'X-Men' director Bryan Singer accused of drugging, raping teenage boy
"X-Men" and "The Usual Suspects" director Bryan Singer is accused of drugging and raping a 17-year-old boy in 1999 as part of a "sordid sex ring" maintained by powerful men in Hollywood, according to a lawsuit filed by the alleged victim and obtained by TheWrap.com.
Michael Egan claims Singer, who grew up in West Windsor and is openly gay, had "manipulated his power, wealth, and position in the entertainment industry to sexually abuse and exploit the underage Plaintiff through the use of drugs, alcohol, threats, and inducements which resulted in Plaintiff suffering catastrophic psychological and emotional injuries." He is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.
Singer's lawyer, Marty Singer, tells Variety that the claims are “absurd and defamatory.” (Marty Singer represented John Travolta against three men who claimed the actor sexually assaulted them; those lawsuits were eventually dropped.)
Egan, then a model and aspiring actor, claims he met the director in 1998, a year before Singer went into production on the first "X-Men" movie, at a party at an estate where the director told him the men there could make or break his Hollywood career. Though Egan said he was straight, he was forced to drink and take drugs, and was "surreptitiously administered drugs" in his drink, according to the lawsuit.
Egan says Marc Collins-Rector, the former chairman of Digital Entertainment Network, an early Internet start-up, sexually abused him and arranged for Singer to do the same. Singer also allegedly promised acting gigs to Egan if he agreed to sex.
Collins-Rector pled guilty in Trenton in 2004 to luring five minors across state lines to have sex with them. Egan's lawyer Jeff Herman, who previously represented the men who accused "Sesame Street" puppeteer Kevin Clash of sexual abuse, says he plans to file more lawsuits against Singer and others at the parties. Singer's next film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past," comes out next month.
