Luis Suarez ban leads Uruguay coach to quit FIFA position
Oscar Tabarez says striker being made a 'scapegoat'

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez quit FIFA's strategic committee on Friday in protest at the ban football's governing body imposed on his team's star striker Luis Suarez for biting an Italian player.

Tabarez used the mandatory pre-match media event to make an often rambling 15-minute speech with no mention of the game on Saturday, when Uruguay faces Colombia in the Round of 16.

In his monologue, Tabarez blamed English-speaking media for creating pressure on the FIFA disciplinary panel to punish Suarez. He hinted that Uruguay, perhaps as a small country, was being singled out.

"It is not wise, at least it is not prudent to be in an organization with people who exerted pressure in order to promote this decision," Tabarez said.

He said those who punished Suarez had "values that are very different from those that I believe I have."

FIFA's panel banned Suarez for nine international matches and four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in a group-stage match on Tuesday. Uruguay won 1-0 to advance.

It's the third time Suarez has been punished for biting an opposing player on the field — the previous two suspensions were imposed by the Dutch and English leagues.

Tabarez said Suarez was being made a "scapegoat."

"Who wins, who loses? Who benefits, who is harmed? Who ended up getting things their way?" the coach said in Spanish.
Expecting discipline

Tabarez said Uruguay's staff and players had been expecting some action against Suarez but were stunned by the severity.

"We never thought or expected what we found out when we were told about the details of the punishment — of an excessive severity," he said. "The decision was much more focused on the opinions of the media, and that media attacked immediately at the conclusion of the match. ... I don't know what their nationality was, but they all spoke English."

Tabarez, 67, a former member of coaching advisory groups at FIFA tournaments, said he must also leave those positions with the sport's governing body.

The FIFA strategic committee is chaired by FIFA President Sepp Blatter and deals with "global strategies for football and its political, economic and social status."

It meets no more than twice a year and has largely symbolic status within FIFA.

Tabarez left the news conference after his statement and did not take questions. No Uruguay player attended, which is a breach of FIFA's World Cup guidelines.

He had earlier wrapped up by talking about Suarez "the person," and said he was not suggesting the Liverpool star should not be punished.

"But always, always one must give an opportunity to the one that makes a mistake," he said.

Good ol Ann Coulter. Giving education a bad name since the day she was able to speak.

In the midst of the world's World Cup joy, the conservative ripped the sport on her website, writing "any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay."

one with US winning is my heart. Brazil winning is my head with a little heart mixed in at the end. I can realistically see them pulling it off at home, AND it would be kinda fun.

EDIT.... In the bracket where Brazil wins, I didn't mean to pick US over ARG

 Nice.

I teetered with Nigeria beating France as well, but ended up with the Blues advancing.

I actually have the US with the shock win over Argentina, (homer logic I know) only to lose to my favorites to win the tournament, the Oranje.

I usually don't root of the US when it comes to internation competition but been out with my blue/red/white on cheering the boys this year.

I say Bradley should sit vs. Belgium and Zusi needs to be taken off corners. The man is just over shooting those corners....I have no idea what he's doing with them. But definitely keep Jones in an attacking position. Good things happen when he's going forward.

He's actually a decent crosser of the ball through open play, and has put in a couple of good balls that led to goals during qualifiers, so I get why Klinnsman has him on corner duty, but you're right, he's been over or under shooting the mark at times during this tournament. :smh:

Has to get better against Belgium with Fellaini lurking around that box.

A lot of people are putting Chile as the winner in today's contest.

Will be interesting to say the least.

I don't think Brazil looks that good. Neymar is playing well but their backside defense is looking soft. Brazilians aren't very confident either but I think they do expect to beat Chile....but I think Chile and Colombia are playing better than Brazil right... but it could be a mental thing too... Chile has never defeated the Brazilian team in Brazil.

Most likely this.

It could just be me, but there seems to be a lack of cutting edge or flair from this Brazilian side. I don't know if it's a changing of the guard scenario, to where yesterday's Dinho's and Kaka's are no more, and they've traded down for the grit of Paulinho and Oscar (no disrespect to either), but I dunno... I feel like it's missing something. That Joga Bonito factor.

And defensively for Brazil, who would've thought that when we look at:

Dani Alves - - Thiago Silva - - David Luiz - - Marcelo

... in defense, that it would be suspect.:eek:

We know Sanchez & Vargas are gonna get one of those 4 often. My guess is Silva, but we'll see.

I'm also really curious to see the battle between Oscar and Aranguiz. For me, the winner of that contest may determine this match with Vidal and Neymar being able to break forward from their performances.

It's not just you. They're definitely lacking something. I think it's the lack of a creative midfielder..like you said..no Ronaldinho there or anyone with that type of skill set.

and to the other point..yeah I thought the defense was going to be the strong part.

I think individually, Paulinho and Hulk are the weak points. Paulinho is just playing like shit and shouldn't be starting and Hulk maybe hasn't recovered from him injury because he looks bad too. When they put in Fernandinho for Paulinho the team looked much different.

Exactly. Oscar is a great player, but I don't think he's as creative as his predecessors in central midfield.

Hulk looks atrocious at times. :smh: Something has to be off with him cause he looks a shell of his former self.

Paulinho has been MIA as well. Fernandinho and Gustavo to start today perhaps?

Whether or not Suarez's punishment is excessive, he could've avoided all this by just NOT FUCKIN BITING PEOPLE smh

Many are suggesting that he needs mental and psychological help, but in his words:

"these things happen in football, and we should not be speaking of them..."

If dude doesn't see him biting people as a problem, there's no helping his ass. :smh::smh:

Nah,we have destroying ourselves long before this world cup thing...

As for football...it probably has become more popular.

I think it's moved into being like olympic figure skating...

People will watch the world cup every four years, but not really care about the sport in between.

I've said the same thing. These things only seem to happen in football when he's playing. I mean such an effort has to be made to bite somebody

Suarez is an all time bitch...his lies are, like him....a disgrace.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Luis Suarez told FIFA's disciplinary panel that he did not deliberately bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

The Uruguay striker wrote in Spanish that "in no way it happened how you have described, as a bite or intent to bite."

The player's defence is in paragraph six of FIFA's ruling, which has been seen by The Associated Press.

Suarez wrote: "After the impact... I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment I hit my face against the player, leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth."

But the seven-man panel ruled that the bite was "deliberate, intentional and without provocation."

Suarez was banned for nine Uruguay matches and from all football for four months -- a punishment the Uruguayan FA has said it will appeal against.

The striker has returned to Uruguay after having his World Cup accreditation revoked and being banned from the team hotel by FIFA.
