Juror Betsy Vennemann said after the verdict, “We wanted to make a statement that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Capt. David Wilson won $7,500 in compensatory damages and $10,000 in punitive damages. Jurors, including a nun, said they went easy on the defendant, Officer Todd Greeves, because he has a family and they weren’t sure who would pay the bill.

Wilson testified that the Robertson Fire Protection District truck was parked in a way to protect rescuers working to free a victim from wreckage along Interstate 270 at McDonnell Boulevard.

Greeves ordered that the truck be moved to accommodate passing traffic and arrested Wilson for ignoring him. Wilson was released after 23 minutes and never charged. He sued, claiming civil rights violations that opened him to anxiety and humiliation.

Greeves told the court the truck was creating a hazard and not adding to safety at the scene.

Jurors interviewed after the verdict said their feeling about Greeves was reinforced during the punitive phase of the trial, when they heard there had been other complaints about him. An internal affairs investigation determined that Greeves used excessive force in a 2002 arrest, court documents show, and was the subject of several other complaints.

Before Wednesday’s deliberations, U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Ann Medler had already ruled that Greeves had no probable cause to arrest Wilson, who she said had state law on his side. She also dismissed the city of Hazelwood as a defendant.

“The whole police and fire communities have been watching this case,” said Bevis Schock, one of Wilson’s lawyers. “Everybody wanted to know who controls the fire scene.”

Greeves’ lawyer, Peter Dunne, said he was disappointed in the verdict and the discussion of the other complaints against Greeves. Dunne also said it was unfair to suggest that Greeves did not care about the firefighters’ safety.

Dunne said that the city’s insurance would not pay for the costs and that the issue is “complicated.” Schock said he thinks the insurance probably would pay the compensatory damages, and possibly the punitive. Also at issue is payment of unspecified lawyers’ fees.

I didnt know that jurors could hear about other civil complaints that have been filed against a police officer! Very interesting!

Good... Fucking pig is nothing but an adult bully with a badge. He got what he deserved. I hope insurance doesn't pick up his costs and he and his family has to sweat it out for years while trying to pay that bill.

True that, but you know that many times fire and emergency vehicles do block the whole road when they only need a lane, huh?

Seldom,if ever....perhaps initially when setting up,but they are not there to impede, only to do a job safely.

They do it because there's always one anxious blind idiot and the slew of people who can't help but slow down to look.

When was the last time you changed a tire on the side of a roadway? Im/we put out lives on the line cutting people out of wrecks and that truck, with the rear chevron design (since 2008, NFPA standard) is the only thing keeping us from getting run over.

Come walk in these shoes if you dare.:angry:

I've been a Firefighter for well over a decade in a very busy department.I'm actually at the rank that drives and operates the Fire Engine. I've heard about this case for months but this is the first time I've seen it. Looking at the video, that was poor placement of the Engine. It didn't look to be blocking the scene at all and the actual scene looked to be on the shoulder. The Cop was actually right about repositioning the Engine. Even though we have our responsibilities to provide care, the Highway Patrol has the responsibility to keep the roads clear. It looks to me like the Firefighters were being assholes for no reason. Not to mention not wearing safety gear on the freeway and jumping off a moving Fire Engine. All deserve blame for how they handled this.

Difference is it was the Captain and not a driver like you. He controls the scene. It's the law.

The Captain's #1 responsibility is safety. In that video, he wasn't even addressing his responsibility. He had on no safety gear, the apparatus was in a poor position, and he was with the patient with no regard for traffic. In this case, simply repositioning the rig would have please everyone.Looking at that video, what purpose can you give for him to simply not comply?

I worked 20 years in the big city, and part of the time I was stationed in a house right off the expressway....so we went to many scenes like this and worse.

My take is there was some ego involved in both parties...

The more protection the better,but...the cop car was blocking one lane and protecting the scene. So the truck could have been pulled up...

On the other hand,it was not rush hour with bumper to bumper traffic....the two lanes were still flying.

And if you have ever been on the high-way,shit seems a lot faster and more scary when you are not in a car.

As for the Cap not wearing gear, who does for medical emergencies?....and what firefighter does not like a 'working' captain.

Move the engine and make the rookie *and* the cop throw some cones out.
Even if he didn't move people expect shit like this to happen on certain roads, they'll be fine.
Both parties had their ass on their shoulders but hopefully the patient made, yeah patient, remember them?

I admittedly didnt watch the video. I did after reading the comments that came after my first response. Captain is wrong for blocking the second lane of traffic. Cop did block the lane creating that buffer to keep your ass outta traffic.
