Report: Udonis Haslem opts out to help Heat gain flexibility

Udonis Haslem will opt out, then return to Miami reportedly. (USATSI)

Earlier this month, the Miami Herald reported that Udonis Haslem planned to opt in for the last year of his contract at $4.62 million for next season. But that was before everything that happened in the Finals and with the Heat finding themselves in a competitive environment to retain LeBron James and get back to a championship level. Bleacher Report reports that Haslem has opted out and will be a free agent on Tuesday, but that the move is to help the Heat gain flexibility to improve.

Haslem, so long a big part of the Heat's culure and on-court approach, completly faded from the rotation last year. He averaged just 3.8 points and 3.4 rebounds last season in just 46 games, then appeared in just six playoff games, averaging 10.6 minutes.

In previous years, he was the tough difference maker that Erik Spoelstra turned to when all other options in the frontcourt failed. But now he's mostly a figure kept for locker room presence and "in case of emergency, break glass" status. But he means more for Miami than to any other team, and he's been with the Heat his entire career. So he's a free agent come July 1, but should be back in the red and black very soon.

Clippers aren't going to pick up Willie Green's option for $1.4 million. His contract wasn't guaranteed. Clips want to resign Green, source

Green was one of the best-liked players in the Clipper locker room and was constantly praised for his professionalism

Smart move by Haslem

I don't think Haslem would still be in the league if was with any other team

but IMO it might be a better move to go after Patric Young who went undrafted and is a newer model :dunno:

Cats mad now saying its unethical for these dudes to be taking less.

The system is predicated on young brothers bein slaves to the dollar, tryin to get all the jew money they can. If you take that away, then you take away control.

He actually had a offer from Denver and turned down nearly double what he got from Miami to stay there a few years ago. Hes nearly worthless on the court but if anyone "deserves" to be taken care of its him. Give him a three year 9million deal and buy him out after two.

Knicks expected to make a run at Pau Gasol
The Knicks are expected to make a run at unrestricted free agent Pau Gasol in free agency next month.
They're going to be a little tight on cap space, but they really need a center after trading away Tyson Chandler and only getting back Samuel Dalembert. The interest in Gasol isn't a surprise considering he's done well in the triangle offense and his ability to pass out of the post. The Bulls, Rockets, Mavericks and Lakers are all expected to make a run at the 30-year-old big man.

I don't think anyone thinks it's unethical

and I think you have it backwards

It's about being loyal to an organization when you're a piece of meat to the owners...that's why people have a problem with it. Your shelf life is short, and an organization will trade you in a minute.

Look at Joel Anthony

as long as the organization proves as loyal to you as you are to them, which is rare.

Stan Van Gundy says SG/SF is priority for FA
Coach Stan Van Gundy said shooting guard and small forward are his team's priority in free agency.
"We know exactly who we want to talk to [in free agency] on July 1," Van Gundy said. SVG might as well be inheriting a baseball team because the Pistons are not what he's used to outside of a dominant big man like Andre Drummond. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Pistons left Greg Monroe walk in order to get some perimeter scoring.

Yeah. He's a lifer... and he definitely wouldn't be playing for anyone else.

Who did I say dont take a paycut to?

I applaud Timmy for ONLY makin 8 mill this year and winning a title.

When Kobe got his $$$, I didnt hate or say he was wrong, I congratulated. That was his choice.

If cats want to make as much as they can thats great, but if its bigger than just money, thats great too.

LeBron is a once in a generation talent and a proven champion, we shouldnt be shocked players would be willing to take less to play with him. Its called LEADERSHIP.

So now people who root against Miami everytime are so concerned about their financial welfare? Yall want them to break the team up because your squads cant seem to do it for them.

Would be nice to see the rubber match... Spurs vs Heat III.

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

Bill Simmons needs to chill. There's not a 5 or point guard out there that could help the Heat beat the Spurs. Let Heat do whatever they want. If they still gonna have Bosh shooting J's and Wade being the focal point of the offense than bandwagon Heat fans gonna cry in the car.

Who are some names out there? Most of the good free agents I saw are restricted free agents and their teams can match any contract they get. Heat might have to overpay to get some dudes.

And for a team that doesn't want to pay the luxury tax? Gonna be interesting to see the approach the Heat take.

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

Brian Windhorst @WindhorstESPN
Chris Bosh plans opt out of contract, source tells ESPN. Dwyane Wade & Udonis Haslem also out per reports. Heat have record 55M cap space

But LeBron reportedly wants a Max deal or close to it = 23 - 26 million a year. That leaves 29 - 32 million.
Bosh reportedly wants 15/16 million a year. That leaves - assuming he takes 15 - 14 million in caps pace, without Wade on the books.

How will it all work.. With trying to add pieces?

Edit I see now ...James is eligible to sign a five-year, $130 million extension with the Heat.

Yep. He caved in.:smh: This is a bold move that I didn't believe would happen. Risking his livelihood and guaranteed fortunes on a gamble. Lebron has to stay now. Still have to see how if works out for them when the dust settles.

Y'all can celebrate, today.:hmm:

Re: ~*~2014 NBA OffSeason Thread - Draft 6/26 ~*~

great trade IMO. what was the downside? i'll wait.

they didn't want a first cause that is guaranteed btw. you could say it was pointless but it didn't hurt at all.

Nothing was wrong with the trade other than it shouldn't have been been necessary cuz he should have still been on a team

My point is you not going to shut up knowledgeable fans righting a wrong and that's all you do

Got to do more

Significantly more
