Hawks trade Lou Williams, Lucas Nogueira to Raptors for John Salmons
Yahoo Sports By Adrian Wojnarowski 22 minutes ago
The Atlanta Hawks are clearing salary cap space for free agency, trading away Lou Williams and 2013 first-round pick Lucas Nogueira to Toronto Raptors for John Salmons, a leagues sources told Yahoo Sports.

Salmons has a $7 million team option for the 2014-15 season, which the Hawks will terminate with a $1 million buyout on Monday, league sources said.

Williams gives the Raptors a veteran guard and some depth and insurance should they fail to re-sign free agent guard Kyle Lowry. Nogueira, a 7-foot Brazilian, was the 16th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft, and played in the Spanish ACB League this season. He's a young, active center who's considered a long-term project.

Williams sheds another $5.4 million off the Hawks' payroll for the 2014-15 season.

I'll take Vaquez in Miami...

It's probably safe to say, Norris Cole ain't going to the Raptors...

Hawks trade will reportedly give them over $15M in cap room. Hornets have plenty of space, but they're far from alone that way.

Damn the Nets just can't get right....

If Jason Kidd leaves, some Nets players may go, too

Done with his wheeling and dealing on the night of the NBA draft, Billy King explained the usual agenda that leads into the free-agency frenzy.

"It's always a two-part,'' the Nets general manager said Thursday at Barclays Center. "You have the draft and then you go right into that.

"As soon as I finish here, we'll start talking about that right now [with Nets chairman Dmitry Razumov]. Guys that didn't get drafted, maybe bring them to summer league. The plan of attack for guys come July 1.''

The blueprint might have to be altered, though, given the stunning news that Jason Kidd is on the verge of being a one-and-done coach. It has the potential to shake things up quite a bit as free agency looms at midnight Tuesday, creating serious uncertainty about whether the Nets are going to be able to retain any of their own key unrestricted free agents.

They want to bring back Paul Pierce, Shaun Livingston and Alan Anderson, but with Kidd apparently headed for the door, it might give the players reason to search for better situations elsewhere.

If the Lakers aren't able to sign Melo, they're targeting Trevor Ariza, Kyle Lowry, Greg Monroe, and Channing Frye.

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

Hawks have a lot of cap room

But who wants to go there?

Was a mistake letting a young Ariza go and getting Ron Ron in the first place.

I'd be ok with everyone besides Frye

D'Antoni would have loved him, but we could just bring back the dookie Kelly.

Letting Ariza go for a damn near already broken down Ron Artest was a clear mistake

I think Ron got damn near the same contract Ariza got with Houston

They won a title with Ron.

Don't remember game 7? Or how about his style of physical defense having an impact during the finals?

They won a title with Ariza too though

And Ron is done while Ariza still playing well

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

I thing going to LA fucked Ron's offensive effectiveness up..

He did

Ariza's agent played coy with the offer, and they knew they had Ron so they just signed him instead of playing the negotiating game. Ariza said he didn't even know about the offer from his agent.

I guess they figured they only needed him for two years anyway.

Ariza had more of an impact on that title than Ron did

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

It's possible that the Heat could avoid the luxury tax...

As expected, Chris Bosh is opting out of the last two years and $42.6 million of his contract, agent Henry Thomas told The Herald earlier today.

That means the Heat has $55 million in cap space entering the start of free agency on Tuesday. As we noted last week, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade have discussed how much each of them would take but reached no definitive agreement regarding specific numbers over salads on Wednesday.
But they do want to stay together in Miami and are working toward that end. Discussions are ongoing. Udonis Haslem also plans to stay, with a multiyear contract including a first year salary expected to fall between $2 million and $3 million.
If they sacrifice a lot of money --- with James earning the most of the three next season --- they could clear the $8 million to $10 million needed to make a competitive offer for one of the high-end free agents, including Kyle Lowry, Trevor Ariza, Pau Gasol, Marcin Gortart and Luol Deng.

Under that scenario, the Heat also would have a $2.7 million room salary cap exception.
If they take only small cuts, the Heat instead could use its $5.3 million non taxpayers mid-level exception and a $2.2 million trade exception and a $2 million bi-annual exception OR limited cap space but would not be able to use cap space AND the three aforementioned exceptions.

Those mid-level, bi-annual and trade exceptions cannot be combined.
And if the Heat uses its mid-level exception, Miami could not use the room salary cap exception in that scenario and would have not nearly as good a chance of luring a high-level free agent.
For example, Deng's agent has said there is no chance Deng would consider coming to Miami for that $5.3 million mid-level amount, though he likes the Heat.

A player such as Darren Collison or Paul Pierce or Kirk Hinrich could come using some of the $5.3 million in that scenario, unless Gasol is willing to take the $5.3 million. But Gasol assuredly will get higher offers than that.
Under either scenario, the Heat could sign as many players as it wants to the league minimum. And if its uses the mid-level exception scenario, instead of using cap room, it could use its Bird Rights to re-sign Ray Allen and Chris Andersen to contracts above the minimum.

The Heat is positioned not to have to pay a luxury tax under either scenario.

Of Bosh's expected opt out, Pat Riley said: "Chris is one of the most versatile and dynamic big men in this league, and he has been an instrumental key to our championship success over the last four seasons. We looked forward to meeting with Chris and his agent in the coming days to discuss keeping him in Miami for many years to come."

I'm not going to continue to debate it because your argument is valid. I just like that Ron Artest won a title, and in the fashion he did so.

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

Ariza wanted to. Ron got the same deal Ariza got, so they could've had him.

Ariza wanted to stay, he's from LA

They brought essentially the same deal to Ariza that they brought to Ron.

Ariza's agent thought he could get more money, because of him having a good playoffs, and didn't even bring the offer to Ariza per Ariza.

The Lakers brought Ron the same deal shortly thereafter, and he took it.

Ariza got a similar deal with Houston, but he wanted to stay with the Lakers.

Did he fire his agent?

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

Did he fire his agent?

Apparently he didn't until last year

I just googled to remember more information

Apparently Toronto offered 5 years and 42, and his agent went back to the Lakers saying you aren't offering enough, because they wanted 7 or 8 a year...so the Lakers signed Ron for the same 5 year 33 mil they offered.

Then Trevor went to Houston talking about being respected, but the Lakers offered him the same mid level. :smh:
