Google doesn't like to employ black people

what's the way out?

Why don't you develop a bigger and better search engine than Google!

They only employ 2% blacks

I guess Silicon Valley is still no go for blacks

whats the way out?

From my limited experience with their process they don't really do the 'diversity' thing heavy... Oh they'll show up to a few 'diversity events' (always low-key), but they're looking for 'top students' (academically and pedigree). Unfortunately there are not a lot of blacks with those academic/pedigrees... Of those few blacks (although I know Google is in high demand for a significant percentage of people in general) don't think everyone wants to work for Google--I sure didn't/dont... It seems like 'Silicon Valley' in general, likes to take Google's approach to things... Any slights/disadvantages one may have had prior to applying/showing up is dismissed...

Blacks are also about those few percentage points in most other 'high demand'/ 'competitive'/'meritofratic' positions--for various reasons...

See: Investment Banking/Sales and Trading/Private Equity (less)/Venture Capital (less)/Investment Management/etc...

Shouldn't you post links and info if you want to engage in a conversation about this?

Good point...

Yeah I wanna see facts..... I could see 15-20%

How when there's less than 5% in computer science based degrees? They can't hire people who don't exist. If you think it should be more, then you need to encourage more of us to study STEMs in college.

I saw this story the day it went live and I was upset.

Like most people I'd love to work at Google. Either way, as a person working in IT, I'm not shocked. As a person actively interviewing for a better position, I'm not shocked.

Now what shocks me is when some fucking moron who is one of those fucking paper experts tries to tell you such and suck field has a lot of diversity and blah blah.

Fuck you. Things have indeed improved a lot thanks to Dr. King and many others but we still got a long fucking way to go.

Im not surprised..their office life and architecture is beautiful---rooms with relaxing hammocks, etc. That kind of progressive luxury they will keep mostly to themselves. Did yall honestly think they were above continuing the system of white supremacy?

lol just read some of the comments on tech sites and you will have your answer

google: sorry all positions are full at security, custodian, mailroom, and cooks please try again in the future

google: we hire blacks who the hell u think cleans out the waste baskets and mops the floors

google: we're not racist we have coupons for urban items on our site

Google in Ann arbor hiring niggaz left n right. I know 3 people starting there in the next couple of weeks

Let ask this: should we be upset that we are underrepresented in a different industries? Shouldn't our focus be maximizing our potential, median income any legal means necessary?

I'm in tears...I can hear a Bobby Jindal saying this on my phone.

I watched that movie with Vince Vaughn the internship and knew this!

It's supposed to be correct? I think the only thing you have to do is watch Scripps Howards National Spelling Bee to see the future Google employees.

Fucking dotheads are taking over!!!! And we're sitting back beating each other up. Google stats say 30% of their employees are Asian. I'd like to know how many of that number are dotheads!!!

It's not just that blacks aren't in the right courses or have the right degrees. There's racism. It still exists. I know this personally from the tech industry.

The IT industry as a whole is very "Google-like" if you know what I mean.

This right here is the truth. I have MS in software engineering. I have tons of experience. You cannot tell by legal name if I'm white or black because it is so fucking common. If I update my resume on dice.com, careerbuilder.com and monster.com tomorrow, by Wednesday I will get at least 50 calls. Seriously, literally 50 calls. Some of the calls be for major companies. But, once they realize I'm black their tone in their voice completely change. They start asking questions not to include me but to exclude me. They see what is on my resume and the technologies I have experience in but start asking shit that they know I have not done. I say to them I have years in the field and picking up new languages or technologies is very simple for me because that is the nature of the profession. Things are constantly changing. To them IT is a white/east indian/asian boys game. I have even had the chair of the computer science department when I was in undergrad state that black cannot program computers. So the 2% at Google or any other IT company does not surprise me one bit.

I think it has to do with what certain groups focus on. I see this stupid campaign that Major League Baseball is trying to bring more black Americans into baseball.:smh: Indians/Asians realize their strength is centered around Science and Medicine, not scoring touchdowns and dunking basketballs. Like Google, any company would like to hire the best of the best. It has to start at an early age, and get involved in disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs.

What would you recommend for a brother trying to enter IT and needs experience?

This^^^ I graduated from with a Comp Sci degree. When I started there were like 10 blacks in the program, when I finished, it was 2 out of like 50 or so. And I tell ya, I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, I was just too dumb to change and eventually got my shit. The other brothers and sisters that were in the program are doing well though, I still keep in touch with them. Brothers be trying to find the easy way out a lot of times, thats why we see a lot of folks in teaching gigs, social work, criminal justice, and the like. Those gigs are shit pay and I wasn't going out like that. Put in my bid and pulling 6 figures. Technology pays, but its hard work, you got to keep refreshing your skills. Most times in technology, they don't care what color you are, you get your certs, get some experience, present yourself well and you will get the job. But you got to have all 3. You can't come up in there with experience and a cert and tripping over your lips and can't pronounce words and shit. "The thang, you know what umm saying?"

Realest post written in this thread. To me, the problem is the dearth of blacks that get computer science and advanced math degrees.

There is another fact everyone here is missing. Google also has horrible hiring practices for non tech roles as well. That mean for things like legal, marketing, finance, research they are still 90% white and Asian. Don't fall for the smokescreen of google talking about CS degrees. There's a bunch of other jobs there. I work with Google regularly when it comes advertising and sales and trust me no one in their marketing department has a CS degree.

Man I got stories for days about how Google and companies like that will only hire white or Asian people.

Google on Wednesday released statistics on the makeup of its work force, providing numbers that offer a stark glance at how Silicon Valley remains a white man’s world.

Thirty percent of Google’s 46,170 employees worldwide are women, the company said, and 17 percent of its technical employees are women. Comparatively, 47 percent of the total work force in the United States is women and 20 percent of software developers are women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Of its United States employees, 61 percent are white, 2 percent are black and 3 percent are Hispanic. About one-third are Asian — well above the national average — and 4 percent are of two or more races. Of Google’s technical staff, 60 percent are white, 1 percent are black, 2 percent are Hispanic, 34 percent are Asian and 3 percent are of two or more races.

In the United States work force over all, 80 percent of employees are white, 12 percent are black and 5 percent are Asian, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Google’s disclosures come amid an escalating debate over the lack of diversity in the tech industry. Although tech is a key driver of the economy and makes products that many Americans use ever yday, it does not come close to reflecting the demographics of the country — in terms of sex, age or race. The lopsided numbers persist among engineers, founders and boards of directors.

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., the civil rights activist, has been pressuring tech companies to release data on the makeup of their workforces. When he appeared at Google’s shareholders meeting this month, David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer, surprised people when he said the company would release the data. Other tech companies at which Mr. Jackson has appeared, including Hewlett-Packard and Facebook, have not released diversity statistics about their companies.

“Google is not where we want to be when it comes to diversity, and it’s hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s senior vice president for people operations, wrote in a blog post.

Though Google did not specifically say how it planned to change the numbers, it said that it hoped releasing them would start a dialogue. The company had made changes in the past to recruit and retain women, like lengthening maternity leaves and including women on the teams that interviewed prospective employees, but the numbers reveal it has a long way to go.

Tech companies have often blamed the lack of diverse workforces on the pipeline — they can only hire the people who apply for jobs, and those tend to be white and Asian men, they say.

That is partly true. For instance, only 18.5 percent of high school students who took the Advanced Placement exam in computer science last year were girls. In eight states, no Hispanic students took the test and in 12 states, no black students took it. The problems start as early as childhood, when girls are discouraged by parents and teachers from pursuing technical pursuits.

Yet some of the blame also falls on tech companies. There can be a sexist culture that turns away women, as evidenced by the high attrition rate among technical women as compared to men. And women who try to start tech companies face exclusion by a venture capital network dominated by a chummy fraternity of men.

This is all despite the fact that the data — which in Silicon Valley usually reigns supreme — shows that diversity on groups benefits research, development, innovation and profit.

I feel you on this.

What would you recommend for a brother trying to enter IT and needs experience?

Depends what you want to do. But I would suggest learn PHP or any others scripting language for the web. CSS3 and HTML5. Build small websites with databases using MYSQL. That way it shows you can learn new technologies as well you have something to present. A lot of times recruiters/companies will ask to see what you have done. Also, learn all the buzz words of the field for interviews especially phone interviews. Also, learning how to develop for mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. The hot thing right now is responsive design. Find some tutorials and build some sites using responsive design.
