NBA approves Ballmer's bid to buy Clippers

What most of yall have missed in this sale is that Ballmer agreed to let Sterling's wife still work with the team in some capacity..

It's a bit more like this..

A With the sale - the tree gets cut down to a stump
B With the hearing - the tree gets excavated and roots dug up

Please post supporting evidence.
The NBA has been very clear that all the Sterlings are out.

Paying an extra Billion plus is not like paying another half a million for a house or another 10 million for a building. Overpaying is acceptable by rich folks up to a point.

Sterling wanted a certain amount of money to be quiet and he was concerned about capital gains tax. The extra money is hush money.

did sterling personally tell you this?

1. Long term lease with Staples.
2. City is really buying into the team after this major upheaval.
3. It's L.A.
4. He doesn't even work in Seattle anymore.
5. It's L.A.
6. Do you remember his tenure at Microsoft? They are trying to right the ship and catch up with all the internet & phone operators.

When exactly is he making that move? What year?

Leases get broken all the time
That's great
So?
He lives there though and tried to buy the kings and said he would personally put up the money for an arena
So?
Yeah. What does that have to do with him possibly wanting to move the team to Seattle.

I'm not guessing about when? I'm speculating that he's thinking about it. It won't be the first time an owner pronounced one thing and did another (like with Seattle moving to Oklahoma city).

This is what I said yesterday.

I feel like we've been had.

You think Silver or any of those owners - JORDAN INCLUDED - care about what dude said?

Hell no they didn't.

We get the moral victory AGAIN, and the CAC walks away with the money. :smh:

What were your expectations for how this was going to go down?

Same here. In the end, nothing really changed. Would you be absolutely shocked if Ballmer has said similar shit behind closed doors?

and with the prices going so high now, pretty much black investors are going to be priced out of the market (not that it wasn't already difficult)

Apartment leases maybe, stadium leases not nearly as often. Pretty rarely actually. This one runs through 2024.

While the Kings deal was quite recent, he's not as tied to Seattle as he was then. He's not the CEO he's out of the mix. He can kick back with an L.A. team not not look back.

This is what I expected...

...hindsight just makes me feel differently about it.

I actually though Ellison and Oprah had a chance. Not that I'm a fan of Ellison but at least Oprah was putting black person in the mix. Ellison is worth twice as much as Ballmer... he just didn't want it THAT badly. Ellison gets outbid every time. He lost out on the kings over an extra 20 million. He doesn't want a team as badly as he claims.

 team goes to TI and Rick Ross. (Boss)

Only a select few have money like that to spend. It is a win because it shows talking smack about blk people is not tolerated and could cost you a team. fuck what Cuban thinks. Lebron wanted him out and the players did and Silver abided. Gives some power to players and fans.

I don't know ballmer personally, but I don't think he could be AS racist as an old Jew from NY. He's definitely smart enough not to say it. He can have all the crazy thoughts in his head. I don't want to hear shit.
What were your expectations for how this was going to go down?

did sterling personally tell you this?

It's called common sense. Aside from your vast experience with the spending habits of the ULTRA wealthy this does not pass the scientific smell test. Oprah expressed interest, as well as other minority groups. This is waaaaay to clean and easy... and for an entire 1.2 billion more than the value.

But of course you could be right... makes perfect sense.

The NBA essentially gave up that effort by cancelling the June 3 meeting to vote the Sterlings out..

Under the agreement signed Thursday, Ballmer will own 100 percent of the team. Shelly Sterling requested as part of the sale that she continue to have an association with the team, and Ballmer was able to satisfy those terms, sources said.

Though according to the deal’s terms Ballmer will own 100 percent of the team, Shelly Sterling may continue to be involved under conditions worked out privately with Ballmer, the individual said.

OK.

All I was expecting was that one billionaire owner was going to be replaced by another. I didn't attach much more meaning to the outcome than that.

The process on the other hand was what was important to me. A billionaire got caught talking way out of pocket about Black people. He got checked on it swiftly. That needs to continue to happen. In this case the fool wound up still cashing out lovely but that won't always be the case.

Well, at no point was I ever under the delusion that Sterling was an anomaly amongst owners.

However, I think I allowed myself to get to become too idealistic about the push to get rid of dude.

It looked like 'progress', but that was my idealism blinding me.

This is the same ol' game being ran, damn near the same ol' way.

Same here. In the end, nothing really changed. Would you be absolutely shocked if Ballmer has said similar shit behind closed doors?

that's not common sense at all. Common sense will tell you that Sterling does not care about money at this point in life because a) he said so b) he still wants to keep the team. He doesn't give a fuck about hush money

Yeah. I read up on the extension after you mentioned it.

I'm not saying it's likely to happen. I'm just talking about it being a possibility, however how remote.

Stadium leases are broken. The real issue is the massive relocation fee that most owners just won't want to pay. I'm not sure what kind of lease Sterling signed and how that grandfathers over to the new owner.

So in your scenario Ballmer owns the team outright and Shelly gets to come to the locker room once a month to sniff old jockstraps?

She's out but she's got a key to the landryroom.
Big deal.

The team would be bound to that lease through 2024.

Yea, he got check alright. A check for 2 billion. Peep the numbers and tell me if this shit is way out of pocket as well:

For me it's about the process.
For every time someone gets called out for racist activity & statements they wont have a golden parachute like this waiting for them. People will also be made to suffer for racist statements and activity - that is what I take away from this.
The idea that we should immediately expect action due to someone's racist activity & statements is long overdue.

Has to be.......in the last 4 years 5 teams have been sold and none were sold for even close to that much. If Steve Balmer wanted to be part of the NBA that bad he could have bid 800 mill on the bucks and won.

But who the fuck wants to buy that shit? It's location. LA, NY, Houston, Chicago and other destinations make the deal happen. If this was the Grizzles, Ballmer is not buying that shit.

Right. Of course. And Sterling also said he's not a racist, so naturally I think he's full of shit. And if Sterling doesn't care about money then why the mention about capital gains tax that would eat into profits of a forced sale? *** bc he cares about money*** Sure he'd rather keep the team, it raised his profile and he's already a billionaire but that ship sailed.

The other billionaire- the one who paid by 1.25 billion over valuation- could've purchased an NFL Franchise, an NBA franchise, and a Hockey franchise for that amount of money.

Oh I forgot to mention. With the sale of he Clippers the NBA meeting schedule for 4 days from now has been canceled. Nice and neat.

Conspiracy?
How about Sterling just put his foot in his mouth at the wrong time and the League was all too happy to finally have an excuse to get rid of him?

some people have a hard time believing that shit happens and people do things to deal with it. They seem to think that EVERYTHING is perfectly ordered by some genius white men somewhere. The definition of a conspiracy theorist.

you could be right but sterling has done worse shit in the past and the nba didnt give one fuck

it just seems weird how everything is unfolding

and usually when that happens, its some bullshit going on

He did that in the days before twitter, facebook and TMZ. If this was around back when his wife was posing as the health inspector, he'd have been gone.

I feel ya but that's actually BETTER than real life numbers of who has power and influence in business. If you think of head coaches like high end managers, the league is doing better than the rest of America. and no way 2% of the business have black CEOs.

I just checked the numbers

Among Fortune 500 CEOs, six are black, making up just 1.2 percent
There are eight Latino and eight Asian CEOs, accounting for just 1.6 percent each

Just saying you should look at society and not just the NBA.

Look this may be reaching but what precludes Ballmer from giving her or the son-in-law a position of power in the Clippers organization?

Don't think it'll happen but it's possible with this sale

But they were saying how bad he just wants to own a team, he could brought Milwaukee if he was desperate .....he could have brought the pistons if he was desperate

The League. The league makes it's own rules since it's basically a private club. You want in? Abide by it's terms.

Silver has been clear since this started that they all go. No ownership stakes no involvement. Ballmer may be able to get her some tix for a Sixers game, but that's about it.

The owner of the Bucks wouldn't speak with anyone he thought wouldn't keep the team in that city. Maybe the Pistons owner was still pissed about Vista and hung up on him every time he called? Under normal circumstances, owners pick who they want it isn't always just the highest bid.

He offered 650 million for the bucks. They sold for 550.

didnt know this but why not make them an offer they couldn't refuse like the clippers?
