The long-awaited rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, scheduled for UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27, has been postponed after the Swede suffered an injury in training this week. Although there are scores of hungry challengers waiting for a crack at Jones’ crown, few can rival Daniel Cormier's burning desire to topple the champ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

And now that matchup is set. UFC officials made the announcement of the main event switch to Jones vs. Cormier on Wednesday.

The unbeaten Cormier, a two-time Olympic wrestler and former heavyweight contender, has long had his sights set on Jones, with his move to 205 pounds in 2014 predicated on a shot at his longtime rival. Since his move, the 35-year-old Louisiana native has stopped Patrick Cumminsand Dan Henderson, and following his submission of “Hendo” in May, he made no secret of his desire to meet his fellow wrestler as soon as possible.

“Jon Jones, you can’t run away from me forever,” he told commentator Joe Rogan in the Octagon. “I’m the kid at the wrestling tournament that is always in your bracket. No matter where you go, I’m coming. You better hurry because I’m getting better.”

The 27-year-old Jones, champion since 2011, has made a record-setting seven successful title defenses at 205 pounds, with wins over former champions Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida,Rashad Evans, and Vitor Belfort.

In his most recent bout, Jones decisioned Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 in April, and while the plan was for Jones to meet Gustafsson in a rematch of their classic 2013 bout, the champion expressed his desire to fight Cormier first, even before the contracts were signed.

Some fans weren’t happy with that declaration, and Jones took his case to Instagram, saying “Asking for an undefeated Olympic wrestler, Strikeforce champion makes me somehow a coward?”

But after Gustafsson’s unfortunate injury and subsequent removal from the UFC 178 card, both Jones and Cormier will get the fight they wanted all along, and the fans get a fitting main event for a stacked card that also features Irish star Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier, the return ofDominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki, the middleweight showdown between Tim Kennedy andYoel Romero, and Cat Zingano’s comeback bout against Amanda Nunes.

Dangerous match-up. More dangerous than Jones vs. Gustafsson IMO. Not sayin' Jones is scared but I wouldn't be surprised if some phantom injury prevented this fight from happening. Jones has been avoiding this fight. Don't let his instagram messages fool ya'. Cormier is a serious problem.
:scared:

If Cormier ' s acl holds up, I got him taking Jones out. Jones better learn to fight from his back or develop a stiff jab quickly.

I'm thinkin' mabey Cormier chose not to have the surgery. If he did that would sideline him for a couple of months. Besides, I haven't heard any official word of the procedure.

He cant beat jones,

jones will kick the living shit out of his knees every time he tries to move forward.

unlike Gus he doesnt have the reach to stick and move...

I dont see that fight making it to the third round

but of course you can never count out that puncher chance

and that dude cormier got more than a few punchs chances in him..

should be great match up for fans,

but I got Jones wining by tko or submission in the second or early third...

I think Gus a little nervous, now, he doesnt have that advantage anymore..

and his way of beating jones is one dimensional....

He just going to try and mongoose Jones the whole fight..

and you cant be running away from the champ and expect to get the belt..

even in the eurocentric ufc, that shit will get called out on..

The more Jones tries to kick DC, the more he opens himself up to be taken down. If he cclinches with him, he'll be taken down. Jones has to jab and jab some more or fight off his back. That's his only options.

this will be most interesting. Jones has never face a guy with Daniels power. He also has great conditioning for someone with his build.

Jones-Gus II was gonna be a good fight
Jones-DC is gonna be a good fight
Unfortunate that Gus is out w/ an injury
Thankfully the main event wasn't scrapped
Thankfully Gus' replacement DC is legit, and not just some coffee barista like when Pat Cummins stepped up to fight DC months ago and lost in 2 minutes

But if he needed it, it's huge for the fight. His team must be confident he can get Jones.

Puts Gus in a tough place too as he's dealing with the injury ... and IF DC can pull off the victory over Jones ... there'll be an automatic rematch in place in the first half of 2015 or so. With Jones having been champ for 3+ years now with numerous title defenses along the way.

Hopefully the betting odds have D.C. as the underdog cause that's who I'm putting my money on :hellyea:

This was the better fight in the first place.

Yeah - gonna be a really interesting match-up. I'd hoped the Jones-Gus II fight would have happened sooner too. Too much delay between Sept. 2013 - Sept. 2014. The Gustaffson-Minuwa fight a few months back was just to keep Gus' busy and get him a paycheck & a fight in front of his home crowd.

I got DC for the decision win unless he gets to agressive, and gets cough, in a submission, ala Fedor vs Wverdum. They both will be facing the best fighters they ever fought.

Now we're talking! No rematch, no bullshit like Sonnen cause he talked his way into a fight...Let's get it D.C. It will be an all time upset and not so much an upset at the same time if he can pull this off...based on the reach factor alone.

I love this... can't wait! Isn't this the fight Jones wanted but the powers that be wanted the great white hype?

I've thought about this fight. I don't see how DC wins. For DC to win he needs to close the distance. I'm sure if he can clinch with Jones he's going to send jones flying. Jones usually will avoid grappling with strong wrestlers he may get a greco or judo throw, but he won't get into scrambles(see Rashad fight). DC will keep him at a distance and pepper him away. The fighters with the style to beat jones are far and few in between. To beat jones I would suggest a very strong BJJ or catch wrestler fighter who is very aggressive with submission from any position(no one fills this role). Or a strong brute with insane athleticism who can KO jones and is hard to take down and hard to KO(Anthony Rumble Johnson).

Bruh...DC made Henderson look like an amateur.......:smh:

Not sure about that, but Gus ended up being the real deal.
The real deal, how? He lost. 2nd place is 1st loser. I'd say he was the real deal had he won, but this isn't Rocky. You don't get brownie points for overachieving above expectations of being blown out. Only in UFC's WWE-like marketing universe is Gus the people's champ and deserving of a quick rematch. Otherwise, to be the man you have to beat the man.
