the fundamental investment thesis for Sprint shares has hinged on future operational improvements. We believe investors are growing increasingly fatigued with the network improvement story, and will begin to assign a more discounted valuation to the shares. In addition, we stress that executing yet another turnaround is increasingly difficult, and will likely take longer as scale erodes and competition intensifies."-Mike McCormack, Scott Goldman and Tudor Mustata, analysts, Jefferies
Of course, there is the possibility that Sprint will offer to buy T-Mobile next month, for $32 billion. The latter has been adding customers thanks to the Pied Piper of mobile, T-Mobile CEO John Legere. Speaking of executives, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse's pay package has received plenty of flak from Institutional Shareholder Services. ISS is a company that suggests to mutual funds and other institutional stock holders, how they should vote their proxies.

ISS says that the $49 million pay that Hesse took home in 2013 was the highest among the executives of the top four mobile carriers, and it has an issue with that paycheck. ISS especially opposes the $18.7 million bonus Hesse received, because it was due to his longevity with the company instead of being performance based. John Legere made $29.2 million, and while that might seem high, if any executive in the industry earned his pay last year, it was the T-Mobile CEO. Legere's number one foil, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, made $23.24 million while Verizon's Lowell McAdam took home $15.82 million. Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead was not listed in the data.

Man fuck sprint. I'm a victim of these so called upgrade problems. I'm leaving in a month when my contract is up

i left sprint in 2005... couldn't take the dropped calls anymore; i could barely hold a conversation. :smh::smh::smh:

i don't know how they've lasted this long... the network is ASS.

fuck sprint... and two more companies that look like sprint. :hmm:

Sprint was good until the Evo 4G hit, the network just couldn't handle it, all down hill from there. Hesse should have long been fired, going with WiMax over LTE was friable offence alone. Sprint was years ahead of the Game on 4G and squandered it.

sprint was talking 4G lte long ago.

and their network STILL ain't shit down here in louisiana; i think they JUST got it up and running... a whole 2 yrs AFTER at&t. :smh::smh::smh:

With that sprint spark bullshit, you can't even use the Internet and talk on the phone anymore. Not once was this ever mentioned when they were hyping this bullshit up

Well I work for Sprint via Ericsson...with that said Mr. Son of Softbank will have to the states and clean house. Some of the work orders I see coming from Sprint will make you do a facepalm. Sprint has gotten better In the A and Miami but they still have a ton of work to do.

I don't know y'all.. I've been with Sprint since 2001--lived in Philly, the A, CT, DMV, been in Charlotte for the last 6 months...other than a dropped call on specific spots on specific roads, haven't really had too many voice issues....the data service does suck sometimes though I will admit

I left Sprint 2 or 3 years ago after their network data coverage sucked so fucking bad I couldn't even stream radio. Not even talking about those idiots trying to outsmart everyone by going with WiMAX over LTE when everyone was going with LTE.

How the fuck is Dan Hesse still their CEO? He's been running that company into the ground for years and they still haven't demanded he resign? Unbelievable

hmmm wonder what their shares are, its definitely a good time to pick up some tmobile..

btw I finally get your sig,

I fuckin LOVE it NOW!

This is going to hurt my yearly bonus :smh:

I expected losses but nothing like 900k.

I've got a feeling Hesse is gone by end of 2014 or before the 1st qtr of 2015 is over.

These numbers can't be blamed on the thinning of Nextel customers like this time last year, this problem falls squarely on the shitty ass network that Sprint operates.

He should have fired Bob Johnson after Sprint decided to switch from Wimax and go with LTE, which should have been done from the jump.

My bonus...

Man fuck sprint. I'm a victim of these so called upgrade problems. I'm leaving in a month when my contract is up

I switched to Verizon earlier this year because of those same problems. Their "upgrade" was taking too damn long.

Fuck sprint. Left those assholes when I couldn't get data on the LIRR. Really!?!?

Jumped to T-Mobile and been happy ever since.

Sent from my Nexus 5

sprint offers unlimited data but that means shit if u can get a signal :smh:

i left them a lil over a year ago. ill never go back. ill stick with att or verizon

I guess I am the only one who likes Sprint. Been with them for about 5 years straight. Unlimited data and less than 80.00 / month bill was the the game changer for me. I leave the crib and I literally keep my rooted wi-fi tethering app on all day, 8 hours + until I get back to the house. Galaxy Note 3. Priceless...

Sprint is still Good If you are in a good area..........I am in line of sight of the cell so my service is great at my house

If this merger goes through, it's already be rumored that T-Mobile's CEO will be retained, not Hess. My contract is up with Sprint now. I'm leaving and am just torn between the G3 or wait for the Note 4.

Hess is going to have a golden parachute with diamonds.

Sprints network is Ass! Ive had them for 8 yrs and honestly, the only reason I stay is because I pay $45 a month for unlimited everything with their Framily plan. I see a few of yall werent liking the Wimax over LTE idea, however, I was able to surf and talk at the same time with Wimax. Not the case with this bullshit LTE. And if what someone said about their new Spark service not being able to deliver that service, Im probably gonna dip. Im still trying to figure out how I can LTE and Wi-Fi both active, yet still my connection speeds are ass. I have to keep refreshing IG pages to get the gotdamn pics to show. Da fucc is that all about?

Sprint is terrible. The 4 G network is absolutly terrible and I live in LA. At LAX the shit constantly switches between 3 and 4G and at home?:lol: I can't even get a 3g signal in the LBC. Once my contract is done, fuck em. I hope the CEO gets shot in the throat!

Sprint is about to buy all those subscribers back when they cop t mobile anyways.

Luckily this time it could work.

T-Mobile would have to run the show but with the spectrum Sprint has and the customer perception of T-Mobile, we could have a viable 3rd carrier.

Softbank ceo already said he wants to start a pricing war and push broadband speeds here.

Mine is cool but I'm in an area where it should be.

My boy off 20 on the other hand the coverage is terrible.

My family back at home in Oklahoma the coverage is even worse.

Not a happy man

He already has a replacement ready.

When the new Iphone drops they are going to lose another million, my contract is up and I'm switching to T Mobile as soon as I can. Like everybody else I think that their service is shitty!

Has Hesse done anything good?

And you'll probably be coming right back to Sprint

And you'll probably be coming right back to Sprint

Nope but he is better then Gary D. Forsee

All depends on who you ask.

For shareholders Hesse has been a god send.

He did what he was brought in to do.

#1 fix customer service (remember when he came Sprint was dead last)

#2 gave the company a vision and some what of a path (had the network upgrade gone smooth he would be a hero right now)

#3 got the iPhone

#4 sold the company

Hesse has done a good job and I don't have an issue with his salary but man o man did he fuck up with letting his network team go about the network upgrades.

I still remember being told that we had no plan b if the network vision didn't go smoothly, and that was three years ago.
