Rockets decline team options on Troy Daniels, Chandler Parsons; Francisco Garcia opts out

The Rockets’ offseason will be a series of small moves that may or may not culminate in Houston adding a third star to play with Dwight Howard and James Harden.
Opportunities to increase cap space and landmines that could destroy it are tied to so many players on Houston’s roster. Even how a few marginal Rockets are handled could make the difference.
Three of those moves, including the expected decline of Chandler Parsons’ option, have broken.

The Rockets are showing a lot of trust in Parsons, and to a lesser degree, Daniels.
Parsons could nuke Houston’s cap space any time once free agency begins by signing an offer sheet with another team. The Rockets would likely match and keep Parsons, but his cap hit would immediately jump to his 2014-15 salary (likely around $10 million per year). Right now, he counts just $2,875,130 against the cap.

Daniels could accept his qualifying offer – a one-year contract worth $1,016,482 – at any time. Had Houston simply exercised his team option, he would have made just $816,482.

Unless the Rockets are gung-ho about securing such a marginal player on a multi-year deal, they’ll likely pull his qualifying offer and maybe renounce him just before signing a quality free agent. In the meantime, the qualifying offer serves to cool other interested teams. In exchange for waiting to sign, I bet Daniels will get a larger salary – either through the room exception or non-bird exception.

Garcia is doing Houston a favor. He was slated to make a minimum salary, so his only risk in opting out is not getting a new contract. If he plays next year, his salary can be no lower than what he would have made by opting in. The Rockets, who could use his salary off the books while they pursue bigger fish, likely promised him a roster spot next season if he opts out. They can always go over the cap later to give him a minimum deal.

Essentially, Houston is placing some value in keeping Parsons and Daniels beyond next season. That might hinder the Rockets’ attempts to sign a star, but if they trust Parsons and Daniels, it won’t. It’s really in the players’ hands whether, and to what degree, this backfires.

With these moves, if the Rockets renounce Garcia and Jordan Hamilton, waive Omri Casspi, Robert Covington and Josh Powell (each on fully unguaranteed contracts) and take back no guaranteed salary in the Omer Asik trade, they’d fall $7,928,630 below the projected salary cap.
Pulling Daniels’ qualifying offer when the time comes would add
$509,146 in cap room. Houston could do the same with Parsons, though that’s riskier given the demand for his services, and get an extra $2,367,794 in cap room.

Really, the Rockets are inching away from maximizing their cap space, though Garcia at least helped the situation from flowing completely negative. Houston still has a lot of flexibility, though, and a Jeremy Lin trade could be the next shoe to drop. If that happens, maybe that means the Rockets are willing to lose Parsons and/or Daniels.

They’re on the clock to figure that out – essentially what it would take to land a star – before Parsons and Daniels are ready to get paid.

Bosh opts out; Heat summer of renovation about to begin

560x388.jpg

The Miami Heat picked the perfect time to renovate their locker-room facilities at AmericanAirlines Arena. The roster is practically barren.
The hope is that the upgraded accommodations will next host an upgraded outlook.

Sunday formally allowed the Heat to at least temporarily remove Chris Bosh's nameplate, with the forward's representative informing Heat President Pat Riley that Bosh was invoking his early-termination option and stepping away from the final two years on the free-agent contract he signed with the Heat in July 2010.
Bosh's announcement came a day after Heat guard Dwyane Wade made a similar move and four days after Heat forward LeBron James opted out of the final two years of his contract.
For now, it makes the Heat's Big Three the Big Free, with NBA free agency opening Tuesday.

Whether the Heat stars actually dip their toes into any other free-agent waters is another question, with the lockstep moves indicating a willingness by the three to work with Riley to revamp a roster that ran out of steam in falling 4-1 to the San Antonio Spurs earlier this month in the NBA Finals.

As he did when James, Wade and Heat power forward Udonis Haslem removed themselves from the team's books, Riley issued a forward-thinking statement upon Bosh's Sunday announcement.
"Today," Riley said, "we were notified of Chris' intentions to opt-out of his contract. Chris is one of the most versatile and dynamic big men in this league, and he has been an instrumental key to our championship success over the last four seasons. We look forward to meeting with Chris and his agent in the coming days to discuss keeping him in Miami for many years to come."
Both before and after the Heat's demise against the Spurs, each of the Heat's stars spoke of bolstering the team to contend for years to come. With their decisions, they have eased the salary-cap and luxury-tax burdens on Riley, while also putting the team on the clock in free agency.
While the free-agency negotiating period begins July 1, teams cannot sign free agents until July 10.
For the moment, the only players under contract to the Heat are guard Norris Cole and rookie center Justin Hamilton, whose contact does not become partially guaranteed until Aug. 1. The upshot is an NBA-record $55 million in salary-cap space and other salary-cap exceptions for Riley to utilize in a makeover anticipated to retain James, Bosh and Wade as the focus.
Bosh lagged in his decision behind his star teammates due to a procedural matter, in the end opting out of $42.6 million otherwise due over the next two seasons, the same amount James bypassed.
For years, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has been referencing Stephen E. Ambrose's Band of Brothers military history as a theme for his roster, with passages from the book featured in the hallway leading to the Heat locker room. While that locker room now is being remodeled, the Heat's roster overhaul will require a similar theme.
James, Wade and Bosh already have strategized collectively about their next Heat contracts and their desires for the front office's objectives. While outside teams have cleared cap space in case any of the Heat stars decide to leave -- with that external focus primarily on James and Bosh -- none of the Heat free agents have spoken of taking such meetings.
The NBA typically frowns on salary collusion, but the collective approach by James, Wade and Bosh does not violate any NBA policies.
Depending on Riley's approach, the Heat either could pool their newly minted salary-cap space for a single A-list free agent along the lines of Carmelo Anthony or Kyle Lowry, or could utilize a variety of machinations to add a variety of supporting players.
The Heat's strategies are expected to leave open the door for returns by guard Ray Allen and center Chris Andersen, but invitations could require salary concessions by those and others who finished this past season on the roster.
The Heat also hold the rights to first-round pick Shabazz Napier, the guard out of UConn taken with the No. 24 selection in Thursday's NBA Draft, and 2013 second-round acquisition James Ennis, an athletic swingman out of Long Beach State who spent this past season in Australia and Puerto Rico.
Amid the free-agency backdrop, the Heat open a summer camp for young prospects this week in Orlando before beginning play Saturday at the Orlando summer league.

All I'm saying is either move Lebron to the pg or let the point do their job.
It's really simple...How u let Wade right the offense and don't let Chamlers do his job.
That could've been part of the problem with Rio.

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

I like Vince

Nelson ain't gonna start unless the heat miss out on Lowry

Ok I like this

Neither will help with the youth movement, but their price tags probably very affordable. I'm looking for a very capable backup for Wade, is Vince that?

How Will Miami Heat Spend Record $55 Million Cap Space After Big 3 Opt-Out?

hi-res-5507755becaf3dd74edd4b3c626cd1f8_crop_north.jpg

Dominoes are dropping, and the wheels are officially in motion for the retooling—possibly rebuilding—Miami Heat.

LeBron James started the party earlier this week, opting out of the two years left on his contract with the four-time NBA Finalists. Udonis Haslem followed suit Saturday, as reported by Bleacher Report's Ethan Skolnick:

"Ethan J. Skolnick ✔ @EthanJSkolnick
Follow
Udonis Haslem has opted out of his contract
9:42 AM - 28 Jun 2014"

Dwyane Wade was next to fall in line, via Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press:

"Tim Reynolds ✔ @ByTimReynolds
Follow
Dwyane Wade has opted out.
2:23 PM - 28 Jun 2014"

Heat team president Pat Riley confirmed the moves in an issued team statement, calling Wade "the cornerstone of our organization for over a decade" and Haslem "the heartbeat of this team."

ESPN's Chris Broussard reported that Chris Bosh also opted out of his deal, although Joseph Goodman of the Miami Herald heard that nothing has been decided yet:

Assuming Bosh opts out as expected, Miami's offseason buying power will be maximized:

The question now becomes how the Heat will spend all this money.

The first step of that plan involves the likely re-signing of all the players who just opted out of their deals. Opting out was a necessary step for the franchise to create enough financial flexibility for the front office to make roster improvements.

All of these players could return, potentially on longer contracts with lower annual salaries.

"The idea of them all taking $15 million a year on five year, $75 million deals has been floated," NBC Sports' Kurt Helin noted. "...Riley would be roughly $15 million under the cap to go chase name free agents."

How likely is that $15 million figure? Well, it depends on which member of the Big Three you're talking about.

That's exactly the type of deal that Broussard's source said Bosh is after. It's also in line with the four-year, $60 million contract a Wade associate told the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson that the veteran guard "would be receptive to considering."

It remains to be seen if James is willing to take the same approach.

Sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports that James "is seeking a full maximum contract extension – or something close to it – to stay with Miami." The full max offer he could receive from the Heat is a five-year, $130 million deal.

While he's certainly worth that money (and more), he would be hindering Miami's ability to upgrade the roster by taking it. That's where this decision is pulling him in different directions.

He's reportedly still hoping to stay in South Beach, but sources told Wojnarowski that "a failure by the organization toward improving the Heat's roster to his satisfaction could send him aggressively into free agency."

If his desire is to stay, though, he might have to leave some money on the table. Considering Forbes has him collecting $42 million in endorsements alone this year, he could make up that difference elsewhere—provided the Heat give him a reason to take less than the max.

For Riley, he'll look at the free-agent market and examine his chance to make a significant splash. Given his history and imagination, he'll chase the biggest fish he can:

That will mean first taking a long look at James' buddy and fellow free agent, Carmelo Anthony. ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein reported in mid-June that the Heat have been exploring the possibility of adding the scoring machine.

Financially speaking, it's not impossible, but all members of this potential Big Four would have to make major sacrifices. ESPN Insider Amin Elhassan (subscription required) said each player could take a four-year, $58.8 million deal, which would include a $13.8 million salary for next season.

That's a lot of cash for each player to give up, probably too much.

If the Heat can't get Anthony, who would they pursue?

Kyle Lowry, who had a near All-Star season for the Toronto Raptors in 2013-14, could be next on Riley's list.

Even after landing Shabazz Napier on draft night, the Heat could still use a point guard capable of relieving the ball-handling responsibilities that James has carried. Lowry is also a strong defender, so James wouldn't have to worry about the tough assignments that Mario Chalmers struggled with this past season.

Windhorst said "mutual interest" exists between Heat and Lowry, via CBS Sports' Matt Moore, so the point guard might be willing to take less than the market will offer in order to improve his championship odds.

Forwards Luol Deng and Trevor Ariza could also be options if Lowry proves to be out of Miami's price range. They would both add needed athleticism to Miami's perimeter, and each has shown the ability to space the floor. Neither wing would come cheap, although they could leave enough room for the team to address some other needs.

Despite Miami's four straight trips to the NBA Finals, this roster has plenty of holes. As Elhassan noted, "the main goals should be to upgrade point guard, upgrade center, add another high-level wing defender."

Finding cheap bigs won't be easy, but players like Ekpe Udoh, Jason Smith and Kevin Seraphin could fall within the Heat's price range. Channing Frye would be more expensive and doesn't offer a lot in terms of rim protection, but he'd give coach Erik Spoelstra another big man with range.

Miami could look for more shooters on the wings, too, even if Ray Allen returns. Vince Carter could be a possibility if he goes ring chasing, but even a specialist gunner like Anthony Morrow would make some sense.(I've thought about this)

Expect Riley to pursue the big-ticket items, especially if James makes it clear that's what he wants. However, Miami's best move might be spreading out this money to a couple of different free agents.

Most of that $55 million will be earmarked for James, Wade and Bosh. Some of it should go to a second-tier target like Lowry, Deng or even Pau Gasol. Whatever is left should go toward building depth, a process that most likely entails bringing back several reserves from this past season's team.

The Heat just need to strengthen their championship blueprint, not draw up a completely new one. As long as the Big Three give Riley enough money to work with, he'll put it to good use.

Kyrie signing the max extension is shocking to me. I really thought he wouldve been on a first plane ticket out of Cleveland once his rookie deal was up. He couldve easily been picked up by some big name team in some big time city...but he chose to stay dedicated to the team that drafted him..

Thats rare..............
Props to him

Wiggins seems more arrogant (from what ive seen on the court). I wonder if he'll stay put once his rookie deal is up.

Report: LeBron, Wade, Bosh give Riley window to upgrade roster, contract frameworks

LeBron James has made it clear he wants help on the Miami Heat’s roster and he wants to see ownership spend to do it. He opted out early in part to put pressure on the Heat organization — upgrade this roster or I look at my options.
Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are with him.
The three of them are going to lay back at the start of free agency and let Pat Riley recruit guys, but they are giving him contract frameworks to make that possible, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
As Miami Heat president Pat Riley begins to pursue free agency at 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday, LeBron James and his Big Three teammates plan to give the franchise a window to recruit a supporting cast and close deals with them, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Heat’s free agents – James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem – have the framework of deals in place to remain with Miami, arming Riley with his limitations within the salary cap to sign talent, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
“Everybody has their [contract] number and has left a little bit of room to let [Riley] maneuver,” one source briefed on the contract discussions told Yahoo Sports.
With those three guys opting out the Heat have roughly $55 million in cap space, but the Heat do not have that cap space to play with, the Heat have cap holds for all three of those players for what they would make with a standard raise. Essentially, Riley’s hands are tied, he is over the cap line.
However, if they all gave him frameworks and left some on the table Riley will know what he has to spend — PBT has heard he has made offers to people in the $6-7 million range, which could be money is has under the cap to spend and/or part of the mid-level exception (which is expected to be $5.3 million a year or a little higher to start).
The question remains how much of a salary reduction Wade and Bosh are willing to take (LeBron wants a max or close to it). What LeBron in particular is doing is putting pressure on owner Micky Arison, who has said he would spend to keep this team competitive and together. LeBron wants to see that action.
If you think this gives you hope your team is going to land LeBron, don’t bet on it. Players will go to Miami to be part of a title run in a popular city (and a state with no sales tax). LeBron still isn’t taking meetings with teams.
He’s just going to wait a bit and see how things play out.

Heat Making Calls

The Heat was active at the start of free agency tonight, expressing strong interest in Kyle Lowry and Luol Deng, as expected, even though other teams are in position to make far bigger offers.

Lowry reportedly could get a deal for more than $12 million per season, with incumbent Toronto and Houston and Dallas among those also in pursuit. The Heat and Lowry will speak further in the morning, Yahoo! reports.

Deng has several suitors with cap space, including Dallas and Atlanta.

Other names linked to Miami in the first hour of free agency included Marvin Williams, Vince Carter, Washington forward Trevor Booker and Sacramento restricted free agent guard Isaiah Thomas, among others.
